Recruitment and development strategy

146

Brendan Rodgers has settled into a regular starting 11 for his important games.  If you take Kasper Schmeichel out, who at 38-years-old is an outlier, there is a significant consistency in the outfield players’ ages.

Johnston, Trusty, Carter-Vickers, Hatate, Taylor and Maeda are all either 26 or 27.  Kyogo (29) and McGregor (31) are the senior outfield players.  Kuhn is 24, leaving 21-year-old Arne Engels the other outlier.

There are a couple of things to unpick from this.  The first 11 are as close to their physical peak as you are ever likely to find in a team; there is not much more in the way of development Brendan will be able to squeeze out of them.

Arne Engels is so much younger than the rest of the team he will have more than just Scottish idioms to cope with as he adjusts to life at Celtic.  Expect variances in form as he matures.  In fact, if he successfully follows Nicolas Kuhn’s development path, expect it for years.

Only Kuhn and Engels fall into the ‘development’ category.  That’s a problem for the manager two years from now – Brendan or otherwise.  Recruitment is the front end of the football success process.  The player development pathway comes next.  Development imposes a tax on current results, but taxes are worth paying – ask David Murray.

Paulo Bernardo and Yang are both 22 and on the bench most games.  They might step up, but we are highly unlikely to see Adam Idah (23) appreciate in value.  Arne’s ticket price also makes the value appreciation strategy more difficult.

Recruitment and development work today determines results two years out.  The 2025 transfer windows will tell us lots about where we will be in the medium term.

Lots of well made and interesting points and together with Paul’s article, good reading.

I only add that with the news that Palma could be moving and taking Nawrocki, Lagerbielke, Bernabei, Welsh & Holm into consideration, we could fund a couple of young players in the January window, e.g. Miller and Kvistgaarden. The left back berth can wait till the summer, I’d imagine. HH

  3. I see South Korea has just declared Martial Law so that could impact on our current recruitment policy…

Maybe we could look to the North…

I think Welsh is needed for the Uefa home grown quota, maybe if we sign Miller he’ll be able to take his place

I’d like to see him stay anyway, you need people like him in the squad imo.

I agree on the rest, I think we need to cut our losses now, they dont look like they’ll make it in Brendans Celtic.. I dont know about Kvistgarten, I saw he’s been scoring a lot of goals recently so he might be out of our price range now, and he might be looking for a bigger league than Scotland, who knows. I trust that everyone at Celtic has seen enough of Miller and knows enough about him to make the right decision on him.

  5. i struggle a bit on the lennon miller hyperbole.

as he is good for his age, and aye does some things well.

but other than hitting the woodwork has he every really stood out when playing against us ?

his father has said, wherever he goes he has to play first team football, i would suggest that is ot celtic then.

Re buying a League 1 or 2 club, i meant in the English League.

If our development players aren’t up to that standard at 19/20 it’s unlikely they will be good enough for us.

Also, if they go there and after 12 /18 months they aren’t quite what we need, we can sell on at a higher fee than if we sent them to Dunfermline etc.

Personally, I would look to buy Carlisle.

Geographically it’s a good fit, they don’t appear to be going anywhere and 3 or 4 of our players plus 1500 of our fans going to their stadium COULD work well for everyone

  7. carlisle, schmilisle..

play in red white and blue, got a wee loyalist group in their support and themselves not celtic friendly at all.

    nay never,

  8. In regards to Paul’s article ..

Think we should also be looking at the future managers roll, not sure how many more years Brendan will be here?

Do we employ in house or get someone in that can learn the tricks of the trade from Brendan..

Wondering if Calmac might step up ?

  10. never really bought into the buy a team to develop players, other than b teams abroad where is an example of it actually working ?

for example, anyone a huge success at city that started of at any other part of the city group ?

  11. Seems certain to be Beaton for the League Cup Final.

Clancy for them Sunday and he did our semi.

Robertson has Aberdeen game v us tomorrow.

The wee teacher guy from their school reffed the last game v them at CP.

    Brother McLean not capable.

Not sure any others and so it will be Beaton.

  12. Good to hear we will be trying to strengthen again in January, and hopefully get a few out as well.

  13. Always like reading Alex Gordon’s articles on CQN – no hyperbole, just honest to goodness sports writing.

    —————————–

last seasons controversial decision , for me, where var inputs and less so on field decision making, huns disallowed goals were fouls, they can bleat all they want, but they were fould, same for borderline offisde, you are either on or off.

    we benefitted correctly.

it was games against others were they racked up many penalties for hand balls, but their extra goalkeepers were vever punished.

whisper it, but has wee willie made an impact by saying to the body of the kirk, we cannot keep doing this because its open and out there now ?

has their penalty supply dried up just because they are pish and hardly in the box, or becuase of the above or is it both.

still no complaceny, a decision could still go against us wrongly, but having said all that, when was the last time they actually beat us fairly ?

the dead rubber that didnt mean anything to ange, and a pity he throught that way.

or as far back as covid season ?

i watched their game against st johnstone, for all the modern over analysis, mugs in the studio trying desperately to find positives, i kept coming back to , they look like us circa 1993/94

    absolutely dire at everything.

a season of draws for them.

and trust me on this, they lose the worlds most successful club title (in their heads0 it is stake through their blacvk hearts.

one funny, poor , depressed charachter on radio last night, “ah chucked it in when he started saying we had a moral victory, for a draw at ibrox, hahahaha, that was the day i knew we were winning the league.

  15. Sorry pressed wrong button there……..to continue. He devotes his latest piece to Greg Taylor and the impasse that has seemingly developed around his contract negotiations.

Money of course will play a big part, but maybe not the biggest, in Greg’s thinking. There is no doubt his agent has sussed out some interested clubs and therefore the player has options. I suppose if Celtic had made him an offer he couldn’t refuse, then he would have signed already. I’m sure a good offer has been made, however could be the guy just wants to try another environment. He’s played in Scotland all his career to date and maybe just wants a change before he gets too old and less attractive (to other clubs I mean).

I would like him to stay as he has never let us down and gives his all in every game – but I would wish him well should he leave – he has honoured his contract and owes us nothing. HH

    ……………

Has he written anything about Celtic PLC’s part in cementing the same club lie, when in 2016 we, well some of us saw Lawwell and Desmond putting old Rangers ticket prices onto the tickets of new club Sevco in 2016 after Sevco got promoted?

Or, is he just another poster bhoy for Celtic’s all seated era, pro Old Firm PLC, 60,000 happy clapper customers.

Who was the former Scotland International that kept goals for East Fife?

  19. Tom McLaughlin on

Greg Taylor’s impasse on a new contract is not about money. He sees the writing on the wall and doesn’t fancy playing second fiddle to a new left-back.

  20. they are taking the big fill comments quite well.

new chairman has turned them down

copland road stand is still not finished

and phil telling them it will be next season before these players all get it together and be better just look at across the city.

em, celtic won a double last season, all we done this year is get even better.
