Referee Mallenco scouted ahead of Celtic game

1081

The Guardian did an excellent piece on Wednesday on how referees in various European territories would view the penalty box wrestling of the Juventus players.  In short, there is a variance in how these offences are punished.  Who knew?

Juventus knew.  I hear they watched four videos of referee Alberto Undiano Mallenco ahead of the Celtic game.

You have to admire their thoroughness.  They had a plan to combat Celtic and needed to know if the referee would let them away with it.  Gone are the days when someone at Juve would simply pick up the phone and ‘ask’.  The danger from Celtic was known, illegal holding would nullify this danger and watching a few videos established what players would get away with.

It’s no longer sufficient to scout your opponents, if you want an edge in this game, scout the referee too.

Every day’s a school day.

I hear from a good contact that a journalist who recently departed the media for a job in the lower leagues once wanted to be a bit of a Jungle Jim. Apparently he was keen to ditch his industry for a job at Celtic back in the 90s. What an escape!

On Friday 1 March the Lisbon Lions will be at the Kerrydale Suite providing commentary and answering questions on their magnificent European Cup final win in 1967. This has never happened in 46 years since that game, to say it is a unique opportunity fails to tell the whole story.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I cannae wait for the return over there.

We have been done by cheats before and overcame them.

Celtic are so far ahead of the curve it is scarey, I just hope the paper doesn’t run out.

It will be highly symbolic if Celtic beat that shower in the next game, we’ve never won in Italy?

Mea Culpa-twice I have asked a friend in The Philippines (many will know who I mean) to plead for intervention at the Shrine to Our Lady which resides in splendour in his back garden.

On both occasions, many would have suggested St Jude instead!

    Came up trumps both times…..

He phoned me on Monday, the subject didn’t come up-it would have been inappropriate anyway-and I think it may be just too much to ask now!

Maybe I’ll just ask him to plead for a decent referee for the return.

I’d sooner a year of bible classes than one single trip to IKEA.

It’s not exactly bragging rights down the pub (more the hairdresser’s), but I’ve visited the biggest IKEA in the world. So there. The meatballs were just the same.

    JOE MCHUGH – 15 FEBRUARY 2013 10:40 AM

Efe Ambrose has hit back at Kris Commons in the row that has dominated the aftermath of Celtic’s Champions League defeat from Juventus.

Ambrose hits back in row with Commons

The defender had a nightmare performance in the Celtic defence after telling Neil Lennon he was ready to play just two days after helping Nigeria win the African Nations Cup in South Africa.

Ambrose side-stepped his country’s celebrations, took a 12-hour flight to the UK then found himself the fall guy for Celtic’s defeat.

Breaking the unwritten footballers’ law of not publicly blaming a team-mate Commons said: “If he felt good, then he should have put in a better performance.”

Neil Lennon took to Twitter to defend the decision with Ambrose breaking his silence to reply to Commons.

“No one individual should be blamed for the loss,” Ambrose said. “Football is a team game, we lose and we win together.

“Jet-lag did not affect my performance, I was not affected by the journey. It is just that football did not go our way on the night. If we had won, I wouldn’t have been criticised.

“Instead, I would have been praised for my professionalism in deciding to travel to the UK instead of Nigeria with my international team-mates.”

Lennon must pick his players up for tomorrow’s SPL visit from Dundee United.

    formality

A 17-point lead in the SPL makes the destination of the championship a formality but Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat has flattened the atmosphere around Celtic Park.

The return leg in Turin looks to be a lost cause but Ambrose hasn’t totally given up on turning the tie around.

“I still believe we can qualify because nothing is impossible in football,” he claimed. “So many great comebacks have been recorded in the Champions League. We have learned from our mistakes.

“If we can score a vital early goal, it would give us a lot of confidence to even score more. We are used to playing in intimidating stadiums. We played in Barcelona and in Moscow and we gave a good account of ourselves.

