Recency bias: Reo, Paulo, Newco

153

Recency bias is powerful.  We remember and place more emphasis on things which happened most recently compared to things which happened before that.  The time period between the recent event and what went before is not important.

Play poorly for 75 minutes and end the game with a strong 15 minutes and, if you have poor perspective, your mind will put more weight on the closing 15 minutes.  Newco fans and their manager clearly suffer from poor perspective with respect to recency bias.

Repeatedly against Celtic this season they performed poorly for the majority of the game, but post-match found comfort that their best period came late on.  This happened again after the Scottish Cup Final, despite losing to a 90th minute winner.  Let them swim in irrelevant consolation all summer.

I am a bit concerned about our own recency bias.  Reo Hatate had a poor final.  Everyone around me at Hampden was asking the same question, ‘When will he replace Reo?’.  The only surprise was it took until the 78th minute until Paulo Bernardo came on and transformed the outcome.

The recency bias part of your brain will be telling you: Reo – poor, Paulo – good.  The memory of where we were when Reo was injured and the midfield was so dysfunctional is well buried by soothing recency.

I don’t know what was wrong with Reo on Saturday, or even his last time out against Newco, when he also underperformed, but when he returned to fitness he transform Celtic and was crucial in our run to the title.  Don’t let a touch of recency bias fool you into thinking otherwise.

  1. Michael Kelly come home…..you were correct on March 4th 1994 when you said…

“Today 04 / 03 / 1994 will be remembered as the day that the Glasgow Celtic Football and Athletic Company Ltd…lost its soul.

The new way forward is what the fans want, but, although it won’t feel that way just now…in some years down the road….fans will start to say to each other, “Oh my…what have we done?”

We need to be honest and upfront about the Rangers – Sevco issue…like the old board would have been, and in my opinion…All seting was rouse to get Wall Street bankers controlling Celtic FC through the backdoor. 👀️

The Kelly’s and White’s allowed up to 30% – 40% of Parkhead attendances in to the stadium free of charge, with a lift over the turnstiles.

And then 20 – 30 years down the road, the Kelly’s and White’s were accused of pocketing 30% 40% of the gate money, by today’s [Carefully planted onto Celtic fan blogs] a clique of PLC board lickers who have little to zero to say about the PLC Corruption, Crookedness, Crassness against the only section of fans, The Green Brigade, who prevent the All Seated ea Parkhead from becoming a boring library? 👀️

Dozens of uncontested trophies in a One Horse environment will never stack up as some sort of reason as to why 60,000 All seated era Celtic fans would rather suck corruption…as opposed to sacking this era of corruption without depth…a bottomless PLC pit of sleekit cowardice.

Was it the Kelly’s and White’s fault that Thatcher’s goons sacrificed 97 innocent Liverpool fans in the Government Psyop [Psychological Operation] in 1989, so that the ‘deep state’ could spin the narrative that Football Terraces were ‘unsafe’ and would immediately need to become All Seated?

I’ve stood in Hampden with 100,000+ sized crowds without a single glimmer of feeling unsafe whilst standing, apart from before the Alcohol ban which removed most of the missiles.

Get the Kelly’s and White’s back….and get rid of the REAL crooked PLC grifters.

Sack the New Board – Reinstate The Old Board – And become thrifty!

Thrifty and Cute and Ballsy and Handsome is the Celtic way, pulling rabbits out of hats, is the Celtic Way.

The All Seated 60,000 Celtic View brainwashed fan bhoys era sucks.

If WeeRon could arrange and Tom Campbell was up for it, would there be value in having a couple of hours of Tom’s knowledge answering any questions we may have?

I think that Tom would enjoy that. I suspect that he’d prefer to do it by email, where he could take his time in formulating his answers. He could send the answers back to you and you could post them as and when you see fit. I’ll ask him.

Alex Gordon’s piece on this site it good. Big Phil is something else when it comes to the excuses he pulls out.

I reckon a lot of their support are aware of this and if we win our next game against them – at Celtic Park – they’ll start putting pressure on him.

As they say – it’s better to offer no excuse than a bad one.

  5. I think the only thing missing from the celebrations, after winning the Cup, was when all the Celtic players went in front of the Celtics supporters. That was time that Joe Hart should have got his hands on a football, placed it on the penalty spot and slotted it into the goal.

The only recurring theme over the last few decades is how they have got away with so many things on the field and yet somehow they are the victims. I suppose it stems from the fact that their Club custodians drove their first Club off a cliff but somehow it was all everyone else’s fault.

I know watching the Cup final that we have either green or blue tinted specs on but really there were 4 or 5 major decisions which went against them, really? There was probably something in the push by Scales but it was outside the box, the referee saw it and VAR could not intervene. But what others? I know for sure we should have had VAR look at the the handball in the first half as well as the kick out not once but twice on Maeda, as well as the wild lunge by Lunstrum on O’Reilly, he was clearly out of control and endangering an opponent.

I suppose you don’t see these when in fact you are watching the game with red mist tinted specs and steam coming out of your ears!

    PA Sport Staff

Cameron Carter-Vickers praised manager Brendan Rodgers for ensuring Celtic maintained the confidence and composure required to end a challenging campaign with double glory.

The Hoops looked to be losing their way as city rivals Rangers roared back midway through the league campaign to briefly overtake them at the top in February.

But Celtic found their stride when it mattered most and claimed 25 points from their closing nine matches to secure the league title before beating Gers in Saturday’s Scottish Cup final.

“There was always that belief, and to be fair to the manager I think that’s what he did well for us,” said defender Carter-Vickers. “He kept us believing and kept a calmness in the group.

“We’re a positive group and we knew that if we worked together and played for each other we’d get there in the end.

“I think we came to life towards the end of the season probably due to a combination of things. Whenever any club gets a new manager, it always takes a little bit of time for their ideas to settle into the group and stuff like that.

“Towards the end of the season I think you saw the fruits of what we were doing earlier in the season.”

Madrid’s commercial court said the European and world governing bodies were practising anti-competitive behaviour and abusing their dominant position.

A similar decision was made by the European Court of Justice in December.

The case was brought by A22 Sports Management, the company behind the ESL, against Uefa, Fifa, Spain’s La Liga and the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

I hope we can be a unified force next season that gets behind a strengthened squad.

Respectfully .. IMHO .. CQN’s contribution to that unification could begin with us setting aside recollections and arguments about who said what during the more difficult times across December to March.

Would it both fair and accurate to say that each of us had our doubts about our ability to win the league this year …. with the strength of those doubts depending on where your personal dial was set ?
