Regional League concept gets an airing

257

Interested to read that “issues, such as the Regional League concept” were discussed at the 29 club European Club Association meeting, held at Celtic Park yesterday.  12 of the 13 nations present would all benefit from the regionalisation of their leagues, while Wales (and England) already participates in a regional league.

We’ve seen a few campaigns similar to this – with the objective of delivering Celtic out of the confines of Scottish football, but this approach is different.  It seeks to build an alliance with similarly disenfranchised clubs across the continent.  The Austrians, Czechs and Slovaks would benefit from playing in Germany, the Scandinavians would benefit by grouping together, while the former Yugoslavian teams have long acknowledged the merits of resurrecting a Yugoslav-regional league.

I was a wee bit surprised that the “Regional League concept” discussions were acknowledged.  I heard they’ve been on-going for some time but no one wanted to discuss in the public domain.  This will have been a considered comment, designed to move the debate beyond those present at the meeting.

Many thanks for the tremendous response to our auction appeal to build a fourth school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  The kitchen will be at Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which has 909 children enrolled.  Will bring you more details when I have them.

The auction is for two debenture hospitality seats at the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Club sponsor, Magners.  It closes Friday morning, so keep an eye on it here.

Linda Croker has asked me to pass on her sincere thanks for all the support received for Sean’s Trust and the memory of St John Doyle from the CQN community. I know the last year has been enormously difficult for the family but your many small gestures have meant a lot.

A good summary and you’ve pretty much summed up my own views on this. A home match against them is almost certain to sell out regardless of any extra publicity. If there’s any official suggestion that this is a ‘return’ to a bygone fixture I will not take up my seat. That should not be interpreted as being a feartie or afraid of the outcome.

    Naw,it’s no’!

It’s simply a way of helping those less fortunate than others. A way,if you like,of saying ‘There but for the Grace of God..’

A way,in fact,of reminding us of our original ethos. To help the poor.

Equality of reward-communism-is a great idea. Shame it has been shown time and again that it doesn’t work, which is why the system we have, however flawed, is the best available.

    ==============================================

Can you explain why you believe that it doesn’t work.

Just because greed wins the day, and rich powerful men convince the weak willed like yourself that “it doesn’t work”, doesn’t mean you can convince the rest of us.

I slightly doubt the figure mention but that isn’t my main beef.

Celtic look set to lose out as he’s free to talk to clubs in January…

Which means he’s free to talk to us also.

Two articles I read have NOT ONE QUOTE from man City.

    It’s a shit stirring exercise.

  10. Surely if you stay away from any Sevco game, against Celtic, you give credence to it being the same club? por cierto

According to that tribune of values and virtue, the Daily Record… Man City would like Celtic to pay them £5m if they can agree terms with John Guidetti on a permanent transfer.

John can leave Man City for hee haw in July. Celtic have him until the end of the season. I cant see Peter taking the spare cash out of the old earmarked reserves to pay Man City anything.

The only people Celtic will talk to are John Guidetti and his agent.

PL John. Do you want to stay?

JG. I have at least 3 other offers and I imagine they are above your budget given your wage structure

PL. we would give you a platform to go to a much better club and could make you our highest earner ( if he can punt Conmons and get Brown down )

JG. In getting offered over 35k a week. I like it here but …

PL we can go to 20k a week but that’s it.

JG. Ill get back to you in January

Good luck to the Bhoys tonight. Should we qualify for one of them am I right to think the semi-finals early next year will be at Hampden?

I am surprised that you are advancing the “fearties” line again.

You tried to attach this to my post a while back when I echoed precisely the line used by Auldheid in his post this morning.

You replied then stating that you understood and accepted the clarification of the motivation but, here you are, again reducing it to the simplistic status of “feart”

What is your motivation here? Does it make simpler for you to deliberately misunderstand the line so that you can rail against it? Does it make you more comfortable in your vow to continue supporting and not accept this as a step too far?

If it is the latter, you need not bother. Posters are not calling you out for your individual decision. When I say that my self respect will not allow me to countenance an acquiescence to the Continuity Myth by my club, I fully understand and support the right of other Celtic supporters to think differently. This is my line in the sand and I do not imply that you are lacking in self-respect if you think differently. I know many Celtic supporters who have arrived at different positions on this, after much soul searching. Fair play to them.

