Referee work to be done. External consultants, if you don’t have the stomach

169

It’s safe to say that Willie Collum’s work to raise the standards of Scottish refereeing goes on.  On Saturday, after Reo Hatate was barged to the ground inside the Ross County box, Alistair Johnston was penalised for a similar (but less significant) event, which resulted in County’s penalty and goal.

It was a mercy that Alistair was not red carded for the incident, although the apparent failure to follow the Rules of the Game indicates that the VAR and referee were aware they were on shaky ground with the penalty award.

Celtic’s late penalty, when Yang was tackled above the knee by County’s James Brown, who made no contact with the ball, was of the stone wall variety, yet was missed by the referee and took two minutes of video analysis before a consensus was reached.  Again, a red card could have been shown, but by this stage the referee must have been wanting to drift away quietly.

The appointment of external consultants across the city to advise the board what they should be doing is quite a thing.  The Newco board know what to do, just as you and I know: run the club on a sustainable basis.  All other improvements (the manager, recruitment, etc.) are merely window dressing.

Why spend on external consultants to be told what you already know?  Running on a sustainable basis when you habitually run at a loss will mean painful budget cuts.  My guess is that the Newco board do not have the stomach to tell their fans what’s in store, and would prefer an independent report to lay it out, with a measure of what consequences lie in store if they don’t.  It looks weak.

Can we also agree that it was probably a good thing that Newco beat St Johnstone yesterday?  More points dropped would surely have seen Clement sacked, which would release some of the tension around the club.  All that tension will do nothing to soften the message, when the consultants’ report drops.

As for a supporters’ association and ultras group campaigning to get their manager sacked, have you ever seen anything as stupid and destructive?  Demanding a manager is sacked is now a normal part of the ‘Rangers supporting experience’.  It certainly happens oftener than trophy wins.

There is a learning opportunity for us in this.  We will inevitably lose trophies and maybe a league in the future.  The team will go through peaks and troughs and we will have poor managers, but demanding blood like this is toxic.  You become a basket case that no manager with any proper choices would touch.  We had a dose of this the night Ross County knocked us out of the League Cup in 2020.  Mob rule makes it almost impossible to attract talent.

Football fans need to be able to accept losing with dignity.  If they cannot do this, they should find another pastime.

I agree about the Celtic ticket prices being too high. In the EPL West Ham have got rid of concession season tickets for pensioners, fans of Liverpool and Everton are protesting about high ticket prices forcing out trading fans,

Tottenham fans turning their back on the game; Fulham’s crowd showing yellow cards; Liverpool’s Kop removing their iconic flag displays and Wolves fans calling for boycotts – supporters have been protesting at Premier League ticket prices in their thousands this season.

The club has the most expensive non-corporate season ticket in the league. At £3,000, those who sit in certain areas of the new Riverside Stand pay more than £150 per home league match.

With its west London location on the banks of the Thames, Fulham has become one of the most popular destinations for global fans looking to see Premier League football during a trip to the capital.

Thanks for the nod towards Kelvingrove Museum – great place, enjoyed the visit!!!

it is good, what did you like ?

  6. Whilst our rivals are tearing themselves apart we could be entering the best time of our Celtic history in the past 50 years.

50 years where we have had plenty to cheer as well.

We could qualify in top 8 for last 16 or possibly just the 24. Either way it would be pretty good. We could be building and signing a couple to ensure we are well placed for next season and the play off in July.

We are on the verge of a double and possibly even another treble. Our 6th in 9 seasons. Following 1 in 41.

    Great Celtic times.

My favourite ever Celtic shirt. I remember Father McShane convinced Celtic to lend the shirt to my brother’s 5-a-side football team and there was a near riot when they played with it in Rothesay’s Pavilion!

  9. Put Brendan in charge of Dundee the morra night and Tony Doc in charge of Celtic.

    What would the score be?

Prediction – Lyle Cameron would be the best player on the pitch, but with Tony Doc’s Celtic winning by a Luke McCowan goal to nil.

When it gets boring imagination takes over.

  10. CELTIC MAC re: Full Moon tonight

Thanks for that reminder! Sold my big telescope to a school teacher and sometimes forget about these events now.

  11. Tough game for the MN Vikings tonight in Arizona in the final Wild Card game. Will need to travel to another away game at the Eagles in Philly if we win tonight Need to do it the hard way despite winning a record14 games this season. Hopefully Justin Jefferson can show why he’s rated the best receiver in the league. Go Vikings.

Thoughts go out to all those affected by the horrific fires in LA.

The lovely and utterly unmissable Deborah Tavares is featured in this video. Every prediction from DT 25 years ago is now in full swing, especially the micro dust being sprayed out of EVERY aeroplane in the sky, apart from in good guy countries like, Russia, China, and their BRICS allies, who don’t want their peoples all genocided.

And, 3 years ago President Putin said that:

[ “All Christians in Western countries will be persecuted like the Jews were in the 2nd World War, so Russia has already begun preparation’s to bring Western Christians to Russia were they can live, love, and work, in peace.” ]

What will Timmy do? Be a daft arse as usual? lol

    Game day.

    They’re coming thick and fast.

    Can’t wait

  15. Good Morning Celts…

    Interesting lead…

Due to a lack R2ngers obsession, my interest in “our rivals!?” has bein’ changing – back in the “old firm”, days Scottish Football was very different.

You could look at three eras…

    Post War to late Eighties

    Late Eighties to Y2K

    Y2K until Rangers died.

Scottish Football was competitive in the modern sense of the game Post War until late Eighties.

The great Hibs side of the fifties, Jock Stein’s Celtic, the eighties “New Firm”…. that kinda thing…

From the late eighties to Rangers “blew up on the toilet” in 2012 – it was about the old firm teams and Scottish football was going to rack and ruin.

The debris that we have had since 2012 has been a challenge for Celtic as domestic football has been relatively meaningless.

Of course, there was opportunities for; the Hibs, the Hearts and the old new firm, to reassert themselves – what a waste of time and money that was.

What is your Football Club’s model under such circumstances!? What is your Football Club’s business model under such circumstances!?

    Really tough challenges for Celtic.*

The only time the new, old firm were relevant, was when we were treading water under Ronny Delia**, or blasé under Lenny Mk2***

Of course, as the new, old firm became relevant, Celtic’s prowess in Europe, fell through the floor.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place…

That’s why Celtic must not make any footballing or business decision with regard to what Scottish Clubs are(not) doing – we simply must dance our own dance.

That’s why my interest in our rivals have changed, now any SPL Club showing real ambition, real purpose and business reality is something to look forward to – they get it right, they strive to be their all round best, they will get significant rewards.

We may, under those circumstances, have a worthy domestic rival, relatively speaking of course, but for now, we must leave them to it.

Until such times, they realise how good it is when you stop banging your head off a brickwall, our true rivals are our European peers.

    * Of course, personally I’ve always thought Celtic striving to best the best possible football team, would bring us focus, football success, business success

**R2ngers won their first Scottish Cup

*** R2ngers won their first League Championship

    Relentless football continues today…

    Dundee 0 – 4 Celtic

    Well, kinda…

Woke up early but decided to have a lazy morning, due to being knackered:)))

    Must do better…

If you wouldn’t mind popping into a few hostelries in old Glasgow town, to ensure everything is A – OK like, I’d appreciate it;))

    Hail Hail

  17. Looking forward to the game tonight. It will be tough! Anyway, enjoying the positivity on the blog. If you can’t enjoy these times as a Celtic supporter, then there is something very sad in your life.

    Never take it for granted.
