The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players. In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished. Who knew?
Juventus knew. I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.
You have to admire their thoroughness. They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it. Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’. The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.
It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.
Every day’s a school day.
I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!
On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.
The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

The players in the box would be my first answer though given the holding that was going on it reduced our danger at corners to nil which was Juve’s tactic from the get go…

Paul,
Re Rubentus analysing the referee. Surely they would also need to analyses the goal side and line referees also as they can signal for a pen in the box?
A few ghuys on here seem to admire the so called prep and ‘ professionalism’ of the Italians, not me, don’t ever want us to go to their depths, CHEATS.

I know what you’re saying but teams all over the globe have players doing specialist jobs. CSB has mentioned how Rooney often takes set pieces for Man Utd.
Fergie is no mug, there’s a reason for this. Quite simply he sees Rooney being more effective as the deliverer rather than the receiver.
I still don’t know though who was at fault for our lack of success in set pieces on Tuesday night though. Commons or those assigned to attack the deliveries?
Horripilation is another word for getting goosebumps

Meant to add, do we all believe that not one of the SIX officials thought that the shenanigans going on the the Rubentus pen box was illegal and merited a penalty?
No me neither.

I think you are confusing national debt with deficit.
The National Debt has been on the go for nearly 400 hundred years. It’s how the wars against France and Spain were paid for.
(Incidentally a quick calculations shows that with a compount interest of 5% per anum over 400 years. £1 borrowed then would account for £285m today.)
The problem is not National debt per say, but deficit. I doubt the national debt will ever be paid off. But we need to keep up the loan payments on it. Having an unmanageable deficit means that we can’t afford these payments.

Gershon was subbed last week, injured.
As long as Watt and McGeough are fit they will be certain STARTERS!
Won’t they?
Celtic in lack of planning shocker.
If we had watched Juve and how they defender corners, if all the players were at training and not in Africa, they could have worked on ways to counter act what they were doing.
Or at least if we didn’t know we could have changed it at half time!
All the players bunch up at the 18 yard line, then spilt, players unable to hold.. Am sure there are more ways to counter it.
But we should have been ready for it, we should have been any to change.
What do we work on in training?

As far as I am aware the identities of match official for the CL are only made public about 48 hours(?) before the game.
Are the clubs informed before that ‘tho?
So Juventus were able to study 4 matches involving Mallenco in the build-up to the game?!
Do they have a video department that records every top-level match in Europe over the course of a season, keeping tabs on referees as well as players?

I recall an article in a recent 4-4-2 which stated that a company has all the information clubs need re opposition,so I’m sure the same info is available re refs.
They would only need call and ask for dvds of four matches he reffed, same as asking for our last four home Euro ties, with all statistical analysis done for them.
Pity I give these mags away once I’ve read them-the latest one has a cracking article about Bor, Dortmund,btw,]…..
I like Ikea. They do good work in developing economies and treat their suppliers well.

I’m surprised so many bibles were printed. It’s not like there are new verses in it each year. People tend to have one bible, and that’s it for life.
Ikea keep changing what’s in their catalogue.

One of the most pointless comparsions I have ever seen in my life.
Afternoon all.
As I mentioned last night my thoughts go out to the family of Joe Gallagher who captained Clydebank to the West of Scotland Cup in 1949-50.
Joe played with my dad in St Stephen’s Boys Guild and went on to play for Dundee and Dumbarton I think, He died earlier in the week– and I think his son wrote in the Celtic View.
On other stuff— I see all the RangerstaxCase posts have reappeared………..
Also keep your eyes on the twitter account of Paul Kimmage the Irish journalist and former cyclist who chased Armstrong– he is asking some awkward questions re Team Sky, Sir Dave Brailsford and Sir Bradley– backed by other articles from France.
Of perhaps even greater relevance are the events in a Madrid court where one of the cycling dope doctors are on trial. Evidence is being given by those who have previously claimed that they know and have seen that this guys clients include Spain’s leading footballers.
This morning evidence has been given which says that there is absolutely no chance that the same banned substances are not used in European football……….
So why did we not do our homework?
The guy who started Ikea in the 60s -Ingvar Kamprad- is one of the world’s wealthiest individuals worth an estimated $40 billion in 2012.

I completely agree with the point you make about us not closing down or marking opposition players effectively at corners.
This is nothing new though, it has been a bone of contention now for years with me!!
Successive Celtic teams have been poor in this department.
In a Binary world, 111100100011011 is a source of intriguing facts about herring.
I would be into my conspiracy theories, but what is happening in scotland isn’t a theory imo.
Fear is what is controling things in scotland, jurnos can’t print the truth, threats to burn down stadiums, etc, etc.
I still am of the belief that the shame game was a set up, amazing how a couple of days later the government had a summit, and lo and behold, new legislation came about, aye right.

You will be surprised who is actually in the craft.
But i was talking about things in relation to scotland and the powers they hold sway.
