Reality is a different country

1769

I was asked a cracking question last night: ‘Everyone knows Rangers went into administration on 14 February 2012, but do you know what date they came out of administration?’

Can anyone guess? This is the material Cognitive Dissonance is made of.

Duff and Phelps did an incredible job. Had they stuck to Whyte’s plan, put a fait accompli to the SPL, with a matter of days to decide, ‘Our Hero’ would still own the ground, the club and would still be exalted by those who initially crowned him ‘Our Hero’, before the term became a weapon of irony.

We got a further glimpse into the goings-on at Cardiff before popular and successful manager, Malky Mackay, was sacked.  Chief exec, Simon Lim, while commenting on the £30m loss the club made last season, as a Championship club, spoke of the signing of 20-year-old striker Andreas Cornelius for £7.5m, from Copenhagen, with a £45k per week, 5 year contract, somewhat more than the £6k he was previously coping with in Denmark.

Earlier this month Malky said, “What I said at the time still stands. £7.5m was our record transfer at the time but a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward in the Premier League costs two or three times that and every team in the Premier League are striving for someone like that.”

There you have it, £7.5m is not enough to buy a hit-the-ground-running centre-forward, you’ll need two or three times that! In England, reality really is a different country (this is not me getting involved in the referendum debate, before the nationalists start trolling me again).

English football is broken in ways it is increasingly difficult to fathom. Only the persistent annual losses and ballooning debt figures offer a glimpse into what the future may hold.

Our namesakes, Belfast Celtic, withdrew from league football shortly after their players were attacked by a mob following the final whistle at game against Linfield on Boxing Day 1948. Star man, Jimmy Jones, died yesterday. The then 20-year-old was thrown over a wall and out of the stadium, breaking his leg in the process.

That was the end for Belfast Celtic but Jimmy recovered and is the Irish League’s all-time top goalscorer.

A general question but would anyone have been less annoyed if we had gone out the cup to Aberdeen with the following in the line up.

    Watt

    Herron

    McGeouch

    Fisher

    Atajic

Surely if these Bhoys were getting experience it would have been understandable rather than what we went with.

I think I would have been less critical if we had tried some youth in the match.

Scrolled back a bit, didn’t see Kev J’s original post but saw a few rebukes. If Kev J really said that Martin O’Neill feigned his wife’s illness to work his ticket out of Celtic, then it must go down as one of the most disgraceful posts ever. There has to be standards and if he is allowed to say something like that and get away with it, it denigrates the entire blog. Rant over re Kev J.

My purpose of popping in was a bhoy and his wife from Clonmel where I’m posting from are heading over to Edinburgh next week-end and would dearly love to take in the Tynecastle game. Anyone know when tickets for this game will be available, how difficult is it likely to be to land a couple of tickets in the Celtic end.

  4. Happy Administration Day to all !

    Fixed Odds time.

Last week I did not tempt fate by giving stats on Celts abysmal home record in

The cup v Aberdeen. A few posters noted this just after the draw was made and expressed some scepticism.

This week, cup ties in England.

    Soccerbase stats for Sat

Blackpool have no wins in 10 visits to Ipswich

Killie have one win in 18 visits to Tannadice.

Forfar have a good home record to Dunfermline, losing 1 in 9.

Peterhead have lost 1 in 8 at home to Clyde

These are just stats. Keeps me occupied and find it interesting.

Last week, Liverpool had not beaten the Gunners in last 13……and then handed out a grubbing ! Might have a few singles this week and a small accum.

Probably. But then there would have been howls of “Why did he play young players? This was not a game to experiment in. It’s cost us the Scottish Cup.”………

  6. LiviBhoy

I think the Scottish Cup is worth winning and would have wanted the strongest possible team. Watt would have been in it. Though, I do think his loan this year will be good for him.

In my eyes, Neil got it wrong on the day and we were narrowly beaten by the best of the rest in Scotland. It’s disappointing sure but If Neil had a time-machine I think he probably would have just put Charlie or Biton in there

Experimenting in the Scottish cup is a no no for me. Likewise playing tried and trusted who can no longer be trusted.

Play the young guns in the league cup is where to start. And let the fans know the intentions in advance.

As it is…the, apparently ‘died’ huns will be back in the same league as us, shortly having dodged away from the £140 million !!!

