Regional League concept gets an airing

257

Interested to read that “issues, such as the Regional League concept” were discussed at the 29 club European Club Association meeting, held at Celtic Park yesterday.  12 of the 13 nations present would all benefit from the regionalisation of their leagues, while Wales (and England) already participates in a regional league.

We’ve seen a few campaigns similar to this – with the objective of delivering Celtic out of the confines of Scottish football, but this approach is different.  It seeks to build an alliance with similarly disenfranchised clubs across the continent.  The Austrians, Czechs and Slovaks would benefit from playing in Germany, the Scandinavians would benefit by grouping together, while the former Yugoslavian teams have long acknowledged the merits of resurrecting a Yugoslav-regional league.

I was a wee bit surprised that the “Regional League concept” discussions were acknowledged.  I heard they’ve been on-going for some time but no one wanted to discuss in the public domain.  This will have been a considered comment, designed to move the debate beyond those present at the meeting.

Many thanks for the tremendous response to our auction appeal to build a fourth school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in Malawi.  The kitchen will be at Chibwata Primary School in Dowa, which has 909 children enrolled.  Will bring you more details when I have them.

The auction is for two debenture hospitality seats at the Inverness game on Saturday, courtesy of Club sponsor, Magners.  It closes Friday morning, so keep an eye on it here.

Linda Croker has asked me to pass on her sincere thanks for all the support received for Sean’s Trust and the memory of St John Doyle from the CQN community. I know the last year has been enormously difficult for the family but your many small gestures have meant a lot.

    HT, Please tell me that’s a wind-up.

It’s just plain wrong in so many, many ways that we could treat staff like that.

It used to until KO, when I worked there. Usually folk that weren’t going would let you away quick too. I used to be in my seat about 10 mins after the game started. Probably with staff cuts that’s not so easy now.

  4. No matter what Man City do or ask for, Celtic can sign John Guidetti on a Bosman during January with the contract to take effect from the day after his Man City contract expires. We already have a loan deal until the end of the season (no get out clauses have been mentioned so I’d assume there are none) so we can keep him until the end of the season as a loanee then as a permanent signing from the summer.

However, we will not meet the wages that he will be offered elsewhere and as such I reckon he’ll be playing for a lower to mid table EPL team next season or abroad, possibly Italy.

  5. If the ticket office staff were admitted to the second half for free, the notional cost of the entrance fee would be added to there gross annual earnings and this could push them into the higher rate tax bracket.

    I’m joking by the way!

Something to consider regarding treatment of employees.

The staff who work in the Ticket Office are contracted to work until half time during matches at Parkhead.

Should they wish to attend the second half of any game they need to pay full price to gain admittance.

    Anyway, meeting to attend.

Guidetti is 22 and doesn;t seem to be a daft young man.

He can play here for a couple of years win some trophies and play in Europe and then go South for the money.

If he listens to Sweden legend Henrik Larsson than I expect he would advise him to take the best contract on offer. Get a full season or two under his belt at Paradise and then go to a so called bigger club or better league. Maybe Guidetti is of the same mind as another former Man City loanee who stayed at Celtic for many seasons.

We can not 2nd guess what Guidetti is going to do in January or beyond but lets see how he does between then and now first of all. The knives are being sharpened for PL already and there hasn;t even been an offer made. Crazy!

  12. can we get Sammi on loan in January ?

Put him in the left wing position, watch the goals flow for the new two combo up front.

will ronni d persist with the two up front tonight, and tell his wing men, just to cross the ball faster than they did on sunday. make a quick decision, cross the ball, led the front two attack it, cmon, you know it makes sense.

  13. John Guidetti

The story in the DR is complete and utter rubbish. Man City CANNOT sell the player while he is on loan to us. Misinformation from the DR. Who’d a thunk it?

If JG wants to sign for us and his terms are met, he will. Man City will get a development compensation fee as I outlined above.

We signed Gary Hooper and Scott Brown on pre contract deals and they played out the remainder of their contracts with Scunthorpe and Hibs.

  14. Hamilton Tim….thats beyond a joke…no living wage now this…MORE THAN A CLUB…yeah right…wonder what else is going on the support dont know about….shamful..

Correct. Sort of. Loads of the folk that work in the TO are agency staff, and are there because that’s where they’ve been placed not because they necessarily want to work for Celtic.

Again a long time ago but in my time the agency people generally stayed on to let Celtic staff get to the game.

There were ticket discounts too. Sometimes 100% :). Changed days it seems.

  16. I was of the understanding that the living wage will be subject to a vote by shareholder. Has that happened?

I really hope he can be persuaded that his immediate future lies with us. He is what we need. He will score a lot of goals in SPFL, probably in Europe as well if he gets a chance but more importantly he is a figure that youngsters can look up to, someone who will put bums on seats. A star name in a club starved of star names since his countryman departed a decade ago.

I just think the modern footballer, in general, follows the money. Who can blame them?

I hadent been on for a while because my brother had been very ill, and we sit beside each other at every game and drink with each other at the weekends, like most brothers we are very close, he is my best mate as well as my brother, he has been in hospital for six months and is now on the mend (fingers crossed) it’ll be a while before he gets to a game but his goal is to make a few before the end of this season, I’ve missed him at my side as we re always together but as you all know I’m a glass half full guy so it won’t be long before he’s back at Celtic Park with the both of us cheering on the Bhoys, so mostly I’ve been lurking,, I never left, it’s just that I had other things more important in my life, but I did miss the banter. ;)

  21. If they are agency staff do we not pay the agency who then pay the staff?

ie Celtic FC have no control over their wages?

  22. Watched the St Johnstone game last night, utter garbage, watched better at any level no joke.

    Guidetti ?

Lots of speculation re him signing for an Italian club last summer.Never any quotes from him, Man City or the clubs said to be interested in him.Such speculation was always followed by a claim that Club x was no longer interested in Guidetti in consequence of the money being asked for a player with his injury record.Alternatively his wage demands had led to the club dropping its interest.

  24. Gary67

If Man City had their affairs in order in the first place Guidetti would already be scoring goals in Europe.

I am not going to slate Man City too much though because I believe this is complete nonsense thought up by some bored journo at the nearest bar to the Daily Record offices.

Tom and Geordie – it’s not just the DR that has prompted me to talk about signing Guidetti, I’ve been banging on about this for weeks.

Guidetti is the only striker we’ve had since Henke.

Magic, McDonald, Stokes, Kenny Miller, Dublin, Fortune,Camara, Rasmussen, Pukki, Balde, Sheridan, Murphy. Killen etc – how much have we chucked away on those (mostly unsuccessful with a couple of minor exceptions) players?

I make Hooper and Jan as our only strikers in the last ten years.

    Sign him now.

  27. Re: Guiddetti

He will hold on to see what else comes along. It might be May by the time he makes a decision.

I don’t think there is any doubt that the club is trying to sign him. He has been on the clubs radar for years.
