Rebellious behaviour will last for years

916

It will surprise no one that Uefa have charged our football club with “the displaying of an offensive banner and setting off of fireworks [sic]by fans”, this action was as inevitable as the dawn.  At least some of our number believes setting off flares in a football stadium is a reasonable action and that provoking European football’s governing body is a smart thing to do.

In terms of protest, “**** Uefa” is not quite up there with Martin Luther’s Thesis or what we’ve witnessed in the Arab world this year.  It’s simple rebellious behaviour, which some of us are compelled by in our teens and a few take a long time to shake off.

Forget calls to self-police, I’ve never seen it work with a football support.  Ever.  If you think you are going to convince anyone the folly of profane banners, flares or even IRA chanting at a football game, save your breath.  Those who are up for the protest (whatever the subject is) are more likely to find your call for restraint as complicity.

This series of protest and consequence will run for years, will split the support and damage Celtic.  Neither the club nor the support has the leadership to do anything about it.  Copy and paste the thoughts you write on the subject, you can use them again without having to retype.

  1. The refs in the EPL are so clearly several classes above the characters operating in scotland its like chalk and cheese.

Most of the EPL linesmen and women would make a better job of refereeing than the spl ones.

Incompetence plus the “honest mistakes” should be their motto.

  2. 3rd clue..

Alex Salmond want’s an independant scotland so he brings in new laws to suit his agenda.

Remember he has looked at the so called deleted data and he knows that catholics are more likely to be attacked than any other religion in this country and this would not get him independence in this country if he has to go through the Catholic European Union.

Is it true that Willie Collum is getting the back of his head shaved so that he gets a clear view of any R@ngers player diving….er ,sorry, I meant being heinously fouled in the box?

  5. If Collum gets up to his usual tricks on the 28th, Celtic should demand English refs for the games against the Tax Dodgers.

‘But despite a string of ongoing problems behind the scenes Rangers’ new owner Craig Whyte has rustled up the cash to avoid having an 8000-strong travelling support locked out of the biggest fixture of the festive season.

So I am behind with the news ….. the huns have already paid Celtic plc for the tickets.’

Media House saying Whyte has ‘rustled (that’s what cowboys do) up the cash’ doesn’t mean he’s paid it.

It’s like Keevins on Clyde dismissing the Sheriff Officers story ‘I spoke to Rangers this afternoon and they said it’s news to them.’

Well, yes it was news, but it had happened.

  8. I think we have to give the Celtic support some credit. The flare throwers and the banner makers must, by now, realise what they did was crazy and must feel increasingly isolated and embarrassed.

Surely even the most moronic of fans will think twice about bringing more shame to our club and ruining the fine reputation it’s had for so many years.

  9. What a lot of Celtic fans would like to know especially those that are coming home for Christmas is

Is there going to be an extra 8000 briefs on sale for the Old Firm game ?

An Old Firm game where there will be no sectarian chanting possibly ?

An Old Firm game that you can take your Granny too ? due to it the rating going from XXX to PG ?

    HAil Hail

  10. Apart from paying up-front for their tickets they should also be made to pay ,in advance, for the stadium damage they will do to the seats and toilets).

  11. Awe_Naw_No_Annoni_Oan_Anaw_Noo – Is there going to be an extra 8000 briefs on sale ?

There was a stall in the local shopping centre selling briefs at the weekend, but to be honest they were pants. (thumbsup)

  22. Let’s concentrate on gubbing the Ayrshire huns before we worry about gubbing the big huns.

Are any of our players near a points threshold for a suspension? If so, leave them out. And I hope Neil tells our players to be very careful: a red card for nothing is a possibility. Of course there would be not time to hear an appeal over the holiday period.

    Merry xmas from paranoidville.

  23. Awe Naw

I would be recommending letting the facts speak for themselves, denying lies wherever they occur, but sticking only to facts, facts, facts. Celtic cannot win a propaganda war.

With regard to appealing the big tax case, I believe it would be Murray’s call, as per the terms and conditions of the £1 mega-deal. He might go down that road to get the MBB to take the flak, but may be dissuaded if it means less leeway for MIH. Worst-case scenario for those of us enjoying this as a spectator sport but kind of ready for the denouement now would be that it would drag on towards 2013, but no matter what Rangers and the MIBs did on the field of play with whatever resources Whyte were able to “rustle up”, they could not compete in Europe and Whyte would just be throwing bad money after bad. He would surely pull the plug.

