‘Really robust offer’ euphemism

416

“Really robust offer” is apparently a euphemism for “Can’t believe they would pay that much”, following the transfer of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen.  The player is still only 20, with several development years ahead, but I doubt any of us set his valuation in this bracket.

At times this season I referred to Jeremie as our MVP (after his demolition of Hibs in September) and lamented the lack of end product comparable to Kristofer Ajer, when the adaptable central defender plays right back.

The failure to get crosses into the box by full backs on both wings, at the level Kris can apparently achieve, has been one of Celtic’s critical failures this season.  Come what may in the summer, we would have attempted to recruit an improvement, with or without Jeremie, who remains more potential than actual.

There is a major rebuilding job ahead, but with only the Scottish Cup a practical target this season, Neil Lennon is unlikely to see much of the reported £11.5m (before Man City’s cut) this week.

Good luck to you, Jeremie.

Loved the way we whipped the ball around last night.

We have to hope that DD other business concerns are not run as blindly as he does Celtic. That said, Lawwell has been in the post too long, his only incentive has been his dividend and bonus, often at expense of success on the field.

We need someone hungry, ambitious and with new ideas to take us in to the next decade and based on the performance of Lawwell, who, minus a strong Rangers this pass decade and a free run at CL, where he’s failed miserably, it should not be hard to see improvements in whoever takes the role.

    Excellent idea.

Last comment in reply to Big Wavy – I think the likes of Ryan Christie (James Forrest, Calmac, Broonie, Big Shane etc etc etc) will have been hurt by the stuff some say – even on here. We all have our favourites, and we all have opinions on players strengths and weaknesses – the joy of football debate. It should never become personal or abusive. Even wee Jink had his critics. But my attitude is support them when they wear a Celtic shirt and wish them well when they leave.

In wee Jeremie we recouped the fee’s for at least two ‘other signings’ with their skelfs from the bench last night, its a game of roulette.

But its high time for somebody else to spin the wheel CSC

  4. One thing is for sure; supporters chasing and hurling abuse at the team bus has done nothing for player retention.

  5. There is an apocryphal tale of a sculptor being asked how he managed to create a beautiful statue from a block of marble.

“I just chip off all the pieces, that don’t look like a person”.

The transfer of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen is like passing a piece of marble to a sculptor.

When (and if ) the art work is completed by Leverkusen (and it’s value sores) there is no point asking why we didn’t keep the marble and do the work ourselves.

Our coaching team expect the marble to carve itself into a statue.

    Good luck Jeremie.

  6. Frimpong has pace to burn, a wee bit of trickery as well, was never a full back & his final ball was frustrating.

With proper coaching and playing with a team that suits his style he could be very successful, I hope he is but either way, he is a young Dutch kid getting kicked around Scotland by journeymen Pros.

Celtic was his stepping stone, he was never going to stay around.

He did well for us last year, not great this year but then that is true of almost the entire squad, we made handy money which is badly needed so good luck to the kid.

  7. Let’s be honest, Bayern are taking a punt here. Not every £11m player goes onto be a superstar.

I suspect he will, though we need to be honest about what we’ve lost.

Any player who leaves because of that is in the wrong trade.

And would be advised to avoid most major leagues around the world.

  9. Maybe not totally Celtic at this present time but we’ll see. :-

  10. We don’t need Big Weans in the Team or The Support………………

Our enemies are everywhere and we’ve made enough of our own mistakes to be making more of the current ones…..

  11. i wonder how Leverkusen scouted Frimpong. I think Elhamed played in our big Europa games last year and his main perfs were in the SPFL

Based on his poorer perf this season, I suspect his reputation may have come from his U20 Dutch games or contacts in Man City

Still find it strange but Leipzig pay £20 for Burke so the German teams don’t always know best

    Taylor

    Pros:

    Neat and tidy

Builds well with McGregor, Moi, Edouard

    Crossing OK

    Decent defending on wing

    Cons:

Refuses to run onto great passes and space he helped create. Deliberately sets his stance to turn back. Indecisive

    Doesn’t cover back post well

Laxalt covers at the back post better and stops more moves due to his robust tackling. Downside is he gives away too many frees and his crossing has disappeared. I think he was dropped due to the Hibs goal which is unfair

I think Taylor is in the team due to showing well in training; Laxalt will be plotting his summer status i assume

We haven’t replaced Gordon, Tierney, Lustig , Boyata or Sinclair since our peak. In some respect that is understandable but no-one has got anywhere near their standard. maybe if they got a run of games?

