Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

    Top 16 refs, if only.

Needs to be a ref from a neutral country with tier 1 standing.

I dont know how they choose their refs, dont care as long as it is to an extent balanced.

What I do want to know however is how they screen referees and classify them?

By which I mean how to they review referees and decide who the highest qualified are?

I mean for goodness sake there are two scottish refs in the top category.

Does that count as an honest mistake?!?!

    Paul67.

On wednesday I posted an extract from the article you mention about the various views across the continent. I found the article quite enlightening and could be argued it says something about the respective governing bodies.

The one I drew specific attention to was the French.

Has Mr Platini commented yet? He had a lot to say before the game.

Why would he? He probably hand picked the referee, job done!

  3. I see barcabhoy busy on Twitter regarding Chuckles comments he scared LloydsTSB into concessions by threatening to mobilise the hordes.

What a disgusting little country this is turning out to be…

I thought Charlie was in the team on Tuesday for his accurate delivery from set pieces so I was surprised and I must say a wee bit angry to watch KC drop the ball to Buffon almost every time!!

Agree, sure Efe had a free header at one point. Had Victor been in that position, it would have been 1-1 and with us on the front foot.

    Mort

I think even I could have scored from that chance!

However Victor did miss with a good chance from a corner(he headed over)in the first half-not as clear cut as Efe’s but he should have hit the target.

Also agree with Hamiltontim re short corners-think we only tried it the once and it led to Efe’s unbelievable miss!

I seem to remember Celtic doing our homework on referees in the past-even down to finding out which particular ludj they were in,and how long it took Jim McCluskie to fall down drunk at a walk.

The papers gave us a doing for it,and overall it did us no favours.

A bit like that cheating mob on Tuesday.

I’ve just watched the match, and I don’t know which is worse-a bunchacheating Italians,or a showeraconniving Spaniards who condoned and encouraged it.

As usual,we are supposed to suck it up-tbh,there is little we can do-but let’s go out with a bang in the return!!!!!!!!!!

I think the bottom line is we have always been too honest in European football. We don’t timewaste, try to get opposition players booked, don’t play on guys on a yellow card etc etc.If that’s the way we have to play to progress…?? I’m not sure a lot of guys would sign up to see that.

I don’t like the idea of trying to get players booked or faking injury, but if an opposition defender picks up a yellow card I see no reason not to run at him.

  9. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

I believe the referees supervisor is also told not to rock the boat.

If all the supervisors were to report accurately on what they, and we, witness, there would be no competent referees left.

They are all protecting there wages and future income and are just as corrupt as those that “run” the game.

We need to make sure we can direct enough of our 17 attempts on target, against Juve, far away enough from their keeper to make a difference.

    Wow! Imagine if we’d won 17 – 0!!!!

We wouldn’t be on here bumpin’ our gums about bent refs!

We’d be in the last 8!!

Dreeeaaaamss, dream, dream, dream dream, dreaaaaammsss……

  10. Mort

We took two short corners and one created the header for Efe. The other was a chance similar to Mulgrews goal against ICT and for Scotland. Why we didn’t persist with that route after the first couple of corners was strange.

    Hamiltontim

Mulgew is our best corner taker from the left and Commons can strike a ball. Put Commons on the edge of the box and get Charlie to take them from one side and Commons from the other. Both angles covered. Every player in the team should be able to take a set piece with great accuracy. It’s a shocker in the modern game that certain players can’t take corners and free kicks. Watch Buffon in the return leg. He is better with the ball at his feet than some of the outfield players in the SPL. I bet he could take a corner. Modern players need to work on their technique and dead balls more.

Do you watch much of Hibs? MMy Mrs is a Hibee. leigh Griffiths takes every free kick and corner for them. That bamboozles the life out of me. You take your best striker out of every dead ball situation to take them? Absolute bonkers. Teams have them sussed. Give away free kicks to Hibs in your own half and nullify their threat by having their best player take them and hit them on the break. St Johnstone done it 3 teams on Monday.

Lomas might not be everyone’s cup of tea but the guy has a good football brain. I have been saying to the wife for weeks that Fenlon needs to get someone else taking the set plays. Didn’t make me popular but she knows I’m right! Haha

  11. Maybe the Exiled Tim is right, there is some sort of Masonic cabal in operation (although I must admit Exiled, I dont go in for conspiracy theories) What is it that is stopping at least prosecutions and outrage etc over every god damn disgraceful event that has thus far been uncovered with regards to that current/ex football club and all who run/support it ?