“We now have a lot of time to prepare for the second leg. Everybody should remain positive.”

I remember him, if it is the same guy and I’m pretty sure it is given what you have posted, being interviewed on a Sunday night last year on Talksport and they shut him up as much as they could.

He was wanting to talk about the Sky team but they closed the interview as quick as possible at that point.

  6. The modern footballer…

Birmingham City manager Lee Clark has dropped Nikola Zigic from his squad following a lack of effort by the striker in training.

Clark, 40, said the Serbian had originally been told he was starting Saturday’s game against Watford.

“I’ve finished training absolutely disgusted. I can’t just sit and take that, the fans need to know,” he said.

“They pay his wages and what he dished up is the worst effort I’ve seen in 25 years of professional football.”

Clark continued: “The absolute minimum is to give everything every single day.

“Is it because he hasn’t been starting? Is that what you do? Down tools and stop trying? The football club deserves more, the fans deserve more.”

The ex-Huddersfield manager has not started Zigic, 32, since he scored and was later sent off in the defeat by Bolton in December.

Clark will again go with his young group of forwards against Watford as top-scorer Marlon King misses the game with injury.

“I’m an honest man and, whatever the result [on Saturday], I know I’ve done the right thing and I’ll sleep soundly,” Clark added.

“Nikola’s future is up to him. There’s been no shouting match or bust-up, it’s all up to him.”

  9. TET I think we have to look at the wider picture.

I think we should be careful about the terminology used on here as it is becoming a bit racist: cheating Italians, conniving Spaniards. What about cheating opponents and conniving officials. We have Italian fans and are admired by many in Spain. I’m sure it must irk them to see their nationality used in such negative terms.

  16. A priori, it was a strange choice of a Spanish ref. The Real Madrid v Man U match had a German referee. Mallenco is a fairly young referee but is compliant with the status quo. ie Juventus are recent big players in European football. That is one major trait of spanish referees, they play a percentage game.

What all this shows is that our pre-match strategy was flawed. Probably we shouldn’t have risked Ambrose. Izaguirre and Charlie both playing was not the best choice either. Forrest has not had a lot of games under his belt recently and is not back at his best yet. Lustig’s recent og for sweden may have affected his run up to the game and I thought Mathews was the more form player recently too. Only playing one recognised striker at home is also debatable, Miku had just, finally scored on the previous weekend and there was Watt and Lassad on the bench too. Too many Indians and not enough Chiefs when it came to converting build up play.

I think we also lost the game which is played out in the media beforehand. Jock Stein was a master at setting the atmosphere for these big games and he rarely tried to poke fun at opponents. As you say Paul, Juventus were very thorough in their pre match build up and their mentioning of Murray Park was masterful. We know the history with the Beast Souness, trying the same mind games a few years back but I was surprised to hear Kris Commons fall for it hook, line and sinker with his jibe about them wanting to train at a third division club. We took our eye off the ball as we plunged back into the Glasgow goldfish bowl and departed the european stage. 1-0 to Juventus. Not blaming Kris really as it must be difficult not to have a jibe at them as there is so much to laugh at!! Nevertheless that is for the ghuys and ghals to snigger at in the offices and pubs, not our professionals.

    Imagine Kris had said instead……………….

” I’m not surprised that Juventus are looking to find good training facilities in the city, they

are a thoroughly professional club and will want to get used to their surroundings. Players

like Pirlo have always been an inspiration for me and he was always one of my role

    models as a professional…..”

Alex Ferguson was doing it the other night, talking Ronaldo up after the game .”

Only player in the world who could have scored a goal like that, maybe Messi as well, bla bla bla .”

However, deep down, he probably feels Wellbeck’s goal, getting away from his marker, who is a Spanish internationalist , in the box, twisting his neck and powering a header into the net was in fact more brilliant than Ronaldo’s unmarked goal, not taking any credit away from CR either.

You’re right Paul, every day is a school day. We have to keep learning…and practising penalties!!
