It’s safe to say that Willie Collum’s work to raise the standards of Scottish refereeing goes on. On Saturday, after Reo Hatate was barged to the ground inside the Ross County box, Alistair Johnston was penalised for a similar (but less significant) event, which resulted in County’s penalty and goal.
It was a mercy that Alistair was not red carded for the incident, although the apparent failure to follow the Rules of the Game indicates that the VAR and referee were aware they were on shaky ground with the penalty award.
Celtic’s late penalty, when Yang was tackled above the knee by County’s James Brown, who made no contact with the ball, was of the stone wall variety, yet was missed by the referee and took two minutes of video analysis before a consensus was reached. Again, a red card could have been shown, but by this stage the referee must have been wanting to drift away quietly.
The appointment of external consultants across the city to advise the board what they should be doing is quite a thing. The Newco board know what to do, just as you and I know: run the club on a sustainable basis. All other improvements (the manager, recruitment, etc.) are merely window dressing.
Why spend on external consultants to be told what you already know? Running on a sustainable basis when you habitually run at a loss will mean painful budget cuts. My guess is that the Newco board do not have the stomach to tell their fans what’s in store, and would prefer an independent report to lay it out, with a measure of what consequences lie in store if they don’t. It looks weak.
Can we also agree that it was probably a good thing that Newco beat St Johnstone yesterday? More points dropped would surely have seen Clement sacked, which would release some of the tension around the club. All that tension will do nothing to soften the message, when the consultants’ report drops.
As for a supporters’ association and ultras group campaigning to get their manager sacked, have you ever seen anything as stupid and destructive? Demanding a manager is sacked is now a normal part of the ‘Rangers supporting experience’. It certainly happens oftener than trophy wins.
There is a learning opportunity for us in this. We will inevitably lose trophies and maybe a league in the future. The team will go through peaks and troughs and we will have poor managers, but demanding blood like this is toxic. You become a basket case that no manager with any proper choices would touch. We had a dose of this the night Ross County knocked us out of the League Cup in 2020. Mob rule makes it almost impossible to attract talent.
Football fans need to be able to accept losing with dignity. If they cannot do this, they should find another pastime.

He also warned the Hoops’ star: “Alistair Johnston is starting to make a name for himself with the dark arts that he is getting away with. I think now that people like us are talking about it will be highlighted a bit more, not that you go out to target a player but I think it’s become more obvious that this is part of the game that he plays.”
BR or club should be calling this tripe out.
DR have reported this from a “former referee” in the context of a whinging piece about the AJ penalty (and him not seeing red).
I’m waiting on the piece on the Hatate non-penalty btw.
11 o clock ,the game for me tonight. Its a helluva wait.

Good matchday morning to all Celts across the Globe and Govanhill from a rather mild Springburn (work).
Just win tonight Celtic any win will do, although I will go with my obligatory 1 – 3 to the Tic.
Thank goodness after 2 courses of anti biotics I am beginning to get back to normal.

Pirie talking shite again, AJ admitted he was caught on the wrong side and conceded it was a penalty, no underhand dealings on dark arts, just pure pish from the DR and unnamed ex official 🙄

I don’t agree with the idea that Johnston or Brown should have seen red.
The rules on ‘denying a goal scoring opp’ say that is you made an attempt for the ball or to challenge the opponent to get to the ball first in the area , you get a yellow.
As Johnston tried to get to the ball by shouldering , that is an legal attempt. He got it wrong , hence a penalty and should have had a yellow.
Brown also tried desperately to get the ball/challenge for control of it but took the man. penalty and yellow
The lack of yellow for Johnston was the only mistake; UNLESS the ref didn’t see it as a clear opportunity. Possibly the way the attacker collapsed showed that he was never getting to the ball; hence a foul, penalty, no obvious denial, no yellow.
If you distill all the scenarios on ‘ denying goal’ , it is there for a cynical professional foul.
The Follow Follow argument is that Johnston made no attempt at the ball or to win the space legally i.e. cynically pushed the player over. I’m not having that at all
Here’s the rules so you can all disagree with me 😎
Where a player commits an offence against an opponent within their own penalty area which denies an opponent an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and the referee awards a penalty kick, the offender is cautioned if the offence was an attempt to play the ball or a challenge for the ball; in all other circumstances (e.g. holding, pulling, pushing, no possibility to play the ball etc.), the offending player must be sent off.

