Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

  1. sevco share issue a failure with their fans, then some big wig

buys the shares at buttons and then dick dastardly green sells

his shares to this benefactor of sevco and thus practically owns sevco for a say 5 or 6 million or less than ten million

anyway, step forward mr dave king, possible you think?

I’m not sure it would see an immediate rise in costs – assuming that it generated a good media package – and without that it’s pointless.

I’m not sure we can cut costs for the fans – we make a loss without Euro football (which is not guaranteed, no matter who’s missing from the league) – that loss would only be greater if the tickets were cheaper.

HOWEVER, I think it would be a great gesture (and now affordable), if the cost of the 3-match package was taken off the base price of the ST for those that bought it and renew the following season – if we reach the last 16 of the CL.

and they’ve failed miserably, I dont see how they could force the issue if enough clubs wanted to stay in a national set up and to be hom

nest I dont see 2nd and 4rd division scottish supporters wanting to travel to the other end of the uk to see their teams getting gubbed.

What it would do though is weaken the power scotland has traditionally being an original memeber.

That’s obviously true, but one of the four ought to have thought about that before bending every rule in the book and inventing several new ones to accommodate a club that had cheated clubs all over Europe, especially Celtic, for a decade.

  6. So….Chunkles has stated on more than one occasion that any shares (pieces of paper with nonsense written thereon) not taken up will be bought (trousered) by himself, the lawd gawd awmighty.

So…given that there will be such a shortfall in uptake (stupidity) , then it should not be long until he does a bunk (leaves Scotland).

    Good. Glad to hear it.

I would be happy to play a resurgent Aberdeen at a full pittodrie but it’s more likely we play against a team with 11 behind the ball in a half empty stadium..

How good would it be to see the handshake, second name for a first, blazer culture stripped of their power over us?

    Bring it on.

  9. South of Tunis’s policeman friend is dead right. I have seen the BNP in numbers on the streets here in Leicester only twice – both Celtic friendly matches.

I don’t think, Paul, you do our club a service by propagating this fantasy of Celtic in an English or British league. Every single constituency with a say in the matter is opposed: all the ruling/administrative bodies, the individual clubs, the police, even the poor bloody infantry – the fans – are dead against it. The TV companies are happy enough with things as they are – the product is as popular as ever in the UK and overseas.

  10. I am sceptical of any reorganisation/changes which come from an organisation,UEFA, who fail in their own remit, to get football played by as many people as possible, instead they base the growth of football on viewing figures/audience.

England,Germany,France,Spain & Italy all have an inbuilt bias in the top club tournaments both in co efficient points as well as viewing audience,Would this bias change if regionalisation/reconstruction took place i tend to think not.

I do hope tho that change may come once the financial fair play is implemented fairly across Europe but I am not holding out much hope.

I think you are being naieve if you dont expect the dividend junkes to want to cash in, there was a 6% rise in price this year and I’m still not convinced there was any reason for it except greed, over the last few years they froze the price and watched season ticket numbers fall, what did they think was going to happen with that increase, honestly as an exec, after years of falling numbers would you believe a price increase would halt the falling numbers.

To me it looks like the supporters who remain are being penalised for being loyal, picking up the shortfall because the dividend must be maintained.

  12. danso, The Financial whizz kids on the Bears Den reckon that Chuck held his sale at Christmas time so there wouldn’t be a good take up by fans as he will buy up all the spare shares himself. Shur why wouldn’t he aren’t they an incredible bargain at 70p they can only go one way and that is up. They will double in value every year as they climb the Divisions. Stupid Zombies.

Huns now seem to be accepting amongst themselves that the share issue is going to come up well short, apparently 7 or 8 million of the initial pledges were supposed to have been made by Tims on the wind up.

As it stands of course you are right. The trick is changing that fact. Paying a fortune to travel to Norway to watch their version of Aberdeen pack 11 behind the ball in a half empty stadium seems a bit of a waste of time to me.

I expect if Celtic did move it would weaken their hand immediately

  16. On the back of a home game where an obviously biased cheat denies us at least 3 penalties, a national broadcaster refuses to mention said penalties, we are constantly lied to about the existence of a deid club, where the ruling bodies are turning over backwards to support a corrupt organisation that has cheated a nation for over a century, and steals millions of pounds and declares itself as superior to everyone else in this country and this view is largely accepted,

On the back of this we get a possible way forward, however slight it may be, out of the rigged ball game that is Scottish football, what do we find on CQN? negativity.

