‘Really robust offer’ euphemism

416

“Really robust offer” is apparently a euphemism for “Can’t believe they would pay that much”, following the transfer of Jeremie Frimpong to Bayer Leverkusen.  The player is still only 20, with several development years ahead, but I doubt any of us set his valuation in this bracket.

At times this season I referred to Jeremie as our MVP (after his demolition of Hibs in September) and lamented the lack of end product comparable to Kristofer Ajer, when the adaptable central defender plays right back.

The failure to get crosses into the box by full backs on both wings, at the level Kris can apparently achieve, has been one of Celtic’s critical failures this season.  Come what may in the summer, we would have attempted to recruit an improvement, with or without Jeremie, who remains more potential than actual.

There is a major rebuilding job ahead, but with only the Scottish Cup a practical target this season, Neil Lennon is unlikely to see much of the reported £11.5m (before Man City’s cut) this week.

Good luck to you, Jeremie.

Loved the way we whipped the ball around last night.

As a wee gesture of support ( and because I think Resolution is worthy) , I have signed up with The Celtic Trust this evening. I am guessing the more members, the more influence of a sort.

    =============

Thanks. Numbers will count in terms of immediate clout as opposed to pulling as many shareholders together AND there is no need to be a shareholder to join the CST as every contribution buys in effect the contributor a slice of a share.

The relatively small group pushing Res12 was used as an argument by Celtic for not acting. Now CST have taken on Res11 that number has increased x 4 but I reckon the more folk see how they now operate which can be done at next CST AGM if you are a member then they will not suffer from the derision held by some in the past.

The contributions to the discussions at the Zoom meeting were excellent. The CST AGM will be a most interesting event in Celtic’s history in my opinion of course.

I’m not a member of the trust ( yet) but I’d imagine it gives me more of a voice than I currently have as an individual share holder at a rigged AGM

Indeed, something I have raised in the past. The emphasis is on what a shareholder gets but it needs a bit more bringing out what non shareholders get although there will be a better story to tell as recent policies are put on their web site.

I know the web designer and I’ll suggest to him how some of the improvements might be introduced.

The move from small to big is causing a fair bit of work and more resources are required but addressing that lack of capacity is part of the moving forward agenda.

I thought you were referring to Celtic and the support which is what I meant in my analogy, not the CST.

If anyone has a reason to be pissed off by folk I trusted its me, but there is always a greater good to be considered.

The CST just by growing in size will be a lot different from the smaller group. The Zoom meeting was evidence of that, a chance to express a viewpoint, to be listened to and if widely enough held become policy then action.

I would love it if folk took the red pill and saw the OF as the Green and Blue pill that I see.

  12. Emails relating to Celtic’s controversial trip to Dubai have revealed how the club was told in November the visit was permitted.

In one, a Scottish government official was “pleased to say” the proposed training trip complied with Covid travel rules governing elite sport.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon later criticised the club for going ahead with the trip in early January.

At the time a more infectious strain of the virus was spreading in the UK.

The training camp led to a total of 16 players and coaching staff having to self-isolate because of a positive Covid-19 test.

    Celtic manager rails against government

Peter Lawwell apologises to fans & says Dubai trip ‘clearly a mistake’

Neil Lennon’s government agenda claim is ‘appalling’

The email chain obtained by BBC Scotland, following a Freedom of Information request, shows how the SFA passed on a request from Celtic seeking elite athlete exemption for a possible winter training trip to Turkey.

On 12 November, a government official whose name was redacted wrote: “I am pleased to say this is covered.

“Domestic and elite sportspersons can attend elite training overseas in a non-exempt country, and be exempt on return to Scotland.

“This is on the basis that you will be continuing activities as an elite sportsperson operating under the relevant resumption of performance sport guidelines on return to Scotland.

“All will need written evidence from the governing body confirming that they are an elite sportsperson.”

    First Minister Nicola Sturgeon

    IMAGE COPYRIGHTGETTY IMAGES

image captionFirst Minister Nicola Sturgeon criticised the trip

The destination was later switched to Dubai after Turkey was placed on the quarantine list.

The initial request from Celtic promised “suitably robust control measures, comparable to those applied when we compete in European competition matches” during the warm weather training camp which was designed to “set the team up” for fixtures later in the season.

It assured the government that “bio-protected bubble protocols” would be observed, namely private club charter flights, private transfers, restricted areas within hotels – and a choice of hotel with on-site training facilities.

Celtic flew out to Dubai just days before Scotland’s coronavirus restrictions were tightened and a “stay at home” message was issued following an upsurge in confirmed infections.

