Recruitment metric to improve

133

Successful recruitment requires several elements:

Player analysis
Development
Opportunity

Recruitment will fail without even one of the above aspects. Celtic should look for metrics to measure, not just on those who remain in the squad, but those who leave.

Look at two player who left last year: Alex Bernabei and Oh Hyeon-gyu. Both have had very productive times since moving on from Celtic. Alex has been a stand-out in the Brazilian league, while this week Genk rejected a €10m opening bid from Feyenoord. Overwhelming evidence suggests that both are more than good enough to succeed in the Scottish Premiership, but whatever talent they had withered in the South Stand on matchdays.

We are not in the business of buying the finished product, Celtic coaches are there to coach talent into better players. And when they achieve this, the player has to be given an opportunity to deliver on the pitch. On leaving Celtic, Alex and Oh were given the opportunity to show their talents and thrived.

Recruitment needs to be aligned with squad requirements. Coaches must be able to improve players (substantial evidence that this happens at Celtic) and the manager needs to make space in the team or the whole exercise is a waste of time. None of this is easy. Failures happen at every stage, but without recording the post-Celtic metric, we have insufficient data to measure how and where we perform well and poorly.

Oh and Alex will not be the last players we look back on and wonder why we did not see the best from them. Maik Nawrocki, Gus Lagerbielke and Tomoki Iwata will follow, Tomoki is already flourishing at Birmingham. I am also worried Yang – who clearly has something about him – will continue to endure long absences from the pitch.

If I was an agent speaking to Celtic about my player, “Opportunity” would be mentioned in every conversation, it is the hard question we have to ask of ourselves.  Still, at least we got the best out of Nat Philips and Auston Trusty.

    Great news about Shaun Maloney.

Putting a professional with a very decent pedigree into the role.

Maybe we’re getting serious about the pathway

  3. Shaun Maloney was a great player for us. Loved it when him and Aiden were in the same team. If only we could produce another couple like that. This role might suit him really well.

  4. I was lucky enough to see Shaun score one of my favourite goals V Rangers (I don’t think it was Sevco). Will look for a link later.

    Re Podcasts

There is a very good podcast called “it was what it was”that has a couple of episodes featuring the Celtic v Racing Club games.

The ones about racing club are called “trilogy of violence” and are well worth a listen imo.

I’ve also listened to a couple of others that caught my attention.

If you have the time, and the interest, this is the control document from UEFA of how FSR Financial categorys are to be reported and adhered to.

IMHO, non accountant, but Real Estate experiences, I know my way around accounts and benchmarking reports.

It is well worth a digest, and for me anyway, it determines why The Rangers will be more transparent than before and must adhere to the timing cycles, there is no wiggle room anymore.

Also good for explaining what actually are football revenues and investments.

Just seen the gallant pioneers along with william wilton bill struth and primrose ure rowing up the Clyde in their romper suits. Apparently one of them never made it to shore. Allegedly.

  24. I think how curious it is with Celtic signings. Some are big successes and leave for big transfer fees, whilst others don’t prosper and eventually move on.

Curiously, when they move on from either categories some prosper elsewhere like Oh and Bernabei and others run into issues like Jota, Kyogo and O’Reilly. I find it hard to predict. For example, I thought Edouard had it all. Right Left Headers pace Physicality and ability however, it has all turned to stone. Dembele I thought also had it all and could have paid with anyone.

How some are successes and others are not is a puzzle. Its also a bit of a lottery when we make signings and how these succeed or not. Holm looked like a player but it never happened. Nawrocki another. Pukki looked terrified at Celtic but prospered at Norwich.

Is it because they dont fit the managers formation and tactics or they dont suit our club. 60,000 mad fans roaring them on must excite some but frighten others.

I know there is no magic wand as Engels and Idah cost £20m and Henrick and Lubo less than £1m.

It really is important that we bring our players through the academy as transfers seem to be a bit of a lottery whether we use analytics or coaches with good eyes.

  26. All this talk of who is to blame for what is absolute rubbish.

I personally only care about the best outcome for Celtic.

I really couldn’t care if it is Peter Pan or Peter Lawwell or St Peter who is involved, to blame or to get credit.

What does amaze me is the Celtic fans think we are somehow in a better place in terms of squad and team now than in January 23. I can’t see this at all personally.

Given that Kuhn and Maeda are potential departures it feels we have a lot of work to do in order to get back just to where we were.

We have had a domestic rivals in chaos and meltdown this past 2 seasons and the benefit of direct euro CL access. No matter what both of these things won’t be in evidence this season.

It is Brendan’s 5th window since he returned. His 3rd with total control. I really hope it is his best.

  27. Interesting re-showing on ‘War Walks’ on BBC4 at 7.30pm (and now on BBCi player), Richard Holmes account of the Battle of the Boyne of July 1990. Could quibble about some of the emphasis and some of the detail, but generally speaking worth a watch, and it does give a good context, not one fully accepted or understood by those who formed the Orange Lodge in Ireland over a century later. Turns out the Dutch Prince (and son in law of James II) narrowly escaped death before the battle even got started, and therein lies a story. Not the only one of course. Only time he ever set foot in Ireland and never in Scotland despite what we have to put up with in his memory.

  28. Dont often correct myself on here (why when there is rarely such a need) but for 1990 read 1690……

Don’t know if this story is true or not.

After the Battle of the Boyne ended, William III was walking through the battle zone when he happened upon James II sitting on a fallen tree next to the river.

    James was weeping bitterly.

Despite being on opposite sides, the kind hearted William walked over to comfort James …

… but the defeated monarch was inconsolable

“I’ve just lost this huge battle” he wailed.

    William replied.

    “Relax man.

    This was just a skirmish.

This time next week everyone will have forgotten about it”

    🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