Still giving oxygen to these cvnts. A dying breed.
I fully agree with the end of the article. There is a way to win and to lose and they should be very similar.
In recent years certain Celts (Scott Brown is one) and many fans have lacked class when we’ve won, preferring to taunt others. That’s never for me.
We should enjoy our glories, our position as the dominant club and we should hold those who run our club to a high standard, in terms of expectations. It’s fair to say some within the boardroom would be happy to solely win in Scotland and not show much ambition. However our current manager is ambitious and is hopefully keeping that side of things always present in the thinking.
A new manager in the future may be more grateful to be in the position and not challenge the board as much. We have been there before.
We will see adversity again but it would be nice if we could see continued ambition aimed at getting some respect back in Europe. Our league is laughed at by many, and so Europe must always be the main aim.

Absolutely spot on. Hopefully lessons have been learned from 2018, 2019 and 2023, although I’m not sure I would be betting my entire savings on it!
I was very pissed off at the article by those two ex ref clowns more or less calling AJ a cheat. Someone mentioned earlier that the club should take those and that rag to the cleaners. I wish they would. that is a slight on a young man’s name and career. If ex refs want to use the words dark arts then let them cast the first stone at their own organizations workings.
Cmon the hoops tonight, tough game ahead.

Not very often the Record gets anything right, but the team that they envisage, could turn out for us in the play offs,is pretty mouthwatering.

The pot calling the kettle black so that is. I wonder if they are still hurting at his “dark arts” in handling a ball out of play despite the offside decision. Poor hurting huns.

Not seen much of Chukemweka but Jota is supposedly going to Greece (Olympiakos?) for a short term loan; I’d try him out in a BR team in a heartbeat and KT if he can stay fit (or even be managed for the bigger games) is a no brainer.

TANGBHOY @ 1:23 PM,
Yes, the only way for our Club to have any standing in the game, is what we can achieve from a European perspective.
GLASSTWOTHIRDSFULL @ 1:29 PM,

Yes, the evidence is now there, so the lessons do need to learned and heeded – I believe they have been.
Obviously there is corporate politics and powerplays that means they’re agendas followed.
My feeling is those with the divide and rule vibe are not ruling nor dividing – just disappointing they are still flogging the dead-horse.
BOONDOCK SAINT @ 1:46 PM,
Spot-on, it’s a disgrace…
Far from casting stones in their organisations’ workings – it is those very organisations that have got them casting the stones at our Club and our players.

I’ve thought for a long time that we should copy the deid team’s withdrawing cooperation with the SMSM when they allege utter nonsense about the team or individual players, like they are targeting young Johnson at he moment. They need us more than we need them. Th3 deid team had BBC Scotland make an abject apology a year or 2 ago, when they had a story right, never mind wrong.

scott brown perenial winning captain, do you mean that guy ?
See Borussia Dortmund have put in a bid for Arsenal left back Zinchenko, who hasnt had much game time, and I wonder if that goes through Arteta might be more inclined to keep KT to the end of the season as a squad player.

We are a Scottish club, representing Scotland,
Let the bestest marketed, most overhyped league laugh, its what the rest of Europe are doing at the epl as they suck in players in overpriced transfer fees but win zilch in Uefas 3 tournaments.
Tho do keep an eye on the expansion and growth of the Champions League league structure, regular attendancce there shall enable a restructuring of our clubs path as more games in CL leads to more games there
A move to epl is as deid as rangers2012.

Againt ross county wee hatate is played through on right of box about 12 yards out, he opens his body and can get a left footed shot away. the closest player between himself and the goal, hooks in to hatates left arm and drags body so that he is completely off balance and can’t get shot off, there was no attempt to play ball, hatate now off balance tries to regain balance but back of his foot is clipped by same player, again no possible way or attempt to get ball at all, hatate now completely off balance scuffs shot. He was denied goal scoring opportunity by defender who makes no attempt for ball, no penality, no sending off, no media attention.
But we are now told that a full back who is caught wrong side is no longer allowed to challenge for the ball or space where ball is going, he needs to just let the player go ahead unchallenged, a player who is also not in control of the ball. Are people unhinged ffs.
Good evening all from the Victoria Bar. Got my usual seat in the directors box, canapés, hors d’ouevres and Guinness getting battered. My companions are being sensible and are only slightly pished. Should be fun at 8. 😂
I know I shouldn’t be but I am still annoyed at a fine young Professional in AJ being called a cheat. When teams/players constantly time waste at Celtic Park and no one mentions it in the papers or refs take an eternity to book someone for timewasting, then that is a whole team that has been practised in the dark arts. They are also cheating the paying customers who pay good money to come and watch 90 minutes of football. Even up in Dingwall last week I noticed that the ball boys were not even getting the ball for our players, and I know that happens at many grounds these days when we are playing. They are told to try and slow down our momentum any way they can. Alistair Johnston is a hard working, hard as nails and fair player. He makes one mistake and he is tarred with ” dark arts.” I sure hope that our club is doing something about this.
Sorry to be repetitive my friends.
