Recency bias: Reo, Paulo, Newco

153

Recency bias is powerful.  We remember and place more emphasis on things which happened most recently compared to things which happened before that.  The time period between the recent event and what went before is not important.

Play poorly for 75 minutes and end the game with a strong 15 minutes and, if you have poor perspective, your mind will put more weight on the closing 15 minutes.  Newco fans and their manager clearly suffer from poor perspective with respect to recency bias.

Repeatedly against Celtic this season they performed poorly for the majority of the game, but post-match found comfort that their best period came late on.  This happened again after the Scottish Cup Final, despite losing to a 90th minute winner.  Let them swim in irrelevant consolation all summer.

I am a bit concerned about our own recency bias.  Reo Hatate had a poor final.  Everyone around me at Hampden was asking the same question, ‘When will he replace Reo?’.  The only surprise was it took until the 78th minute until Paulo Bernardo came on and transformed the outcome.

The recency bias part of your brain will be telling you: Reo – poor, Paulo – good.  The memory of where we were when Reo was injured and the midfield was so dysfunctional is well buried by soothing recency.

I don’t know what was wrong with Reo on Saturday, or even his last time out against Newco, when he also underperformed, but when he returned to fitness he transform Celtic and was crucial in our run to the title.  Don’t let a touch of recency bias fool you into thinking otherwise.

Rory Gallagher wrote a great song called Bad Penny. Rod’s wife looks like Hot Penny. 🔥

  2. just because it pisses me off,

DO NOT READ THIS, IT IS ABOUT STADIUM ATTENDANCES.

Saturday night on the radio, either shortbread or 606, someone mentioned that 2nd Rangers had made available a number of unsold tickets and they were still some left on friday.

This amazed me, however between huns blogs and tikkity tokkety and others there were “rangers ” supporters with tickets who sais they were not going to the game,

Maybe they put them back to the club for resale, maybe,

either ways, there were celtic supporters who would like to attend but could not get a ticket.

These diddy clubs, with hardly a cup histroy, should not be getting 50/50 allocations.

    Hampden Park/Capacity – 51,866

    Actual Attendance – 48,556.

    Unoccupied seats – 3,310.

wow, now i know there are big segragations for this game, but over 3,000 seats.

The sfa do not do enough to get all the tickets into the hands of supporters.

those at the match, was there any sections unoccupied in the trad “rangers end ” the top south west corner maybee ?

    for comparisons –

    2001 – celtic v hibs 51,824 – a real capacity crowd.

    2002 – celtic v original rangers – 51,138 (748 given to segregation, i guess)

    even

    2006 hearts v deid gretna – 51,232.

an empty seat means someone is not doing their jobs shame on them.

  3. bigrailroadblues on

    St Stivs

I reckon the empty seats were the decision of Police Scotland to the SFA. Probably couldn’t guarantee the safety of anyone within throwing distance of the hun.

  4. SS,

On this occasion i must agree with your concern over Saturdays ticket allocation.

Far too many tickets going to hospitality, far too many tickets being auchioned, far too many being given as prizes.

Many fans decided to watch the game in the pub with their mates rather than try for a ticket.

Football without fans is nothing, but for many the best match day experience was in the pub.

    HH.

PS ; Where is the condemnation of tje thugs that attacked innocent woman an children in the Merchant City.. We have all witnessed thugs looking for trouble in the same viciniity as our celebrations last weekend. The silence is deafening.

    HH.

  5. BRRB,

we are short changed by thousands of seats every final we get to.

inly hibs have sold out their allocation against us.

  6. the dafty blue shirts in the merchant city, i videos i saw, i didnt get why the straglers didnt get at least a punch.

  7. Watching the highlights of the game

Looking at the highlights its looked like the huns were all over us

Which is far different than my memory of it

So I thought i would check

    =============

    Celtic 63.2% Rangers 36.8%

    Shots

    Celtic 8 Rangers 11

    Shots on target

    Celtic 4 Rangers 4

    Shots off target

    Celtic 1 Rangers 1

    Blocked shots

    Celtic 3 Rangers 6

    Goalkeeper saves

    Celtic 4 Rangers 3

    Fouls

    Celtic 13 Rangers 19

    ===========

    Then I remember….

did filip filop not mention that he had more shots on target, and therefore deserved to win the game?

“We got two shots on target [against], we got a goal and created six shots on target.”

Is that more bollox from him………again lol

Oh the rangers (and the stats) are shite

It was different 50 years ago though; Celtic went into the hundredth final as sure favourites in my mind. I won´t ring off the names of all our players but this was in an age when it was normal to reach a semi final of the European Cup. We had won the Scottish cup against them in 1971. We had won 8 leagues in a row, I thought we were unbeatable against them, especially at a “neutral” ground. However, we didn´t win it and going round to my cousins’ house the next day didn´t sound like so much fun now. However, that was when I saw the upbeat nature of Celtic supporters first hand because the first thing my big cousin was telling me when I arrived was how Billy McNeill had turned round to all the Rankers fans from on high and showed them 8 FINGERS to point out who was still top dog!!

*my memory of that game was not just us bein robbed again, a Jinky goal chalked off for bein marginally offside, as well as another penalty turned down by jrp gordon, and that ‘well supportin thug sclaffin the ball intae the net in their centenary year with a royal princess presentin the trophy, but was shortly after goin intae a Wimpey trailer which was bein used as a toilet and findin the followin, to the tune of an old Newfoundlander song “and on St Patrick’s Day I love to wear the hat my father wore” scrolled on the wall:

“now Celtic are the champions and no hun can deny, we’re here to fight and we’re here to stay and we’re here till john greig dies

We have won the Scottish League again and we’re off to Europe to and we don’t give a f**k for your Scottish Cup, and we don’t a f**k for you”

  11. Talking of the primacy and recency effects.

The Sevco manager who won the league cup (well the semi-final and final of that comp. after Beale won their first two ties) was nominated for the short list of Manager of the Year.

The Celtic manager who won the double of League & SC- the two most important tournaments, did not make the short list.

The Celtic Ladies Manager who won the league did not make the shortlist either but the managers of clubs finishing 2nd, 4th and 6th did.

The award went to the Sevco manager who won both consolation cups.
