Refreshed looking Hatate back in control

241

There was plenty to fret about in the first half.  Celtic’s passing was hesitant and unable to prize a solid Motherwell shape open.  It wasn’t until Yang competed for a loose ball which never should have been his in stoppage time before the break, that the game changed.  Motherwell keeper, Oxborough, tried to make the ball his, but only succeeded in clattering into Yang.  Arne Engels scored with the resultant penalty kick.

Nothing worked for Daizen Maeda in the first period, but when Liam Scales got a near-post flick on a corner early in the second, Daizen was all alone to head into the empty net.

A refreshed-looking Reo Hatate came on just after the hour, along with Kyogo and Nicolas Kuhn.  All three improved Celtic, as the game decisively slipped away from Motherwell.  Kuhn, on his return from injury, and Hatate, scored late on to emphasis Celtic’s strength in depth.

With the two teams below them both losing, Celtic’s lead at the top of the table stretched to 12 points.  The title race is certainly not over after only 17 games, but this Celtic team have a formidable look about them.

  1. Davie Wilson put Rangers ahead after 90 seconds and it stayed that way until HT. Big Yogi tore the Rangers full backs to shreds. They switched wings and so did The Bear. He absolutely terrorised both of them. Davie Provan was one of them but I can’t remember the name of the other. 5-1 at the end. My first Glasgow Derby aged 14. Went with my big brother, his pal and my pal.

I’ve been many times before, I’ve been a member with my spurs-supporting son for years and we’ve made use of the ticket exchange a fair bit. The tickets are few and far between on the exchange these days, it was easier a couple of seasons ago when Conte had them playing terrible football. My wife’s cousin says most people prefer the results being worse and them playing more exciting football, but I guess thats because they never win anyway.

If you’ve got mobility problems like me they shuttle busses they lay on for free are excellent, getting to the ground otherwise isn’t much different than to Celtic Park, the traffic around the ground is always bad anyway, Tottenham is bad area for traffic. The ground is great the atmosphere is fantastic, you can get a nice pint brewed on site quite easily before the game, its all a bit expensive but its just as you’d expect and everything is very shiny and new still.

Its not nearly as impressive as some of the grounds I’ve been to following Celtic, but thats probably more to do with the history of the stadium than anything else. It’s a bit soulless but it’s new and very modern so its no surprise really. I dont think you’d be blown away by it if you were an away fan.

Really though, as much as its an impressive ground its the football that makes the experience and seeing how good Liverpool were would stay with you much more than the ground. And in terms of enjoyment it was always much more fun watching Arsenal and Spurs winning in their old grounds than struggling a bit in the new ones.

As far as the caller on 909 goes, Spurs fans are champion moaners. Probably with some justification but they’d probably admit they do enjoy it.

Wee Daizen. He has scored against the hun at Paradise, Hampden and their hovel. Tam McLaughlin, Big Jimmy, there’s a bet for Thursday.

Oops, fook that just win tomorrow the Celtic.

Watched that game from the Celtic end as a 15 year old . The most memorable game I’ve ever been at , even including the Leeds game at Hampden .

  6. My da took me to the January 66 game aged 10 for my first Glasgow Derby.

I’ll never forget the atmosphere, somehow enhanced by the fog. As we ran riot in the second half, two memories stay vivid. The Celtic end ( I was in the main stand) could only be heard celebrating but not seen. In the mist….and the hurting huns launching screwtaps at us from the front enclosure.

    Fantastic memory.

Even after the scoreboard was removed, the programme still had the A, B, C etc .

I can clearly remember the announcer reading out the half time scores and saying “A 1-2 , B 0-0 etc” rather than just reading out the teams and scores.

However I can also remember the announcement of the final score at Berwick being announced during our game against Arbroath. Berwick ko was early as they had no floodlights.

  8. BOURNESOUPRECIPE,

Remember the old halftime scoreboard well. My Uncle Eddie and his mates used to stand near it. They worked in the Strawhoose at Parkhead Cross and the pub was shut in the afternoon. So, they watched from there and left (I think) about 4.40 to open the pub at 5 o’clock.

As regards the 5-1 game. It was played in fog and I couldn’t see the rangers end. All the goals, including theirs, was scored at the Celtic end. We had the beginnings of our best team ever.