  12. The cliche’d strong spine to the team please – stick with Soro and Turnbull, If Eddy’s offski – the goal scorer needs to be replaced, more like for like rather than a punt…..( I know, I know)………. or we’ll be humped next year – our mistakes will not be covered by enough goals.

I can’t believe we are floundering in the ‘keeper dept – unthinkable…………….

  13. Wee Jezza was buzzing after his league cup final win in 2019. The lad’s development like most of our squad has stalled under Neil Lennon. He should have been a player for us for another few years but this is a good move for him under our current stewardship.

I’ve no doubt he’ll go on to play regular champions league football.

    We need Lennon gone ASAP.

  14. looking forward to seeing the wee man here in the bundesliga….he will at least be on a level playing field with regards the men in Schwartz….”oh meine Tage”

on ither news ….or in this case the lack of news I present a follow up from yesterday,s post regarding Graig Murrays sworn testimony.

“a former UK ambassador has published two statements sworn on oath (for which he therefore risks prosecution and imprisonment for perjury if they aren’t true), stating that the former First Minister of Scotland told him the current First Minister of Scotland engaged in a criminal conspiracy to imprison her predecessor on false allegations of attempted rape, and that the Scottish Government had engaged in a criminal contempt of court in an attempt to conceal evidence from a senior Scottish judge.

But apparently in Scotland that isn’t interesting news.”

    ##

Who knows. But good scouts will be able to spot potential. And the best place to find unrealised potential is at an underperforming and dysfunctional club.

The valuation may have been be influenced by Kieran Tierney having more or less doubled in value in under a year just by playing with better players in a better league.

  16. I thought Frimpong played well out in the San Siro, his pace caused Milan all sorts of problems. He raised his profile that night.

  17. Bankiebhoy

Genuinely curious – how would you define a big wean in the support?

I know you tend to be critical of those critical of the club.

If we’ve learned one thing from Tommy Sheridan’s political career it is that for a charge of perjury to stick any falsehoods have to have influenced the outcome of the trial. As the case against Murray is being heard by a judge without a jury I can’t see that happening.

The affidavit I read (I admit I gave up before the end, I was losing the will to live) confirms my opinion that Murray is a walking ragbag of personality disorders.

Having said that, he fits right in among the cult of the SNP and all its faction ridden camp followers.

I have no idea what that post means, I’m afraid

If I were to point out we are 23 points and 27 goals behind sevco, whilst having 3 games in hand, would that indicate I’m a big wean?

  25. Jimbo,

It might do, but that would depend if you were screamin’ an’ stampin’ yer wee feet as you drew attention to those bald facts.

And for the record…I don’t imagine such a well-balanced, good natured, worldly type such as yersel would ever do that sort of thing.

    On the Transfer Front…………

Every window the press have us linked with various names

The endless list of who we are after seems to grow by the minute

But very few come who had not been highlighted

A lot do not – who have been highlighted

I turn my attention to Ben Davis – I do not know if he is good enough or if he is the answer

But I would imagine his current manager Alex Rae will not be talking positively about Celtic

On the other hand i am not confident PL is going above and beyond to get his man

And I hold no hope that NL can be used in a confident selling situation

So I end up not giving a f–k which is a cardinal sin on my part

I just don’t hold any confidence in our ability to attract the right player

The young lad from aberdeen – i bet my house SG spoke to him and sold him with great enthusiasm the future as a Hun

No fuss no long protracted public negotiation – just a straight forward deal (BTW I have no idea if he is any good)

My faith in our Board and Management team to do a proper positive deal is thin

I have simply not recovered from McGinn

Alas, I’m a little too long in tooth to be any kind of wean!

  28. An Dun @ 2.23 is right, Jeremy was outstanding in the San Siro. Perhaps Bayer Leverkusen watched that game. Anyway it’s a good move for him, he’ll be at a club where he actually gets coached.

    Last one on transfers….

Although denied by NL (and I believe him)

I was nervous about the speculation linking Eddy with West Ham for £35m

But i found that if I reorganised the deal into £30m plus Ajeti i felt a great deal better about the Ajeti transfer
