Recent good history against Champions League opponents

Celtic will play three familiar opponents in the Champions League group stage: Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.  We have a mixed recent record against Barcelona, eliminating them from the Uefa Cup in 2004, but finishing behind them in the Champions League group stage in the autumn of that year.  Barca also knocked Celtic out of the Champions League in the round of 16 in 2008.  The Camp Nou is the only ground Celtic have managed to avoid defeat on away Champions League duty.

Gordon Strachan’s Celtic eliminated Benfica from the Champions League group stage in 2007 and again in 2008.  They also got the better of Aiden McGeady’s current team, Spartak Moscow , in the Champions League play-off round in 2007.

It is a difficult group for Celtic but each of their opponents will be wary of the Celtic.

Ok guys, I’m hearing tonight #Celtic have agreed a deal to sign Connor Wickham on loan and he will travel to parkhead tomorrow!

and there was (Roy) Keane and Gravesin as well. That Juniho was no spring chicken either. Big reps, long in the tooth and ultimately contributed very little…

Swansea are a Welsh club based in Wales – the last time I checked, that city was still in Wales – but they play in the English League system.

  8. Scotpatsfan –

Apologies. I rewound it twice myself to make sure I heard him correctly. He definitely said – it’s no comfort. I didn’t pick up the bit about a tough group. But the point is, regardless of the draw, we’re still in the CL, so his comment didn’t make sense.

  9. Snake Plissken on

    Hearts very unlucky.

They’d held Liverpool back and took their chance. Then Naively chased it and lost one on the counter.

It helps the coefficient but even though their fans are horrible, I feel sorry for those players who put a lot into that.

Liverpool on the other hand will be looking for a new boss in November. Rodgers out of his depth.

Another hard luck story for Scottish football but at least it wasn’t a 5-0 cuffing.

Keane was superb for us. Never forget when he totally bossed that old club on their own ground

  12. About champions league money…..

Isn’t it correct that TURNOVER is up by £15m? Not profit.

Tunover is vanity. Profit is sanity. Etc etc etc.

Never seen this mentioned before. All about the big pot. I could have this wrong, mind.

  13. Great Performance last evening, well done Neil and the bhoys!

No sweating interesting, not the Celtic way but unexpectedly satisfying!

Tough group but should be some great matches.

Noticed BSR saying he wanted a striker to challenge Watts.

    Well good news.

There will be a goal scorer @ Parkhead to challenge Tony Bhoy, his name is Lionel Messi.

Any idea how much a ticket was?

My Boss who is Canadian was laughing about Sevco drawing at the weekend but he asked me where are they getting all the money to pay these players they are signing?

    Now that is the question.

Maybe that is why Kirk (I am the eggman) Broadfoot had to go because of his old wage?

  15. Snake ….our club have not promised signings …

We knew there would only be a 3 day window to sign once we qualified .

    We have targets…

    They know our interest

It is NOW down to the player

    NOT Celtic .

Agents and players know we have money

They know we need players ..

    They hold the cards !

But I DON’T want knee jerk signings such as bangura Suarez murphy n co! Just for the SAKE of it!

I’d rather let the money burn in my pocket …

We need vital but the correct pieces to fit in lennys exciting jigsaw …

If we cant get them now then I’m happy to run with what we have !

Young uns always seem to be unfazed by big euro teams … Time for Forrest watt filipe and Dylan to shine and gain exceptional experience

I am not just trying to be right here but this is a man who was undoubtedly in the top 5 in the world for more than a decade. I can’t argue with the examples you give but not one of them comes close. Really all of the combined don’t come close!

This is not a 10m purchase and I don’t imagine he is looking for money. He is looking to contribute and achieve something somewhere his family can have a good experience for a year.

If you don’t think he has a heap to offer us then we are in different places

  17. Five Champions’ League qualifiers on Tuesday and four away teams went through.

Five qualifiers on Wednesday and four home teams went through.

Not entirely convinced re young Derek Piero as a player can give us a great deal, except…

…the absolute racing certainty that he can thread a pass through a parked bus windae fae 30 yards

Naka did it from twice the distance and the bus was moving, so can we have Naka back for those CL nights? please

In a quandry about Liverpool, dislike them with a passion, keep stealing our songs, but i would like to see Celtic fan Brendan Rodgers do well, especially with the style of football he plays… agree with Snake Plisken though, BR might just be out of his depth.

  20. Sure we can progress from that group, will be great to see Aiden again , he will get a great reception.

    Hail Hail

  21. West Wales Celt on

    A legend no doubt.

He’s the right age for a coach and I believe we have a vacancy.

    Wrong age as a player…

  22. Hearts played well think its more down to Liverpool being crap though.

It’s all an enigma to me at the moment.

Don’t like hearts but no that all the sevco huns want to see everyone fail. as they are down there wae the titanic.hh

  23. Can’t say Connor Wickham exites me, can’t get a game with Sunderland, or even on the bench.

We have Tony Watt, who from what I have seen is as good, if not better.

    A bit more ambition Pete