Paul, I commend your attempts to show a positive attitude to modern times affecting our club. You attempt to look at ways to change for the better. Some, I fear, on here only wish to wallow in self righteous, negative angst. IMO.

Anyone would think we were not 4 points clear at the top of the league, in the last 16 of the world’s premier tournament, financially secure and our erstwhile gravest rivals are in liquidation with little hope in sight.

Maybe – but I also think it’s romantic to assume that dropping the price to £300 will see 50k v 30k at £500.

Guys I know that have stopped going it’s for a variety of reason, some financial some not. Thing is a lot of them are now enjoying what they do with their time, the football habit has been broken.

We’ll need something to give the fanbase momentum again in order to get people back in droves, even at cheaper prices. We had stopping 10-in-a-row combined with finished stadium, then Seville before. It’s going to take the fianls stages of a Euro competition to get that again. Or a move to another league.

  22. Folk who attend the games seem to think that is the only way to watch Celtic play or feel part of the family.

It is but one way and what is to stop beam back of away games to CP in weather protected conditions becoming a norm?

Folk adapt to changing conditions so why all the fear?

The linkage to money is inescapble, it is what puts a team of watchable quality on the park, so why blame those whose job it is to do just that?

The world is shrinking.old borders and rules that separate us are tumbling, all that is needed is a change of ego thinking to make it happen.

We either get busy living (and face the future) or get busy dieing (and live in the past).

So the first time we seriously discuss the issue and anyone who doesnt go happyclapping into the sunset is negative. The real issues which will affect the club and support should be put aside so the glory hunters who can afford the glamour can do an ooozlem bird dragging the team out of the reach of a major percentage of supporters, address the points for a change rather than just snide pops at personalitiies.

    WINNING CAPTAINS

Interesting that an annual is on its way to Swindon, and to Kilwinning. None of them are for me-I just ordered one for my sister in Kilwinning. And I thought CELTFISH had got the monopoly on the Swindon area-good idea, btw, bud.

The postman will l-o-v-e it when he walks up the path with that in his hand-passing her car in British Racing Green with white roof on the way.

Anyway,I have a wee suspicion that the one you sent to Witney may be for our very-much esteemed PHILVISRETURNS. I think you may have missed a wee fund-raising opportunity there,as a few people may have paid good money to leave a personal message in it for him……..

  28. Bobby Murdoch’s…

Your point about getting out of the cesspit of Scottish football is also pretty tempting and hard to argue with. I’m just not convinced that a euro league solves all the problems, it is not fan-friendly for a start.

Anyway, I remember the days when the Jambos packed half the away end at Parkhead and the atmosphere was electric. Thats all I was getting at.

The product on the park being competitive and affordable is the goal for me, not how much money we can accumulate.

But the governors of the game are not singing from the same hymn sheet as the punters and that’s why this new set-up wont work.

The reasons we want to see change is for better football, better refereeing, more competition.

The proposals from on high are all geared toward revenue gain, thats where it all goes wrong I reckon.

    Cart before horse type thing.

  29. weeminger, Unfortunately there is a snowball effect in these matters. If attendances drop to 45,000 the atmosphere is not quite the same as a full house, result a few thousand less go next time, and so on until you are down to a real hardcore. IMO many things have to happen, No 1 We need entertainers on the Park a new Lubo is a priority. No. 2 Fixtures should be Home & Away alternate weeks, a regular Home game every fortnight that you can plan your life around. No.3 The Polis need to be told they are killing the atmosphere & badly damaging an important Scottish Tourist attraction that brings money & jobs to Glasgow. i.e. Let the People Sing. No. 4 Club should look how to make match day experience more enjoyable. Bars/Restaurants/pre match Entertainment. No. 5 Innovative Marketing. A couple of thousand Free tickets to schools/youth Clubs. Free tickets to S/B holders, 3 match tickets at attractive prices/reduce cost of S/B. Loyalty swipe cards to be used at turnstiles giving fans who come regularly priority for European/Away/Cup Finals etc.
