Referring to a team no longer with us

753

Let’s be clear, you cannot punish a player on the basis that he has made a comment which is only offensive, offence is subjective, highly so in Scottish football, where thousands await the opportunity.

Nor can you punish a player for a derogatory remark which may offend, especially if the remark does not call into question the probity of the subject.  “Hearts are rotten, we beat them easily twice this season”, is a derogatory remark and will offend some Hearts fans, but it also falls into the category of being a fair opinion.

And without pointing out the obvious, you cannot offend the dead.  John Guidetti and the club are right to contest this ridiculous charge, which by context, clearly refers to a team no longer with us.

I was absolutely astonished to read that newco (and former oldco) director, Paul Murray, explained Dave King’s absence from newco’s recent share as he is waiting until the SFA “have completed their review of Dave’s status before he can fully participate in the future of the Club”.

The SFA have no issue whatsoever in Dave King investing heavily in newco, or in owning all shares.  Indeed, King is already the largest shareholder, which has attracted no attention from the football authorities.

The prospect of King sloping off if the SFA judge him not Fit and Proper (which I think they will), is a fabulous twist in the work of this legendary non-executive director of a dead club.  He sat on the oldco board which paid EBTs for so many years, he stayed while they made no provision for the HMRC tax case, plunging into the transfer market instead.  Now he awaits the whim of the SFA before deciding to invest, having led newco away from their primary source of funding.

What a star.

Can’t help but think that whoever complained about Guidetti, or made the decision to charge him, is being naive, and hadn’t thought through the laws of unintended consequences.

Cacophony consists of harsh sounds. If a writer reads a book aloud with the sounds “Hello” “Hello” mimicking someone walking in slip-ons, it is an example of cacophony.

    The question is, said Alice,

The question is, said Humpty Dumpty, ‘which is to be master – that’s all’

  9. “No one likes us, we don’t care”

So is that another lie then? Or is it offensive to point out that huns are liars? Is it offensive to liars to equate them with huns?

I’m off to get legal advice.

“A permarage of huns” has a certain ring to it.

    “A big house of huns”.

“A glass house of huns” is probably a bit far-fetched, but they shouldn’t be throwing stones in the first place.

    Hey blue eyes.

It seems odd that in the last two weeks or thereabouts, there has been a significant increase in the number of “bad news” stories surrounding Celtic.

The hi-jacking of our new strip deal Press Conference by a plant “journalist” , who with one unexpected question managed to garner major coverage of Celtic’s reluctance to deal with extremist Irish Republicanism within it’s support, was as sinister as it was unwelcome.

We have then had the extraordinary amount of column inches given to the perceived injustices in the 4 game series against Dundee Utd, with McNamara, Donnelly, Paton and McGowan all being cast as victims of an all powerful/influential Celtic, when in fact, anyone who took time to watch the games would have seen that Utd benefited from some amazing generosity in the series. Not one single journalist flagged this up.

Then we had the Scott Brown debacle.

No-one that I know is really defending Brown’s stupidity, but the press campaign to smear his reputation, to the extent of trying to have the Captaincy removed and asking for him to be dropped for the League Cup Final truly jumped the shark.

Meanwhile, at every Ronny Deila Press Conference, repeated questions are asked of his regime change and fitness demands, culminating in one nameless female asking if Ronny thought “players in other teams are fat”.

In amongst all this, Celtic’s own publicity magnet , John Guidetti goes in a huff, doesn’t celebrate a goal, and gets accused of Sectarianism for using the word “hun”, all of which attract major press attention.

Last night on tv, BBC Sport , rather than show any highlights of the weekend’s games, they chose to mention the UEFA Fines for the team and the fans at Milan.

During this period , we have put ourselves in a very strong position to win the Treble with some amazing performances against Dundee Utd, and have seen our fickle fans coming out in significantly greater numbers in support of our new Manager.

Celtic are shampoo at handling the Press. They seem to accept that it’s “our turn” , when in fact it’s seldom anything other than “our turn”.

The significance of the increase in anti-Celtic stories of the last two weeks is far from coincidental.

So what if anything should we do about it?

I would like to see us take a much harder line with the Press. It’s not as if we would suffer as a Club from any negativity it might bring. It can’t possibly get any worse without becoming libellous.

We don’t want to manipulate them ( or even control them) as others seem so eager to do. We certainly don’t want unwarranted good news created by fawning PR lickspittles deflecting from what’s really going on, but it would be nice to have someone at Celtic who stood up to the Press and said ” enough”.

As the clamour for the return of Sevco gains momentum, we need to stand up for ourselves more than ever.

(no tin foil was worn during the making of this post)

  18. I cannot understand where the “offence” lies.

John Guidetti was using reported speech. He was quoting what people sing about him. If that was offensive then it was equally offensive for the TV channel to transmit the “offensive” comment.

Is it offensive to refer to a football club as a Dark Ages Eastern European tribe who were renowned, among other things, for their artistry and metalwork? This would be comparable with referring to a group as “Vikings”.

What about referring to another football club as “Arabs”?

The term is not racist since it refers to a football club rather than an ethnic group.

Perhaps the “offence” is he did not buy into the fiction that the club in question did not in fact die.

  19. So are we still allowed to use the hun word -))))

Rivalry in football is everywhere with some supporters calling their city rivals a lot worse.

I give you the Istanbul derby where Galatasaray V Fenerbahçe is hate filled with the majority of Galatasaray support being Kurds.(deaths in the city nearly every time these 2 mobs meet btw)

I give you the Sofia derby where one club is supported by Gypsy’s and the games are very heated.

Have a look at the Derby’s in Romania same thing applies there.

  20. I will stop calling them Huns when they stop calling me a Fenian B@stard! Fairly straight forward.
