Recent good history against Champions League opponents

475

Celtic will play three familiar opponents in the Champions League group stage: Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.  We have a mixed recent record against Barcelona, eliminating them from the Uefa Cup in 2004, but finishing behind them in the Champions League group stage in the autumn of that year.  Barca also knocked Celtic out of the Champions League in the round of 16 in 2008.  The Camp Nou is the only ground Celtic have managed to avoid defeat on away Champions League duty.

Gordon Strachan’s Celtic eliminated Benfica from the Champions League group stage in 2007 and again in 2008.  They also got the better of Aiden McGeady’s current team, Spartak Moscow , in the Champions League play-off round in 2007.

It is a difficult group for Celtic but each of their opponents will be wary of the Celtic.

  1. Tim Malone Will Tell on

I live in the London area and was thinking about the possibilities of perhaps taking my son to a CL home game.

He is starting college next week, so not too sure of the practicalities yet (it might not pan out) – but wondered if anyone would be potentially interested in splitting a 3 match package for two tickets?

I would be happy with any match – but probably have a preference for either Benfica or Barca.

As I say, not too sure if it will work out at all – but is anyone out there possibly interested?

We are a Glasgow club. Last time I checked that is in Scotland. Instead of moaning about it most clubs are going back to basics and trying to improve our future players.

Del Piero: That would be interesting. When he plays he still looks really classy but he doesn’t last through high tempo physical games. Still has phenomenal touch just phenomenal – and the refs coddle him like a favourite child. I’m not sure how we would play him even in Europe… In the Commons role? A tad unfair on Kris who has doen the business in 4 Euro legs this year already. So some website says we are favourite? I’ll be honest if I was a 37 year old guy from a nice hot country – not a Celtic fan or Scottish – I’d rather spend a year on holiday in Switzerland – so we’ll see.

Boly: Yeah totally. By all accounts a strong quick CB. Mulgrew is covering CB, LB and a midfield berth. Either of Rogne or Wilson is always injured so such a CB is a must.

Connor Wickham: Why? Isn’t he exactly like Tony Watt? Maybe he is better I dunno but if we are going for a striker I would have thought it would be someone that was a 1st pick as right now Commons is playing a deep striker and I don’t see Del P playing every week.

Russell: The price would have to be right. He is a decent player but you reckon that because it is us D Utd will ask for more than he is worth. Surely we aren’t desperate?

Oh no, they scored before I wrote that., I wanted another blow for the Armgeddon theory. Oh well

  9. I’ve been touting young Templeton as a more determined winger with more goals in him than Makay-Stevens but I don’t know if Celtic need him with James Forrest, Dylan McGeoch and Paul George being such talents.

What I do know is that he would be wasting his career to take his developing form downhill with Sevco.

  10. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!.. Ibrox belongs to the creditors on

Just watched the game AGAIN ….Hoops was level with Sammi when the camera paused at ‘impact’ point ….. Not, therefore, offside…..