Ach they’ll always know deep down they are just supporting a mongrel protestant ’cause’ club now, and the real deal sunk along with their credibility a couple of years ago. Thats why they are the baddies. Along with sectarianism, anti football, fat ugly fans, etc.

I’ve read what Celtic had to say about the Tynecastle game but I can’t remember Celtic ever speaking out about the chants of opposing teams… ever. That’s why I’d like to find the statement, for me it would be a first.

The split between +ve and -ve would have been the same. There would have been plenty moaning about playing kids in an important cup game, stating it should be getting done on League Cup or the league, which we’ve already as good as won.

I touched on this the other day, it seems very rare for any team to comment on the opposition fans, leaving them to deal with nay problems themselves. I guess it avoids any tit-for-tat exchanges and as an informal policy probably makes sense.

Celtic end at Tynecastle sold out I believe. Best bet to ask around the forums/twitter for spares.

Be very careful if they take tickets in the home end. They’re not called mini-huns for nothing. Many of their fans are full blown huns.

  17. Weeminger,

    I rarely happens anymore.

Ever since clubs agreed on damage done by visiting fans you don’t hear much on that either.

But I know you knew that ;)

  18. @Stein

Well that makes sense. Charlie is so consistent he has to play for us every week. I suppose Neil might have just thought it was a risk playing both Biton and Johansen in the same midfield considering they are both relatively new. I would have went for it though.

  19. weeminger:

I’ve never known Celtic to make statement regards the chants of an opposing team, ever. That’s not to say they have not done it, and I’ve missed it. The Famine Song echoed for long enough without comment. That’s why I was so surprised to read John O’Neil say that Celtic did make a statement. Well I’ve been searching for it and I can’t find anything. Hopefully when John O’Neil comes back on he’ll point me to his posts highlighting it because if it’s out there, I’d love a copy.

  20. Hi Paul.

they went into administration 2 years ago today, following accounting procedures(yeh i know,i know) there was a CVA compiled which failed. The admin process ended and the fantasy began.

    14th June 2012.

it happened,no amount of fear, intimidation or hillocks of tooth enamel will change that.

As a youngster i vaguely remember going to see The European Cup coming to Parkhead.

from that moment, and on advice from senior tims I knew that Celtic stood alone.

I would never compare Celtic against the cheat,I would only compare us to the standards set by our club.no one else.

I stand by you Celtic.these are tough times

Jimmy Jones credits Sean McCann the Ballymena goalkeeper, who was a fan at the game, and who was the only one who came to his aid, as having saved his life that dad. Sean McCann ran to help and covered Jimmy Jones’s body with his own. The RUC were still trying to find their hats which they’d thrown in the air when Billy Simpson scored for Linfield.

Sean McCann deserves a minutes applause too.

I’m sure Charlo would have started as he usually plays well against Aberdeen.

We had so many poor individual performances on the day, so it may not have made any difference.

The irrepressible Sidney McKechnie Gallagher, Thomas ‘Tottsie’ Pollock ( RIP) & Colin ‘Collie’ Beattie ( now bizarrely resident with the nuns at St. Margaret’s Hospice) conjure up some fantastic memories of bygone days.

Tottsie & Collie had a few altercations over the years which they settled with the time-honoured & now redundant ‘skwerr go’… No blades or any other ungentlemanly tools involved. Just ME and YOU stuff.

Mention of the Barnes, Burns and Mowbray style of football reminded me of a European performance against Hamburg. We were humped in both legs. Lucky us. Well it was Hamburg afterall. Abysmal coaching and defending. Setting Free The Bears is correct to ascertain that we were useless in Europe for decades. These are generally better times. It seems to have been forgotten by those who see only misery now and in future at Celtic Park.

    —–

The Saturday fixture prior to the Hamburg home game was against Hibs which we won 5-0 or so, everyone including the media were making Celtic favourites. The Hamburg manager just noted that there were a few things we saw that they would work on.

well in that Hibs game , we regularly had both full backs up the pitch at the same time, the full backs never tugged into to cover the centre halve and at one point in the first half , we had that many players up the pitch that we had a 1-3 break , young Harper of Hibs managed to fall over the ball with the shock of having so much space.

Yes, we have indeed advanced immeasurably since those days where our naivety in trying to mimic the way the Lisbon Lions would have played (if you rolled the years forward) only works if you have players of that calibre.

Despite the odd grumble about selection and tactics , I am sure that Neil and his management team can cope with the decades out of date advice , that you often have to wade through.
