Camilo Duran’s goal was rudimentary but still hugely important. The player scored three times preseason but the first competitive effort marks a significant milestone for a forward. He and Kasper Hogh have the making of a potent combination, which will be needed, if opponents continue to make chances at the rate Dundee United did on Saturday.
The result sets up a quarterfinal tie against Newco at Ibrox. Martin O’Neill took an injury-ravaged Celtic team to the same venue on Scottish Cup duty in March. A backs-against-the-wall performance ended successfully after penalty kicks, but it is not the kind of afternoon I would be comfortable sitting through again.
It has become a Glasgow tradition for Celtic to eliminate Newco from this competition, having done so in three of the last four seasons. Ross County, Kilmarnock and St Mirren (in last season’s final) are the only sides to beat Celtic in this competition in the last decade. There are reasons to be optimistic. I also don’t mind the focus this draw will bring to the club.

IMO the defence is Ok, the problem is they don’t have any protection from the midfield, we still haven’t replaced big Lenny or Victor
It’s great to know we now have a serious attacking threat but the midfield/defensive blockade is flimsy by comparison .
Let’s hope we can win the LASK tie 6-5 rather than losing it 6-5

Apart from anything else it’s all terribly monotonous.
The very fact that DU hit the post five time would indicate that all is not well defensively. If AJ is out, then we need to strengthen the right back position to European standards . More importantly, it has become obvious that our present defense needs protection in front of the back four. If we don’t fill this position I would suggest Liam Scales be moved to midfield, sitting behind the other three and we play with two up front, Hogh and Duran. Europe can be a graveyard for those leave gaps through the middle.
Bauer looks very promising, but it is a big ask to become a major play maker at 21. Lucky we have our Captain to show him the ropes.
Anyway, great win on Saturday, 9 goals in two games. Could the nightmares about the French Pretender be finally shifting ?

Colby Donovan has largely overtaken more experienced Tony Ralston since BR introduced him to the first team last pre season, Tony suffered under the disastrous WN period, as did most players in the calamitous recruitment mayhem. I think MON will use both especially if Colby struggles defensively in the CL It was also always very unlikely Celtic would want another RB non hometrained for Europe even a loan, went out the window whe Araujo got injured again.
GK LB and ahem Arne Engels replacement will all need to wait as it seems the first Euro deadline passes without them. Liam Scales covers for Tierney three keepers required for UEFA therefore we’re a Sinasalo knock, away from a potential Euro rookie
Carter-Vickers is like a new signing so it’s five new players in, where the games against LASK will give us an idea, if we’ve progressed. We’ll claim to be CL team once we’re in it, – it’s not the winning but the taking part that comes to mind. The failure to address this problem is a dereliction of duty with £40 million,minimum at stake.MON knows this and should have made it a priority.Seems quite blase about it.Oh wel.

Yep, for years now we’ve seemingly taken the conscious decision to play without a 6.
