JAMES FORREST has surpassed Bobby Lennox as Celtic’s most decorated player – an achievement that has stood for FORTY-FIVE years.
The Lisbon Lion won his 25th and final honour when George McCluskey scored the Scottish Cup clincher against Rangers at Hampden in May 1980.
However, that remarkable record has now been overtaken by Forrest following the Hoops’ fourth successive title which was sealed with the 5-0 success over Dundee United at Tannadice yesterday.
COME IN, No.26…James Forrest tussles for possession with Dundee United defender Will Ferry as Celtic prepare to pick up their fourth successive title in the 5-0 win at Tannadice.
The 33-year-old winger hoisted his personal trophy tally to 26, a spectacular sequence that includes 13 league triumphs, seven League Cups and six Scottish Cups.
Forrest, who also coincidentally hails from Ayrshire, hopes to visit Lennox, 81, the club’s second top scorer with 301 goals, within the next few days.
The evergreen wide Bhoy, speaking to the Scottish Sun, said: “I’ve met Bobby Lennox a few times at games and I am planning to go and see him.
“People say that I have gone beyond him. At this club, it is not about one player or two players, it is so many players, it is the fans, the staff you don’t see behind the scenes and all of that, as well.
“There are so many people you can credit.
“I have met his family and they are all so humble, that is a great example for players coming through.”
ON THE BALL…master marksman Bobby Lennox in his heyday at Celtic.
With five games of the season still to play, including the Scottish Cup Final against Aberdeen at Hampden on Saturday May 24, Forrest has yet to score in the current campaign.
The forward has netted in his previous 15 crusades since scoring on his debut as a teenage substitute in a 4-0 win over Motherwell at Parkhead on May 1980.
Forrest is now pegged on 108 goals for his boyhood idols.
Maybe Bobby Lennox can pass on a hint or two!
