Regionalisation needs to be discussed before reorganisation

827

Dramatic and ambitions developments in European leagues, in this instance Russian and Ukraine, who have taken Michel Platini’s endorsement for the regionalisation of domestic leagues, should inspire the imagination of every football fan and administrator in a league with problems.

Scotland has a league with problems.

Our clubs and national association are committed to reorganisation but neither proposal from the Scottish Premier League or Scottish Football League does anything to halt the inevitable decline and marginalisation of our clubs.

In the 60s, 70s and 80s well-run Scottish provincial clubs regularly beat leading teams from big European countries but since then our small domestic market TV market has made most Scottish clubs also-rans, both in Europe and at home.  We have a league system where the battle for second place is competitive and interesting but does not carry a meaningful reward; only one club is capable of winning the league.

Before making any changes to our league system we need to consider what changes are happening elsewhere in Europe and have a mature conversation about regionalisation.

Ordered the CQN Annual yet? It is a product of literary brilliance. Get it here in time for Christmas!

    Green will of course tell the Zombies they had the chance to buy shares in the club and did not take them. Therefore any decisions regarding Sevco will put the shareholders first.

    I have no desire for Celtic to bankrupt themselves in England, but I do think Scottish football has to change to make it more competitive (I don’t have a solution) I would suspect that Celtic park would have better home crowds for a Euro league and hopefully better football.. But I could be wrong.

    If we are truly to embrace change and can do so without bothering to turn up, we could go all Fifa 13 and save a packet on real wages.

    Virtual Celtic :)

  4. Ticket prices ?

    I paid 24 euros for Palermo v Juve . It was far from being a sell out.

    I paid 8.50 euros to see The Hobbit in 3 D. The theatre was virtually empty .

    I could have seen The Hobbit [ not in 3D ] for 6 euros . That theatre was almost full.

    I hope Kenny Shiels stands up for himself.

    And I hope we will stand up for Kenny Shiels.

    He stood up for NEIL LENNON when EVERYONE in the Scottish game turned their back on him,and he has my utmost and lasting respect for that.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    In addition,Dallas jr has asked the authorities OFFICIALLY to back him. I reckon the result of this enquiry will finish him. Cos KS isnae gonna back down,from the looks of it……..
  6. All this talk of moving to another league is crazy-we are a Scottish club with Irish roots-we belong in Scotland-the solution is to keep on succeeding on the pitch-the more we win-the more we are noticed-the bigger our clout-the more respected we are.We are in the strongest position in our clubs history-now-in the present where it matters.
    Most other Scottish clubs regard sevco with contempt after the way they have conducted themselves-this is a new trend-with increasing goodwill being shared by the civilised clubs.
    Its encouraging to see fans volunteering to fill Tannadice-i loved that.
    Point is-the SPL,SFA and SFL have to be reformed-fans have to tell the clubs what they want and clubs in turn vote for a new ,open system-something fair-id love to see those guy fawkes masks being used in protests-aye
    Aye,I know,mate.
    But sometimes the old saying about better the devil you know disnae work.
    I’ve always believed in fighting from the inside,never turning my back when I know I’m right.
    But there are some battles we cannot win.
    By decamping,we can win. By staying,we will not.
  8. monteblanco
    We are fleecing ourselves and seemingly happy to pay the price.
    As long as supporters allow players of varying quality to demand as high a set of wages that bear no comparison to their ability to trap a ball with one touch and expect the club to sign them then nothing will change in respect of pricing.
    Clubs act mainly as conduits to fill players’ wage packets and then blame buffers when said players say sod off Celtic I’m signing for Wigan. They are offski but the club gets the blame.
    Football could be provided at reasonable prices if player wages were controlled across the spectrum.
    the big alternative most are ignoring is that Celtic are powerful enough to sort the scottish game if we want to.
    There is enough evidence of corruption to sue for loss of earnings and destroy the sfa, reincorporate that establishment with a fair and transparent modernised agenda for the good and future of the game.
    I understand Bilbao is different but it is still discrimination of some form. It would be akin to Celtic saying only Scottish players (or those of scottish heritage etc) could play for the club.
  13. I don’t have a fixed opinion as to whether a new league outside Scotland is the best thing, but I do know I do not trust those running the game in this country.
    I also know any “product” that doesn’t develope is doomed to fail.
    How successful would a Northern European league be? Don’t know, but not less so than the SPL. A larger TV market seems to be the driving force, and those Northern European countries would benefit from a larger market.
    A British League? Why would Bolton, Blackburn, Reading or any other club at that end of an already successful league vote for Christmas?
    More questions than answers at the moment, I’d have to see some actual proposals and what they would mean for ourselves and the other Scottish clubs.
    What would it mean for European qualification for instance?
    Would supporters who travel to away game currently be happy at missing these, or getting to a very limited amount of those games.
    Interesting debate, but speculation has been going on for a decade, nothing concrete as yet for us to consider.
    Enough prime facie evidence ok, but I reckon their hands are tied until LNS passes his judgement at least. Had the FTT not gone to appeal and found for HMRC the way forward would have been much clearer. The fat lady has still to sing.
  16. Celtic ARE a Scottish based club with strong Irish roots – always have been and always will be!
    If – at some future date – we should be part of a European Regional or Super League, we will STILL be a Scottish-based club with strong Irish roots.
    We will still be based in the East end of Glasgow and our home will ALWAYS be Celtic Park – just as Barcelona will always be a Catalan/Spanish club based in that city, and Bayern Munich a Bavarian/German club based there.
  17. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on
    TET,
    to me the answer is obvious, money, there is a ceiling on what can be charged for scottish competition, we already know from statements made by the execs that getting out of scotland will be good for the bank balance, better income streams will make them less dependent on the supporters and the less dependent they become the easier it is to disregard supporters concerns.
    depressingly you are right again. The reason we need to explore fancy dan Euro set-ups is to raise more revenue for paying bonkers wages to superstars with no loyaly.
    We will do this by making away games unaffordable to punters and when punters cant afford even the home games its fine, because we can get them to subscribe on line.
    Aye, the future of the game is in good hands
    I know that a civil court works on balance of probability,rather than the criminal system of beyond all reasonable doubt,but for Celtic to destroy the SFA,etc,will need proof beyond either of them.
    The fact that the huns are apparently still the huns,and indeed were punished for the square root of sod all is now the prevailing mantra.
    That is an example of the problem faced by Celtic if they decide to go nuclear-the slightest doubt,the tiniest bit of wriggling room,the merest opperchancity for someone to say-erm,not quite,ya buncha f….. b…….-and we would have lost every chance of ever grinding them into the dust.
    It has to be done right. It has to be done clinically and surgically.
    And it has to be final,without ANY chance of a comeback.
    Clearly,not that simple,bud………
  22. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on
    Auldheid,
    licensing irregularities alone could destroy them but even without that, deadco aleady admitted to a number of players remuneration issues in the FTTT, that would be enough in its own without waiting, fair enough it would be a stronger case if all charges were won, the problem is of they are not won then everyone will forget the already admitted irregularities.
