Rebalance needed in Celtic central-mid

541

Transfer window business is seldom completed in May, so anticipation based on Neil Lennon’s post-match comments about having bid £3m for a player should be tempered.  We have a long close-season ahead, so I’ll avoid giving a name-check to the teenage midfielder Neil watched on international duty in February and who is being touted as a target today.

The most obvious question emerging from this story is why another central midfielder?  Celtic have Wanyama, Ki, Brown, Ledley and Kayal all battling for places there, but it’s Kris Commons who is a rare entity.  Kris is able to create goals at a rate none of the rest can.  He’s also had a disappointing season, much of which was spent watching the action from the side-lines.

The problem for Celtic in central-mid is balance.  When Kris Commons is injured, off-form, or playing in a wide position, we’re short of creativity in the middle.  For the record, creativity doesn’t mean someone who can turn in a tight space or dribble, Charlie Mulgrew was our most creative player last season (as it now is). This strong area of the squad needs rebalanced.

    Jelly and Gelato,

you do the mhan a great diservice.

Paddys defensive involvement is exceptional, brought the ball out of defence like yesterday on many occasions.

his distribution and vision are excellent, vision for the ball through for Hoopermans 6th slightly over hit, but that vision has been shown throughout his time at Celtic park, personnally I hope he does a Sammy and refuses to go anywhere, I know he has the same heart as Sammy, this is the biggest test/challenge of his life, I’d hope our manager would respect such a decision and encourage it.

We’ve all seen it, some more than others obviously, but there is no doubting the talent, talent always needs encouragement.

If Paddy is allowed to stay, I predict better than Lubo.

he goes on mazy runs when he is not offered options, once in a mazy run its very hard to do anything but concentrate on the next obstacle, but he is one of the very few who is/can still looking for a better option and usually finds someone.

As much as I have enjoyed the huns slow death and will continue to it’s good to be talking football again. 1 central defender and a centre forward who can dominate and score headers please. HH.

I heard the rumour re the Big Crook but Mark Daly tweeted a wee while ago, confirming the documentary will air on 23rd.

  5. Maybe

    1. Whyte and Ticketus have been acting in concert. Ticketus provide the funds to pay off LBG. Whyte has a floating charge, and on the strength of it, guarantees repayment to Ticketus.

    2. Green is Whyte’s preferred choice to see through his master plan ie liquidation. Only when Green appears do Ticketus drop their claim to ownership of future tickets thus allowing Green a clear run at picking up the pieces after liquidation.

    3. After months of smoke and mirrors the huns, and the public generally, are caught mesmerised.

    4. The huns pile in with their season book renewals and a short time later take up a share offer.

    5. Whyte gets paid, maybe over a period of time, but he gets paid. He in turn pays Ticketus.

    6. The debt is dumped and a newco starts debt free.

The question remains ‘Where does newco start?’.

Why has there been no mention of the Green Brigade’s banner addressed to Peter Lawwell?

Have to disagree over Paddy. He just doesn’t have the energy/pace/consistency to do it often enough. It’s a shame because he is a gifted passer of the ball, and is one of the more creative players in the team, but he is too anonymous too often.

Who would you have dropped yesterday for him in the central role? Ledley, Brown or Commons? I wouldn’t have dropped any of them for Paddy. And that’s on a day when Forrest wasn’t available to play behind the strikers, as he has done well this season, Wanyama played centre half and we were missing Kayal and Ki. For me, Commons is as good at passing the ball, is a better goal threat and can fulfil more defensive functions. We have McGeough, Ibrahim, Filip Twardzik and, once he’s fit again, Paul George, all in Paddy’s area of the field and all knocking at the door to be a 15-20 game a season player, which is largely the role Paddy has fulfilled for us. At their age they need that game time to develop, and might not get it if Paddy stays.

If Paddy’s only ever going to be that bit part player then I think it’s better for everyone if he moves on. Is he now 28? Would love to see him succeeding at Celtic, but sadly I think it will be somewhere else.