Instead of starting a needless fight in an empty room, you should consider whether you do, indeed, “get” the point. It has been explained to you more than once and you seem not to want to grasp it.

    MWD

I understand that the tacit acceptance of the Ibrox club into our 4th tier league was a clandestine and probably corrupt machination by our football authorities. I respect the view of all posters who felt that mid-2012 was the time to take a response and I believe that view was well represented on here by heavyweights like kitalba, Awe Naw and Maggie McGill.

However, I chose not to take my final stand on it just yet, and I would argue that it was neither cowardice nor a failure to understand the significance of what had just happened that was at play. At the time the SPL acted responsibly (eventually) in not allowing the Ibrox club to continue in the top tier. The SFL, despite active lobbying, and I believe some prominent Scottish based politicians will have tried to influence this, refused to accept their parachuting into the 2nd tier of Scottish football, thanks to Turnbull Hutton and others. That they were accepted into the 4th tier of Scottish football, rather than Spartans or another team, may have been against existing rules and procedures but it was not as corrupt an outcome as was being planned. Allowing Sevco into Div. 3 was, in fact, not an issue that I was willing to go to the wall to protest against.

I never wanted the Ibrox fans to have no club to support.

I never wanted them to all walk away and take up following golf, rugby or bowls.

In fact, I think it would have been commercial suicide for Scottish Football to throw away 40,000 regular attendees and a casual following of a couple of hundred thousand worldwide followers of an Ibrox based club.

My issue was not and is not about them continuing to exist. I do not hate them that much.

My argument was, and remains, the terms under which they are allowed to continue to function.

For me, they must be a new club with no official history other than that earned since mid 2012. It is that simple, no more and no less and I see that as a line endorsed by quite a few on here.

The Ibrox club can continue, if it wishes, to represent the traditions of the dead club. It can wear the same strip, sing the same songs and have the same baggage it always had. I would not care or be scared if it did so. I would even go and see then play my team if they did so, as I have done in the past. I don’t even care if they believe or proclaim that they are a continuation of the old club and claim all their tainted titles.

My beef is not with them, it is with their old club and with the SFA and SPL handling of their death in 2012.

If the SFA and newly formed SPFL accredit them officially with a continued history AND my club, Celtic, plays along with this viewpoint without demur of any kind, then I am out of this game. It will have become, officially corrupt in my eyes by both these steps being taken.

Until then, I can afford myself the wiggle room to feel comfortable in my decision without major moral conflict. I can also accept that other Celtic supporters will thole this corruption out of love for the club and its traditions. I disagree with them but I understand and accept their position.

You may be feeling that they have already backed the Continuity Myth by failing to call it out. I have listened clearly to many of the utterances made and I have read the statements issued and nowhere, not once, have I heard an SFA, SPFL, UEFA or FIFA administrator state clearly and unambiguously that they are the same club with continuous history.

I am not accepting tacit endorsements of the myth as proof. I await the publication of their history by the SFA on its official site and in its submissions to UEFA and FIFA that RIFC has the historical record of the old dead club. At that stage, I will have nothing further to do with SFA events and competitions.

I also await, the presentation that my club, Celtic, makes about the first match we ever have to play against the new Ibrox team. If they proclaim the same myth, than I am finished with actively going to Celtic matches again. My decision only and not one I seek to impose on others and, because of that, it will be made on my terms.

I hope that I will not have to choose that road.

  16. Don’t like Hearts at all, they are as bad as the scum from Govan in my book, but, fair play to the club for introducing the “living wage”. Well done, time we did the same.

“Outside the Bigotted Together (c) coalition, no-one else believe their lies.”

I believe, implicitly, that prominent backers of the Yes campaign exerted pressure on the football bodies to ensure that there was no official death of the Ibrox institution announced in the run-up to the referendum. No proof but I believe it just as much as you attribute it to the other side.

Watched bits of the Rangers Internationl v St.Johnstone match last night and unfortunately arrived at the conclusion that RIFC would indeed give us a game at the moment which is most annoying and a slight on our board.

Not only that, but we are the only team left in the LC who are likely to prevent them winning the damn thing, so we better make sure of beating Thistle.

Any other top division team they have played in their present incarnation seems to lie down against them.
