Recent good history against Champions League opponents

Celtic will play three familiar opponents in the Champions League group stage: Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.  We have a mixed recent record against Barcelona, eliminating them from the Uefa Cup in 2004, but finishing behind them in the Champions League group stage in the autumn of that year.  Barca also knocked Celtic out of the Champions League in the round of 16 in 2008.  The Camp Nou is the only ground Celtic have managed to avoid defeat on away Champions League duty.

Gordon Strachan’s Celtic eliminated Benfica from the Champions League group stage in 2007 and again in 2008.  They also got the better of Aiden McGeady’s current team, Spartak Moscow , in the Champions League play-off round in 2007.

It is a difficult group for Celtic but each of their opponents will be wary of the Celtic.

6 points easy from both Barca games..

Ooops – just woken up from dream..

I m delighted.. Being involved fab..

Sevcoites will be sick watching us get cash..

  2. NL:It’s maybe unrealistic but why would you want to finish

third.Anything can happen in the group stages, particularly if we start well.

    Murphy joined Ipswich on loan.

Messi. “el jugador del celta que realmente me preocupa es Kelvin Wilson”

Maybe it’s because I don’t speak Spanish and had to scratch my head over every word that made this really tickle me.

I’m told that’s why Barca never got going against Madrid until the 20th minute last night – Messi was waiting to hear how his hero Kelvin Wilson and his boyhood team, Celtic, got on against Helsingborg!

Once he heard he decided to bend the ball round the wall and score to celebrate!

Exciting and frightening prospect young Messi facing the hoops!!

was hoping we might get them in the last games when they had qualified!

  4. Remember Lenny pushing Aiden in the chest for not tracking back in the last minutes of a game…. ?

The last game will have all to play for.

    Interesting Tim’s.

    Evening All,

Happy with the draw. Just great to be back in the CL if I’m being honest.

Profile increased ( if that was possible): tick

    Chance to attract players: tick

    Revenue stream opportunity: tick

    Happy supporters: tick

    It’s all good.

  6. Celtic’s young team against Barca’s superstars what a learning curve for Lenny and his Lions, Benfica always have good footballers and Spartak will give us a good run for our money, the Bhoys will grow and grow this season and with the young Bhoys coming through Celtic are heading in the right direction, step by step, game by game, exciting times!

Oh and a day left in the transfer windae..

  7. Just 3 weeks to the Benfica game. I hope our three injured midfielders are back fit for it as a win in the first game would be some start.

However not winning our first home game would greatly disadvantage us with two away games to follow.

£84 for the package, fantastic value

  8. If Barca had any manners they would give us 4 points in the games against us. They can beat them other two home and away and we could promise to let them finish top of the group.

After us lending them Henke and more or less winning the European Cup for them in doing so it is the least they can do………

  9. good draw

    although man utds group

looked the wan tae be in

    like the fixtures

we MUST WIN our first game v benfica

    a win at SPARTAK

then a draw @ the nou camp

    a draw in lisbon

£84/£60 concessions for ST holders! Great pricing from @celticfc. If you’ve not got a card this season it’s £105/£75. Full houses all round.

  11. This is ridiculous Bhoys, there is a big game in the league cup somewhere tonight and all you can go on about is the Champions League this, Champions League that, ooh I might go to Lisbon or Barcelona………

Fair enough but try getting tickets.

You won’t have that problem at the pay at the turnstiles Ramsdens Cup games.

  12. Fat Sally 3 match touchline ban suspended for a year. The muppet appears untouchable.

Green’s ridiculous excuse accepted. Some things never change…

Called in sick at work to watch the game yesterday, so decided to take a 2-fer to take in the draw and get over my aching head thanks to some local Portland Timbers fans. Pleased with the group. We have a chance of qualifying that’s even without any signings coming in.

The hordes must be sick to the bone. Comments like ITV’s tweet prove this. They are taking an absolute pasting on the Timternet.

Lenny’s kids are maturing exponentially now. With the exposure of the UCL, we may find increased interest from those with money to burn. Mission accomplished.

  14. They just stated on Clyde1 that it’s £84 for the season ticket holder’s 3-match package.

    Was £95 four years ago.

I was expecting a LOT more than that.

From a progress point of view yes. But from a footballing excitement one – I’m happy. United as usual get the Group of Dearth. How bored must their fans be in the group stages?

By the way Braga – Pot 2? No bad for a pub team!!!! Although I was wondering where Maribor, Unirea and Kaunus were!

  16. Celtic fixtures: The fixtures have not yet been released but the match days have been set as below

    1 Tues 18 Sep

    2 Wed 3 Oct

    3 Wed 24 Oct

    4 Tues 6 Nov

    5 Wed 21 Nov

    6 Tues 4 Dec

The 6th Fixture will definitely not be away against Moscow Spartak who are always away for the last fixture because of the Russian climate.

  17. Drat !!! Going to miss the Benfica game because I will be on holiday in Portugal. How ironic is that ya bas

  18. the stench that is the governing bodies in scottish football

bubbled again today, despite the campions league draw today it

is all quite depressing the state of the game in scotland with

decisions like today, they just cannot apply justice and the rules as they shoud be applied.

  19. Listen Bhoys – Fat Sally used the ‘I’ve been punished enough already’ defence. After all being banned for three games would at least allow him to sit in reasonable comfort while watching the absolute gash that Sevco play. He would also be nearer the pie stand. It would have been a reward.

  20. Quick vote please guys!

Player of the month for August, choice of five…

    A) Kris Commons

    B) Victor Wanyama

    C) Georgios Samaras

    D) Fraser Forster

    E) Charlie Mulgrew

Any others feel free to add but I think these five would be the main men! I will check back at 8.30 for the final result :)

  21. I asked the concierge in my work this morning when the draw for the group stages of the Ramsdens Cup was being made.

Straight faces for 10 seconds then we both burst out laughing.

Hun walks past. Face an absolute picture.

    They are hurting big-time.

  22. Interesting that the news about Swally and Green is released alongside the Champions League draw – do they think we wouldn’t notice?

Management of the release of the news – stinks.

  23. Get the money out Pedro…

Peter Lawwell not at the CL draw in Monaco & replaced by Ronnie Hawthorn means only one thing of course….ongoing transfer business

Al Neri (chewing the tell-tale orange) to Michael Corleone:

    “Difficult. Not impossible.”

    Rocco, I think.

He does the deed and pays the price.

This is going to be such a fun Autumn with this group!

    There will be goals!

  25. Great news on prices as well, £84 for season ticket holders, £60 concession, non season tickets £105, all cheaper than 2008. Tickets on sale from Saturday at9.30am if all fixtures agreed.