To clarify – Forrest doesn’t work, for me, as a CAM like Commons. You’re probably right about him getting used a lot next season (his win stats are pretty good as well) but I hope he’ll continue to feature out wide. Europe will be a steep learning curve for him; if he can do well in those games, the sky’s the limit.

    gerryguk7,

Ledley, Brown or Commons, aye any one of them and the rest.

Paddy already showed his stamina is not an issue, has played what was it 7-8 games on the trot and someone else can fill you in on the stats, but if I remember correctly we did not get beat and he put in a few MotM performances.

I’m begining to think more people need to go to specsavers than their vanity will permit, I’ve heard Paddy getting abuse for other players mistakes because the abuser was blind and only found out Paddy wasnt involved in the move when someone shouted him down. Never stopped the ghuy blaming Paddy for the next mistake he wasnt involved in :oD or getting shouted down again :oD)))

I think we may have a problem holding on to Hooper in the closed season if an EPL club come in with a large bid say 8 or 9 Million which many of them can afford we may find it hard to refuse. That is todays football scene Money talks.H.H.

    ……………

I think he has stated he wants another tilt at the CL. He can only improve his self and his profile by scoring at that level.

A mid to bottom EPL team even with wages is not attractive.

At 24 he has all his options open. He knows he can score bags at the SPL level.

His worth can only increase at Celtic. He will go eventually.

Cannot see top six in EPL being interested unless he scores at CL level.

For me we need a GK a ball attacking CH and a target man CF.

If not Fraser then Paul Robinson

I would try for Jamie Carragher on loan.

Buy Jordan Rhodes for upfront sorted.

I totaly agree – we DO need a GK, ball attacking CH and a target man CF but as for your choices –

Forster – FINE (or Gordon) but Carragher – seriously? and Rhodes – a “target man” CF?, too much like what we already have.

As for the creative central midfield – hasn’t a back to form Commons been doing THAT ROLE?

Here’s what Murdo MacLeod (great player – FUD Journalist) has to say today:-

“It’s tough to look at the players to improve the squad without spending big, but if I was pushed about where he should splash some cash I’d look at a genuine No 10.

Neil likes his three at the back system which means a player operates in the hole behind the frontmen.

You need a genuine playmaker in there who will play in front of Joe Ledley and Scott Brown.

Kris Commons has done okay in that area in recent weeks but I’d be looking for a natural in there”.

Sorry Murdo but I think that KC IS a natural in there – so PROBLEM SOLVED.

Recently NL has talked about adding EXPERIENCE to the squad – so why is he spending £3M on a 19 YEAR OLD?

Finally 2 questions for Paul67 – or anyone else:-

What has happened to the tictactics blog? – I used to get it emailed to me and thouroughly ENJOYED it but it hasn’t appeared since Celtic 3 the RIA (Rangers In Administration) 0. AND

It was stated that Hoopers 5 goals were the THIRD time in the SPL after Boyd and Miller – BUT didn’t Harold BRATTBACK once score 5 goals in an SPL game (5 -1) against kilmarnock? – or am I wrong.

  18. kickinthenakas

Kenwye Jones has got everything to be a great player, IMHO, and play at a far higher level than Stoke but Sunderland were happy to see the back of him and Stoke are now the same due to him being an unreliable, lazy so and so.

If someone can man manage his potential then he could be a sensation but even leaving Stoke as a failure I think his demands would be too high, more likely West Ham if they get promoted.

Ticketus – it seems good news for the Huns in that Ticketus seem to be accepting they don’t own a chunk of future Huns ticket revenue.

    ———————————————————————————————————

Depends on what the average hun would see as good news.

Ticketus would probably now want a newly formed company (lets drop the newco bit and say it as it is) as opposed to a CVA so would vote against one.

Therefore them becoming creditors makes a newly formed company more likely

Agree – Paddy’s done well at CM. Not as dynamic as Ledley/Brown, but he has a better eye for a pass imo. The one for Hooper was overhit, but give the guy a break – he hadn’t exactly had much game time.