All very interesting. I’ll be kind of sad when we reach the last page.

  24. As a Celtic supporter I find the whole issue surrounding a very small minority of our fans embarresing. However i dont think our context of events should be distorted by an orgasmic press.

What has happened recently is stupid and immature. However it is not violent and nobody has been attacked in the streets. Celtic fans are not violent but a tiny majority rebels without a cause they fully understand.

I think this can be squashed with a bit of positive initiative but lets not lose perspective.

  25. I rarely post as I find that others have more eloquently expressed any feelings that I want to convey. The recent events however and the way that it seems to have tarnished Celtic have caused me to break with long stance on posting.

I am really struggling to understand the rational of the people that are defending the barner and the smoke bomb.

YES individuals or groups have a right to express their opinion of UEFA …but they should do it, if they wish, in their own time and space and not drag Celtic into it. They were not expressing any sensitiment on behalf of the footbal club. [Eg. You have aright to express you contempt of my neighbough who you do not like…but if I invite you and you agree to accompany me to his home, then you should have the good sense to bite your tongue knowing that you are my guest amd any offence you cause their will be atributed to me. When you next meet him in the streets out of my, company then you can have a square go etc without it impinging on me].

If these people wish to go and expess any sentiments for or against UEFA they should do so in their own time and not when travelling and watching a game on the auspecies of Celtic Footbal club, who sold them the tickets purely to go and watch a game and not to provide a platform for demonstration.

As for setting off a smoke bomb .. someone here justified that as not being important because it was in a half empty staduim…..beggars belief ??… I suppose that their should be a law that says smoke bombs permited if the stadium is less than 25%, 50% , 75% full. If there had been an emergency that needed the stadium to be evacuated during the game … the smoke bomb would have helped to ensure that all were safely evacuated?

From being the best behaved supporters in the world with recognition from both FIFA and UEFA, within a few short years Celtic has become a brand that is now associated with negative sentiments in Europe.

All this because of a few lunatics .. that somehow tries to defend the indefenceable. We were fined because of a few weekend “I am a nerd” singing some songs which we all know will get us into trouble. Instead all accepting it and moving on to get our house in order and limit the damage, a few idiots thinks that they are acting for the fans or club and throws their dummy out of the pram. What I am not quite sure about is what the dummy spitting at UEFA is trying to say: Were they trying to say that Celtic moral compase is so base that we can’t really see anything wrong with singing a song that may offend a section of the population. Or that we recognise that it is wrong, but as others clubs are also singing offensive songs we just thought we might as well sink to their level… maybe I am a romantic but I always thought that Celtic is much more than a club, we are the good guys, so we never take our cue from what others are doing. We are supposed to be a club based on family values …we point the way to a standard of behavior that others can only dream and aspire to, so any celtic supporter who tells me that he is doing it because the supporters of club XXX is doing it clearly are not versed in their history.

It is high time that a few supporters recognise that Celtic is a club that is open to all irrespective of religion , class, political opinion. Hence if you want to express class, political opinion or anythiung else which does not encourage the catholic, ( and I use catholic here to symbolise universal and not religion), nature of the club, then you should find other avenues to express it. Yes we had our roots in Ireland but I am sure brother Wilfred did not set it up just to feed and provide a focal point for just the Irish … it is just coincidence that at the time most of the disaffected in Scotland were Irish….. but even from its humble beginings Celtic was open to all irrespective of etnicity, religion, political leanings or social status.

Those that seem to have a narrow view of the Celtic family, maybe they should “know the history” as the song goes. If they want a club that is neither all welcoming nor treats people both friends and opposition with respect and diginity and puts emphasis on a person’s religion, ethnicity and class … then I think that they should go and find a new club to support that meets their narrow view of humanity. I can suggest a good option for them along Govan area.

There is a good saying that a Celtic shirt does not shrink to fit inferior players . but that is on the field, off the field .. Celtic moral compass does not lower itself to suit those that wish belittle the celtic image. There is a previlage to being a Celtic supporter, you join a worldwide family… but within that family we have a collective family behavioral standard that maens that we are seen as being polite and well behaved whereever we go. It is the responsibility of anyone who is a member of this family to always act in such a manner to enhance the image and reputation of the family.
