Recent good history against Champions League opponents

475

Celtic will play three familiar opponents in the Champions League group stage: Barcelona, Benfica and Spartak Moscow.  We have a mixed recent record against Barcelona, eliminating them from the Uefa Cup in 2004, but finishing behind them in the Champions League group stage in the autumn of that year.  Barca also knocked Celtic out of the Champions League in the round of 16 in 2008.  The Camp Nou is the only ground Celtic have managed to avoid defeat on away Champions League duty.

Gordon Strachan’s Celtic eliminated Benfica from the Champions League group stage in 2007 and again in 2008.  They also got the better of Aiden McGeady’s current team, Spartak Moscow , in the Champions League play-off round in 2007.

It is a difficult group for Celtic but each of their opponents will be wary of the Celtic.

If I get it I will share it.

From what I have been goggling you need proof of your return flights to buy away tickets. I live in Barcelona so I don’t know where that leaves me.

Watched the game last night in the Michael Collins. Catalan guy next to me had his Celtic top and shorts on plus a Celtic back pack. We will get a very warm welcome here.

I’m hearing Celtic hit a brick wall today re some targets, Johnny Russell is a definite target but not at £2m but deffo between £1.5m-£2m

Hearing a wee rumour that we might be interested in Frazier Campbell from Sunderland— anyone else getting that.

Great draw I think– very tempting to go back to Barcelona again– great city and a great occasion.

Might just be the right timing too

  4. Still really needing a microscope. Has anyone else encountered this?

Happy sums up my mood. I will have the privilege of watching Barcelona at Celtic Park. Here’s hoping our young Bhoys give them a game. I have hopes we might get something from our games against Benfica and the Moscovites. We might yet have European football of one kind or another after Christmas.

Thank you Neil Lennon, every Celtic player and every other supporter who graced Celtic Park last night. It was one of the finest nights I can remember of many, many great nights. It was what we are all about.

@Kieran_Celtic Some more seasoned football heads in Russia are now saying Celtic will be no pushover in Parkhead.

it wasn’t Templeton, it was Paterson but if that had been Liverpool……..

  8. I sincerely hope Matt McGlone is wrong with that info

For the sake of £250-500k we should just be paying it and getting Russell onboard

This has the hallmarks of Fletcher 2009

I have always loved European nights at Celtic Park

last night was the best atmosphere in quite a while and it’s all down to the green brigade…they keep things going and on nights like last night everybody else joins in………….roll on the group games can’t wait

  10. Hats off for the pricing of CL tickets, £84 is fantastic value when you consider its £26 to watch an SPL game.

On Russell from UTD, I cant see who he would replace in the team and the last thing we need is another squad filler, we have just manged to get rid of about 12 so why fill them back up again, use any money to purchase a player who will improve the team, not fill a bench, thats what the youngsters are there for.

  11. The McCoist verdict is appalling. A suspended sentence for actions that could have caused serious harm to innocent individuals…

    Our game is laughably corrupt.

Also I hear Green said some curious things in an interview tonight – hinting that Naismith and others are still registered with Sevco? How so?

Apologies to Templeton. Did you hear the Hearts support singing ‘Sign on, sign on’?

Whats that all about? They do realise its a long walk back to the supporters buses/Lime St station don’t they?

    Stupid fools

Celtic I hear want two strikers and centre back, Stokes is out for 10 weeks and there is no chance of Paddy leaving in this window

  14. Ten Men,

Hertz are clearly trying to fill the dark void left by the Huns. “Sign on…” union flags; appalling aggression towards players at the corner flag…

    They’ve a long way to go, granted…

  15. Wanyama has to stay, the boy is goin to be a superstar if he keeps progressing.

I was in the no7 last nite and was shocked how empty it was.

Hopefully now we’v qualified there will be an influx of investment from companies taking up the reduced prices on offer.

They do have another option though pay a little less to watch the chippy cup in a rundown asbestos ridden cesspit.hail hail.

Teams now know Celtic have a rather large windfall and with one day left can play hardball.

Now PL has shed 100K worth of wages AND has brought in around 7M in transfer money before you touch CL cash.

Money now MUST BE SPENT. Neil Lennon and the players and fans did their part. Most were patient, we understood there was no point in spending before these games unless we qualified. Well now we have and we want some investment in the squad at the back and up front and if we get Del Piero on a short term contract for the CL fine. The young players will learn lots from him but we need reinforcements to give ourselves a fighting chance. That is all we ask for.

I am not pushing any panic buttons yet but if it comes this time tomorrow night an no one has signed there will be a lot of angry Celtic fans.

Hopefully the club know what is at stake and will get the job done 2 -3 players in and Murphy and Bangura not there.

I reckon it will be Barca, flights are cheap, no direct flights to Lisbon and it’s a 9-10 hour drive.

Ah well….Never been to Lisbon, I will keep on at her, Nov is a long time away :>)

And a fair few people who will decide not to purchase CL match packages

A big 25 hours and 55mins ahead for PL + the Celtic board

  20. My son was is in Liverpool today so got a ticket for the Kop for game tonight.

He’s saying that the Liverpool DJ blasted out Sunshine On Leith at half time much to the rage of the Jambos.

Noticed like previous poster the rage/hatred shown by that mob to Liverpool players at corner kicks…..I reckon it’s worse for Celtic players at Tynecastle taking throw in’s in front of the home support than it is at Ibrox.