  9. celtic need to get the best team it can on the park every week and keep winning as much as possible in Scotland. At same time celtic need to make steady progress in European football to position itself well for the future.

Improvements to lennoxtown are good and upgrading barrowfield training centre is most welcome. A grandstand of say 1000 would be nice down there as well.

In my opinion, celtic also need to find a way to increase capacity, perhaps 70k, needs more corporate hospitaility capacity, needs more capacity regards bars, cafes, restaurants and food outlets, fanzone (indoor, if council are being cunts), a large museum (look at irish disporia, formation of celtic in a hostile cultural backdrop and continued position in the wider community ( open to all) as well as the successes of the team), a superstore and a hotel etc. They need to improve toileting facilities as well. The front of the staduim should be the benchmark for the rest of the stadium envios (large paved padestrian area with statues, street furnisher etc. In and around said area). Celtic need better car parking capacity and better public transport links (shuttle buses).

That is a whole lot of improvements that are possible and pluasable that would be transformative in terms of the impact on accelerating our club into the 21st century.

  10. As they do, Jim Forrest and George McLean were chased after Berwick. Both were good goalscorers but they wanted sacrificial blood. An act of hun folly exposed by having to play CH Rodger Hynd in the cup winners cup final 4 months later, costing them a European trophy. Hynd missed an open goal against Bayern in Nuremburg.

This also weakened new manager Davie White’s hand when Scott Simon was hunted; definitely due to Jock Stein’s success. Two years later White is next for the bullet, while joint top of the league, after a roasting at home from Lubanski and Gornik .

It all stems from one day in Berwick. Rangers were a top side at that time albeit short of Stein’s Celtic.

As is their way, the dour thrawn staunch Presbyterian attitude of intolerance and unforgiving cut their own noses off.

I still see that to thiis day .

  11. Tiny Wharton, by the bye, grew up about 150 yards from Celtic Park. He used to play with my Dad and John Cairney. He was useless, I was told, but he as the only one whose family could afford a proper ball. My Dad used to tell me that his mother would call him up for his tea and was told to leave the ball with the other lads to play with. That was in Williamson Street, which still half exists.

  12. Steph boy I agree with your comments regarding upgrades inside and outside Celtic Park, but will it happen.

  13. garygillespieshamstring on

    Blakey

Yes. Hun chairman John Lawrence said that Hynd’ cost him a knighthood because he was unable to kick the ball into an empty net from a yard out.

Not that he was a man to hold a grudge. :)

  14. GG.

You could actually say that the huns of late 60s were unlucky that Stein walked into Celtic Park in 65.

They were probably a top 10 European team then…..but couldn’t handle being second to us, and therefore imploded trying to live with it.

I would enjoy a pub in Celtic Park that didn’t entail a match ticket. Me and Prestonpans and his brother were meeting in the Oak. Dearie me. I go to mecca bingo on Duke Street for a quick pint, Mrs BRRB waves me off, and I usually return with a sunny disposition. I will repeat that journey tomorrow. Pished again and 15 points clear.🤣🤣

Scottish football was very decent then.

At the end of 66-67, Clyde were third in the league behind the hun.

Aberdeen went into the cup winners cup as runners up to Celtic in the Scottish cup.

The hun qualified for the inter Cities Fairs Cup as runners up to Celtic in the league.

The rules of the fairs cup at the time stated that only one team per city could vompete, so Clyde couldn’t get in.

Dundee, Hibs and the hun had good results in the fairs cup and the following year, Kilmarnock and Dunfermline also had decent results.

Decent strength in depth in the old First Dividion in the mid-late 60s.

  17. Not in the know, apparently they have spent a money up at lennoxtown.

I would hope celtic are looking at doing improvements round and in stadium. The spend at barrowfield and lennoxtown shows they are willing to invest in infustructure work.

Also a 0-0 v Aberdeen and a 2-3 v Dundee United at Celtic Park in two consecutive league games that postponed the clinching of the league till we went to Ipox.

  19. Got £10 bet on today.Motherwell,8/1.Turkish mate on as well.Hate asking him to put a bet on.He always backs it as well.

    The Strawhoose brings back memories.

We covered the Rainjurz end not long after we won the big cup. It was always foggy every winter in Glasgow, I remember a game in the 70’s that was abandoned when the fog came down when we were 0-2 verse Hibs. That’ll give some idea of how bad visibility was, think we won the replayed game.
