Recruitment and development strategy

Brendan Rodgers has settled into a regular starting 11 for his important games.  If you take Kasper Schmeichel out, who at 38-years-old is an outlier, there is a significant consistency in the outfield players’ ages.

Johnston, Trusty, Carter-Vickers, Hatate, Taylor and Maeda are all either 26 or 27.  Kyogo (29) and McGregor (31) are the senior outfield players.  Kuhn is 24, leaving 21-year-old Arne Engels the other outlier.

There are a couple of things to unpick from this.  The first 11 are as close to their physical peak as you are ever likely to find in a team; there is not much more in the way of development Brendan will be able to squeeze out of them.

Arne Engels is so much younger than the rest of the team he will have more than just Scottish idioms to cope with as he adjusts to life at Celtic.  Expect variances in form as he matures.  In fact, if he successfully follows Nicolas Kuhn’s development path, expect it for years.

Only Kuhn and Engels fall into the ‘development’ category.  That’s a problem for the manager two years from now – Brendan or otherwise.  Recruitment is the front end of the football success process.  The player development pathway comes next.  Development imposes a tax on current results, but taxes are worth paying – ask David Murray.

Paulo Bernardo and Yang are both 22 and on the bench most games.  They might step up, but we are highly unlikely to see Adam Idah (23) appreciate in value.  Arne’s ticket price also makes the value appreciation strategy more difficult.

Recruitment and development work today determines results two years out.  The 2025 transfer windows will tell us lots about where we will be in the medium term.

    Valle is only here for another seven months, as far as we know, and the two are sharing at the moment. – is Greg peeved about this arrangement? Does the KT recurring story have legs?

     

     

    The strange thing is that Brendan talks in glowing terms whenever asked about Greg and always says “I hope he stays” – I do too!! HH

    I know Malcom Offord and was amazed he was being touted for this. He suits some aspects of their club but he is does not have any experience of any consumer facing business. Nor indeed anything as public as that organisation. On a personal level I would only reckon it would be a losing bet for him. Just as it was for a watered down version of himself in John Bennet. Who was far too nice a chap for it anyway.

    And as for Erin Cuthbert……At risk of stating the obvious I will quote my pal who said ‘she even looks like one of them’……. She is a wee bit over rated as a footballer in my humble opinion.

    So that would suggest it is either about money, or, as I alluded to earlier, he just wants a change of scenery. He was 100% first choice before Valle appeared having seen off Bernabei comfortably. HH

    I think he’s still the first choice in Brendan’s eyes, he’s been offered a new deal which clearly isn’t enough, to get him to sign. I hope he does, and think he’s underrated by some of the support but not by BR.

    If he has knocked them back thats a massive blow days before the AGM. They would have been desperate to have him chair it or at least introduce him but all that does is add to the narrative of them being in chaos.

     

     

    I have no idea what he’s like but his professional record made him look like a serious guy. The main role of the chairman isn’t to be public facing, its to chair the board and make sure it’s functioning properly. He has experience of chairing boards of proper organisations and a decent career in politics, one of the reasons why John Reid was seen as a decent successor to Brian Quinn was that he was able to chair a cabinet office, a lot of those skills are what makes for a good chairman.

     

     

    This is a real embarrassment for them. They’ll really struggle to get someone decent

    It is not very pc to say this but I was astonished at the massive chunk of budget the SFA spend on women’s football. I heard a rather indiscreet president of the SFA speaking about this after a good few drams at the open in Liverpool last year.

     

     

    Watching that effort tonight by a bunch of feted exile Scot’s in their national teams colours I reckon it’s wasted. Absolutely no way they were winning against a very average Finnish team who girl for girl were not playing at the same level as the Scot’s team.

     

     

    I am inclined to agree with the innermost thoughts of the SFA president on this issue. A total waste of money.

    Re,replacing Taylor.We have tried numerous times to do this.A couple of the loanees we had were valued in the £10 million bracket.Flopped.

     

    LB,a good one,will set us back a lot of money.

     

    Only local one I have seen,is Penrice at Hearts.

     

    Big world out there right enough.I would try and get Valle for another year,in the meantime.Barca might be amenable.Would like what we know for the CLQs.

    As a team we used to be to many young players who had potential but all the players still to prove themselves. As soon as they did they quickly exited for bigger leagues and more money. We lacked experience and it showed. I prefer the balance now albeit that there are still to many fringe players.

    GT,recently married and starting a family.This next contract will be his last big one.What he is looking for,who knows,but you can bet when we signed him from Killie,it would not have been above £10,000 a week.Maybe a good bit less.BR wants him,you would think he would get him,unless his agent has sussed out £25 grand a week.Small wage in the Championship.
