Regional League concept gets an airing

257

Interested to read that “issues, such as the Regional League concept” were discussed at the 29 club European Club Association meeting, held at Celtic Park yesterday.  12 of the 13 nations present would all benefit from the regionalisation of their leagues, while Wales (and England) already participates in a regional league.

We’ve seen a few campaigns similar to this – with the objective of delivering Celtic out of the confines of Scottish football, but this approach is different.  It seeks to build an alliance with similarly disenfranchised clubs across the continent.  The Austrians, Czechs and Slovaks would benefit from playing in Germany, the Scandinavians would benefit by grouping together, while the former Yugoslavian teams have long acknowledged the merits of resurrecting a Yugoslav-regional league.

I was a wee bit surprised that the “Regional League concept” discussions were acknowledged.  I heard they’ve been on-going for some time but no one wanted to discuss in the public domain.  This will have been a considered comment, designed to move the debate beyond those present at the meeting.

Many thanks for the tremendous response to our auction appeal to build a fourth school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  The kitchen will be at Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which has 909 children enrolled.  Will bring you more details when I have them.

The auction is for two debenture hospitality seats at the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Club sponsor, Magners.  It closes Friday morning, so keep an eye on it here.

Linda Croker has asked me to pass on her sincere thanks for all the support received for Sean’s Trust and the memory of St John Doyle from the CQN community. I know the last year has been enormously difficult for the family but your many small gestures have meant a lot.

I wasn’t on CQN last night so not guilty. However I understand why others might vent their frustrations after last nights results.

Like it or not our future fortunes are tied to What ever happens at Ibrox as the team who play there are the only real domestic barrier to year on year entry to Europe.

The frustrations I feel personally are centred on the fact we have lying cheating Newco closing a gap that should really be an unbridgeable chasm.

The truth is RIFC could give our current team a game. That should never be the case after recent events.

Lawwell has failed to put miles of pure green water between Celtic and Newcomer.

We should be looking forward to humiliating any RIFC imposter team we meet in the near future. Instead most of us are honest enough to admit that is unlikely at present. Not because RIFC are good but because we are so poor. Lawwell has guided us to this point. Fact. He has taken a few too many gambles and still has hiked his fortune in the process. That fortune is paid for by Celtic fans. So I don’t blame any who come on to moan.

gone is the angst of that match versus them, the hatred, the bile, the sectrainism, and thats just the main stream media.

its a pleasure not to have that game and i bet the police and hospitals feel the same.

now , maybe there are some celtic supporters staying away now and hoping for a game against the tribute act , so they can get back to hating. its certainly not about competition.

others have maybe not been to that game in many years, and think they are missing something special having returned to these shores.

me, i hope we never face them, as much as i want to beat anyone, i do fearsomething , and that is the carnage and violence that will be dealt out to our supporters.

  5. Somehow doubt Manchester City have much chance with this one…

CELTIC face a £5million dilemma over on-loan striker John Guidetti.

Manchester City have slapped an amazing £5million price tag on the Swede who has scored five goals in seven games ahead of tonight’s League Cup quarter-final against Partick Thistle.

Guidetti, who agreed a season-long loan deal in the summer, is valued at £5million by the Etihad giants.

However, the 22-year-old marksman is also out of contract in June when Celtic could snap him up for free.

Ronny Deila has already intimated he would like to make his temporary deal permanent and could attempt to persuade the player to sign a pre-contract in January.

However, the SPFL champions have been told there is no chance of getting Guidetti on a cut-price fee.

The frontman knows he has no future with the English multi-million pound outfit, but they are still demanding a fee which would undoubtedly stretch the financial resources at Parkhead.

At £5million, he would be the biggest buy at the club since Gordon Strachan paid Hibs £4.4million for Scott Brown in 2007.

With his impressive goalscoring form, Guidetti is attracting other suitors who, of course, will also be able to talk to him from January 1.

Celtic could kill off the opposition by agreeing to City’s transfer demands.

Or they could take the risk of waiting it out until the summer and saving themselves a massive cash outlay.

Guidetti has already admitted he is enjoying life in Paradise and playing for the Hoops.

The £5million waiting game will kick off in two months’ time!

The ECA holding meetings at Celtic Park? Is that a wynd up? Was it not the ECA that helped give the huns a desperate same club argument? Now the ECA are inside our own boardroom talking about new leagues! I’m not one to get into the board debates but should I be joining the appeasedcsc?

The ECA has no credibility when they don’t understand the finer points of liquidation.

Nothing wrong with optimism around getting out of Scotland and it’s unique and idiosyncratic ways in football governance but excuse me if I will believe it when I see it.

Celtic have said that they don’t “object” to staff being in a trade union, but the club negotiates terms and conditions with staff individually.

Many of the workers are part time and will have no union representation.

For me it’s a matter of principle. Someone who works full time for Celtic FC should not have to claim benefits in order to make ends meet. Part time workers should be paid at the equivalent hourly rate. By not paying the living wage and forcing some staff to claim benefits, Celtic are effectively sponging off the state.

We are quick enough on here to criticise another former rival who didn’t pay their taxes. Our own club’s behaviour with regard to this issue is equally reprehensible.

  13. I was unlucky enough to watch the plum tie in the Scottish League Cup quarter finals last night and you will not see a poorer game this season in Scotland. Both teams struggled to do the basics of the sport and made it look difficult to score.