Are the authorities that troubled by what the lunatics will do ?

    Nothing is really making sense.

This sordid affair has gone far beyond mere trivial football matters.

  12. philvisreturns,

Sounds like a space odyssey 2013 philvis Kubrick stylee.

And congrats to Hamiltontim on an awesome podium.

  13. Dessybhoy…. That is a very good point. Perhaps one that UEFA should be looking at. Maybe the disclosure of who the officials are should be kept confidential till the last possible practical time.

  14. TET @10:52 (previous article) I agree there is suppression of debate on the tax issue.

I don’t think it’s a masonic conspiracy. Celtic fans tend to overestimate that lot.

I’m personally acquainted with members of the consultanate down here in London who average £250k a year and pay about £5k in tax and insurance. Some of these guys are decidedly not masons, and I don’t know any who are.

The core of professionals who now run this country have a lot to lose if tax law is “enforced ruthlessly, relentlessly and without fear or favour.” The refusal to discuss this issue is a reflection of the collective fear of these individuals. Grandstanding on an anti-American platform is a smokescreen. (Amazon, Starbucks …)

Beermats in pubs aimed at the new crop of self-employed fools no-one. It’s just an appeal based on prejudice against a non-existent stereotype of working class manual workers who sign on, work cash in hand and spend it all in the bookies and the booozers.

It’s estimated that if the tax were collected the national debt would be gone in 2 yrs and ironically much less tax would then have to be levied.

The dichotomy is that the UK cannot borrow forever The problem will have to be addressed. Not least by senior civil servants who look at their pensioned off counterparts in Greece living in penury and shudder.

The current wholesale of public assets, mainly land, will only stem the flow.

I was involved with the recent protest over the closures at Lewisham hospital. £20m needed. Yet no-one in the council, unions or professions was paying any mind to the sale of hospital buildings in the area for roughly the same sum – earmarked for “future capital invesment.” Sceptical I am.

Recent madcap proposals like privatising the police force (or is it service) show how little understanding the current incumbents at Westminster have of what a State is.

Gordon Brown had the tax evaders on the run 10 years ago and I’ve never been able to find out why he eased off.

In the meantime the two things which cannot be shifted or hidden from view will be the target of increased taxation. Energy consumption and property. This is further indicated by the governments refusal to review the value basis of property tax until 2017 at least. So tax will be paid based on fairytale values.

Conspiracies by their very nature are not susceptible to enquiry. They’re about belief. Masons I’ve known in London have been near the bottom of the pile.

BTW I cannot process your TLA ,”TET”, without thinking of the 1968 Vietnamese Uprising.

  15. Spirit.

Indeed, that would be time to hang up the ole podium chasing crown once and for all.

    In disgrace.

  16. Philbhoy – It’s just the beginning!

    12:47

You suggest there are competent referees to begin with.

    Are you sure?

  17. Still trying to take in that defeat from tuesday night.. I would have no problems if we were played off the park and beat by a top side. Whats annoying is we could quite easily have won that match 3-1 or 4-1 and had one foot in the last eight.

Schoolboy mistakes from ambrose, a glaring miss from a free header from ambrose, an absolute pr*** of a referee who let them away with murder.

although in saying that with our recent record of penaltys there is a pretty good chance we would have missed those penalties anyway.

Back to spl duties 2maro and a euro hangover could well be on the cards..

Players heads now dropped, champions league dream pretty much over for this season.

lennon needs to freshen it up 2maro and bring in the likes of rogic, watt etc…

You bring an interesting point but I’m going to take it the other direction

Sorry if this has been brought up already:

3 times Juve took a corner to the man outside the box to strike while running onto it.

We could see it in the stands and you could even guess which one they were most likely to aim for.

    3 times.

Thats one, one and another one.

Why did we not try to combat this?

Not that it made a difference as they didnt score from those opportunities but surely we had to have someone on the pitch who would notice that danger and respond accordingly?

Yes Efe ran out to close it down but that isnt always enough.

Considering the amount of shots corners usually lead to they got 3 from the 3 of those they tried.

In another game that could have made a big difference.

So. I would say this is something to watch out for in the future.

Good old BT aren’t to blame, but my imperious hubris in believing I could rely on the 3g connection on my phone to alert me on time proved my undoing.