    Reflect seriously’

While they were abroad photos emerged on social media showing manager Neil Lennon and other players on sun loungers beside a pool, apparently failing to observe social distancing guidelines.

Another picture apparently showed some players gathered around a table in a hotel bar.

At her daily on briefing on 11 January, a few days after Celtic’s return, the first minister said: “I really hope Celtic reflect seriously on this.

“You should be asking yourself whether going to a training camp, and what you do at that training camp, is necessary.”

The criticism of the trip led to an explosive media conference where the Celtic manager, Neil Lennon, said the fallout was politically-motivated and that there was an agenda against the club.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney later referred to Lennon’s defence of the trip as “appalling”.

Meanwhile…The Huns just continue to do what Huns do…In all my years, I have seen many Hun players who are just thugs…but without doubt Morelos must be the worst ever .

I see some Hun fans defending Morelos and his ” Accidental stamp” on the Hibs player….looking at the video several times, it is obvious that Morelos is a ” Clear and Present” Danger to any opponent. He DELIBERATELY ADDS ” FORCE” to his Stamp a milli second before contact.

He WILL seriously injure someone at some point.

For those Hun fans defending him……How would they view ANY Celtic player who showed that level of Thuggery and Cheating almost every week ?

Also, funny how Gerrard claimed that he ” Didnt see it” ?

  26. Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has announced he will retire at the end of the season.

The 61-year-old will step down after 17 years in the role.

He’s set to be replaced by SRU chief Dominic McKay.

Lawwell said: “It has been an enormous privilege to have served the club and our supporters for more than 17 years – a wonderful honour to have been part of an institution I have loved and supported all my life.

“I will always be very proud of what we have achieved together and it has been a particular privilege to be involved throughout a period in the club’s history which has brought immense domestic success – as well as so many great European nights at Celtic Park.

“Everything we have aimed for and achieved has been for everyone associated with the club. I have greatly valued my involvement with Celtic supporters in Scotland and around the world. In particular, I have appreciated the advice and support offered by all our main supporters groups across Scotland, Ireland and beyond. I would like to thank them all for the passion, support and commitment they continue to bring to Celtic.

“Celtic’s reputation is built on three pillars – success on the field of play, sound business management, and a real and sincere charitable ethos, building on the club’s founding traditions. My objective has always been to maintain and strengthen all three in order to ensure that the club is both successful in the short-term and in the long-term, and is handed down to future generations in the best possible condition. In every aspect of our affairs, we have strived to maintain the highest of standards.

“I first discussed the possibility of my retirement with the chairman last year and we were keen to ensure an orderly handover to a new CEO once we had found the right candidate. Now that the process to select Dominic McKay as my successor is complete, I feel the time is now right to announce my retirement at the end of this season. I believe the Club have identified an excellent successor with the highest integrity who will bring substantial experience and enthusiasm to the role. I wish him every success in the future.

“Dominic will inherit a first-class executive team and a superb group of colleagues. I am grateful to them all for the backing I have received during the past 17 years. I have also owed a great deal to the unstinting guidance and support from Dermot Desmond, someone who has been so fundamental to our success on and off the field. In addition, I thank our present chairman Ian Bankier, previous chairmen and board members I have worked with, as well as Neil Lennon and the other five football managers and their backroom teams and, of course, so many great players at Celtic Park across the years who have given me and our supporters so much pleasure through a sustained period of success. I know that they will provide the same unwavering support and help to Dominic as they help to build on our past success.

“It was obvious that the club would be facing a natural period of transition at the end of this season regardless of any outcomes. Like every Celtic supporter, I am disappointed that, so far, this season has not worked out in the way we all hoped for, despite our best efforts. My goal will be to work with Dominic in order to make changes as smoothly as possible and maintain a focus on continued success on the field of play. Together, our main priority will now be to ensure a seamless transition.

“It has been a difficult year for everyone in so many ways and I just wanted to take this opportunity once again to wish our supporters well. Even in a period of such adversity, upheaval and uncertainty, which our fans have faced in their own lives and communities, so many supporters have been with us again in such huge numbers. I sincerely thank all those supporters who have stayed with us.

“Celtic will always be the biggest and the best club in Scotland and our supporters will always be everything to our success. We need our fans with us to achieve that success.

“While retiring from Celtic in the summer, I will now look forward to other challenges. Inevitably, the role I have occupied also creates pressures and demands which are not always confined to me alone. So, above all, I thank my wife and family for their support and encouragement at all times. We will all continue to support the club with the same love and passion we always have.”