I must say the relatively new team look a very average outfit considering they have a few big earners on their books and former and current international players in their ranks. The manager would appear clueless and the panel of ‘experts’ appeared to know how to set the team up better and the tactics required in the 2nd half to secure a win. Their manager must have listened because they were marginally better in the 2nd half and appeared to take the thoughts on board especially from the former Jambo Mikey Stewart. I found it interesting that a current St Johnstone player was able to give an insight at half time on how to beat their team. Bizarre.

St Johnstone should go down this season unless there is a less equipped team in the SPFL Premiership. They really were unable or maybe not prepared to get stuck in and looked like if they went out the competition at this stage it would not be a big issue to the club. I would expect Celtic in their current up and down form to take at least 3 goals of each of these teams if we secured those goals early I would expect us to take 5 from them. I expected the new club/team to have a raft of young exciting players but alas they seemed to have a team full of cloggers who put argubaly St Johnstone’s best player out the game early albeit in a 50/50 type challenge.

The referee was a brother of a player who played for the now defuct club formely of Ibrox and seemed to let a lot of bookable challenges go for both sides.

Football can be ugly at times. Last night was a great example of how ugly it can really get. A really dreadful choice of match to be televised by the BBC. Some cracking ties tonight that will prbably make much better viewing the pick would probably be the current Premiership high fliers away to Aberdeen.

Onto Celtic and I expect both our in form strikers to start and Celtic to get off to a flier and score early doors and get the result secured. Guidetti first goal and a 3-0 victory to see us reach the League Cup semi finals.

The draw is on Saturday which is a strange choice again the BBC baffle everyone regarding their decision making.

The new club manager has already stated his fear of the current Scottish Champions in this lazy article from the BBC.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/29812195

The article contains such gems as:

“When you get to the semis, you can’t really pick and choose,” said McCoist.

    Really?

“We all know who the favourites will be to pick up the domestic trophies, so in that respect I would take anybody but Celtic.”

    Terrified!

Depending on the outcome of Celtic’s tie against Partick Thistle, Rangers could potentially face Ronny Deila’s side for the first time since April 2012.

The Rangers have never faced Ronny Deila’s side.

The last time the teams met was in the Scottish Premier League in April 2012, when Celtic won 3-0.

    Wrong!

So while some on here are panicking at the prospect of facing our new rivals across the city their own inept manager is terrified at the prospect and says so openly. I’ve not had the pleasure to speak to any Sevco fans today but as they consider themselves ‘Ra Peepul’ I would imagine they are not impressed by their managers admission. I remember when they supported the former club they welcomed the chase, etc. Now their manager openely fears Celtic.

Celtic need to get the job done tonight and the draw will produce any tie that comes up.

I would not be happy if our manager said he feared or wanted to avoid anyone in world football.

Whilst some are worried about Sevco I am in full agreement with our new striker we go out to win everything we enter no matter who we play. I remember when the draw was made for the CL when we were given Barcelona, Benfica & Spartak Moscow. Straight after the draw Neil Lennon was asked by a member of the MSM whether finishing 3rd in the group was the target. Neil said, no the target is always to win the group and people laughed at that. You set your standards high at big clubs and you play who the draw throws up. Sevco are afraid and they are right to be. Celtic will blow them out the park on what I saw last night. Swally is amusing though. The guy is a rent a quote rent a joke character. Always laughing that cheeky chappy. I think the time has come for Celtic to wipe the smile off his coupon for a while. If it is this tournament or a future one the time is getting nearer and even if he is allowed to buy 4 players as Charlie Nicholas seems to think they need to match us he would buy badly and set them up worse. The guy is clueless, classless and out of his depth.

Get the job done tonight Celtic and let’s sweep aside the rest of the teams whoever they may be in this tournament and get the first of hopefully 3 or 4 trophies in the cabinet for the season.

The staff who work in the Ticket Office are contracted to work until half time during matches at Parkhead.

Should they wish to attend the second half of any game they need to pay full price to gain admittance.

    Anyway, meeting to attend.

  20. John Guidetti is on loan to Celtic until the end of the season, when his contract with Man City runs out. Under the Bosman rule, JG is free to negotiate a new contract with any club from January onwards, such contract being effective from the end of the season. Man City are entitled to ask his new club for a “development” fee because he is under 24 and he has been their player through his development from youth level. there is a set formula for working out this fee, and UEFA decide the matter if the clubs cannot agree the figure. Celtic and Birmingham City agreed such a fee when Denny Johnstone left in the summer. It will be less than £500k.

JG seems to have indicated he wants a deal with Celtic. The fee is not the issue. His salary may be. Over to you, PL.

  21. If Manchester City decide to sell Guidetti in January and it may be within their rights to cancel his loan deal at that point and do that then I would send back Denayer. No way should we develop a clubs player for the remainder of the season whilst we also take on the wage of a player who would be nowhere near their squad anyway.

This story is however from the Daily Record and reported nowhere else I believe so it would appear that they are doing their usual before a match for Celtic which is to try and unsettle a player in our team.

Guidetti is no doubt a talent but has had a spate of injuries. I would be shocked if any club in Britain would be prepared to part with £5m for a guy out of contract in the summer. £1m would probably be the top price for such a player. I would prefer to hear what Manchester City say. We are doing a good job bringing on a future star of theirs in our defence and giving him valuable first team football at both a domestic and European level. If this story is mischief making from the Daily Record then Celtic should call them out on it and demand an apology and also if the apology is not forthcoming ban them from reporting at Celtic matches.

I noticed last night that Rob Mclean said they would not be hearing from The Rangers gaffer because they do not speak to the BBC. That new club have some baws. Celtic should grow a pair!
