Relentless Forrest a blast from O’Neill era

138

James Forrest’s cross for Odsonne Edouard’s equaliser yesterday was like a goal from the Martin O’Neill era, when so much of our play was about getting crosses to drop in front of goal.  It contrasts with the ball across the face of goal, or pulled back, which we more commonly see today.  The difference in styles reflects the difference in personnel, but it often takes variation to prise open a packed defence.

While Odsonne continues to grab the headlines, James’ has an equal claim to the Most Valuable Player title.  He was relentless yesterday.

Fair play to Kilmarnock, their 6-3-1 formation required a couple of exceptional goals to break their resolve.  They will do all right this season, or at least, better than their early results suggested.

Six games, six wins, 21 goals for and four against is impressive form.  We won two from our opening six last season, scoring only six goals.  The same this season would have Newco in the kind of frenzy not seen since their Petrofac Cup win.  While we bossed them at Ibrox, they are hanging in there.  Both teams will be taxed between now and Christmas as the Europa League group stage progresses.

  4. *** CQN PLAYER OF THE YEAR 2019-20 ***

    RESULTS FROM GAME #5 – CELTIC 3 KILMARNOCK 1 (EDOUARD 2, CHRISTIE)

Thanks again for our support, with 52 folk taking part in the voting. For this game there was fairly general consensus with the top 3 places but a bit closer for the minor placings. There was even a vote for Fergus McCann (thanks, Big Archie).

So without further ado I can announce that the total votes cast for each player (the asterisk are next to my own 3 picks) was as follows –

    Forster: 9

    Bauer: 14*

    Jullien: 7

    Ajer: 0

    Bolingoli-Mbombo: 7*

    Brown: 2

    McGregor: 6*

    Forrest: 33

    Ntcham: 3

    Christie: 24

    Edouard: 49

    Hayes: 1

    Elhamed: 0

    Rogic: 0

Unused subs – Gordon, Taylor, Bayo, Elyounoussi

So the players receiving points for the Kilmarnock game are –

    Edouard – 5 points

    Forrest – 4 points

    Christie – 3 points

    Bauer – 2 points

    Forster – 1 point

This means that the aggregate total points are as follows –

    Forrest – 15 points

    Edouard – 13 points

    Jullien – 11 points

    Christie – 10 points

    Bolingoli-Mbombo – 8 points

    Elhamed – 7 points

    Brown – 5 points

    Bitton – 3 points

    Bauer – 2 points

    McGregor – 1 point

    Ajer – 1 point

    Forster – 1 point

Next game is on Wednesday against Partick Thistle so the voting will open from the final whistle until 10pm on Thursday.

    Hail Hail!

  5. Just looking at the POTY points so far – excellent work Job – is there a particular reason that McGregor is not getting picked?

I don’t usually get to see the games due to work but wonder what the reason is.

  6. Majestic Hartson – McGregor has received votes in 4 of the 5 games so far (Sevco being the excepion). The way that I’ve set this up is that folk can vote for their 3 top players. I’m sure you’ll agree that in most of our recent games just about everyone on the park has played reasonably well or better; very few are having really poor games. So McGregor is certainly, in my opinion, playing well but it’s just the fact that, usually, there are 3 or 4 players that are playing even better. He got one of my 3 votes yesterday ;-)

    Time for my kip….

BSR mentioned earlier about big Fraser’s penalty stats at Celtic. I had a look at his overall career record and he has saved 13 out of 34 which is remarkable. He is a huge asset to us as we press on for 9 in a row, great to have you back big man.

BBC Scotland early evening news last night showed footage of two matches in Scotland and two in England. Rounded up the football with “in the other game played today Celtic …”

    Hail hail and good night.

  11. McGregor was my Motm for Sunday, but I didn’t put him in the top 3 for Jobo’s votes. Why?

Eddie, 2 goals. Has to be in the top 3. Christie, goal, that ball to Forrest and dynamism. Forster, one good save and a penalty.

Not to mention Forrest who was a goal threat all of the first half and got an assist.

So how could I put CalMac above any of them. Yet, there he was. Majestic all of the game EXCEPT for two lapses near the end and not shooting when he should have. A goal or assist will get him up the top.

  15. I am an “Old” Celtic supporter these days given my Age.

As a youngster in the East End of Glesga, I like many others , dreamed of playing for Glasgow Celtic.

But I suppose I was also greedy, because I wanted to be playing for Celtic against the Huns and go off on a Mazy run from the wing or midfield, leaving several huns in my wake…draw their Hun Goalie out….dance around him…and take the ball within inches of the Goal Line….and look around and because of the time and space available, I would get down on my knees and stoop and Heid the Baw over their Goal Line….Pure Magic !

This Goal would come about after we were 2 or 3 Goals up and coasting…..and it would surely cue for bedlam in the huns end, with many desperate to leave…and others battling with each other due to witnessing the ultimate humiliation ?

Sadly, I never fulfilled my “Dream”…at least not at Celtic Park, Hampden nor Ipox….But I did come close on several occasions on the Streets/Grass Verges of Easterhouse during the 1960’s….as my best Pal was a Hun.

Almost every Day, I would be wearing my Celtic Shirt/Strip…and he would have his Hun kit on.

It was literally “One on One”, and because I was a better Fitba player than him, these “Match Ups” would finish in My/Celtics favour every time…I would Dance around and Dazzle the Hun Bassa at every opportunity, with him unable to get the Baw aff Me.

I teased and tormented this best pal every time….and sometimes after dribbling by him 5/6 times…he would literally “Chuck It”…exhausted and bewildered….and I would take the Ball to his Goal Line, get on my knees, stoop….and heid the Baw over the huns Goal Line.

Quite often, while being on this mazy dribble and tormenting the poor Bassa…I would also be giving him a running commentary…..” and its Jimmy Johnstone on the Ball, going by Greig, McKinnon etc etc”….just to annoy him further.

I would also sometimes deliberately wait until a Corpy Double Decker Bus stopped next to were we where playing, and give all the passengers on the Bus the opportunity to watch a young Celtic Bhoy…” Rip the Piss” out of a Hun !

Did that make me a BAD person ?

This Hun best Pal was no Mug..he could play a bit….and he also had other Hun Pals from his school….and when we played 4 or 5 a side etc…I would “Rip the Piss” outa every one of them also !

His Hun Pals didnae like me very much, as I was usually the ONLY Tim amidst a Platoon of Hun Bassa’s

    Ah yes…the Joys of Youth…

That Hun best Pal, was to later be my Best man at my first wedding, despite his attempts in earlier years of trying to kick lumps out of me !

  18. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Very good article on CQN today discussing the lack of reportage on these pages of Scott Brown’s consistently high performance levels for Celtic. Scott is a victim of his own incredibly consistency, so much so that his great performances for Celtic are often met with a “meh”, no more than you would expect. The same lack of appreciation of Scott’s performances are prevalent within sections of the support too. I think it was GFTB on here who often said that we would not fully appreciate what we have with Scott, until he hangs up his boots. Unfortunately that day is almost upon us.

Hail Hail Broonie. Captain. Leader. Legend.

  19. TEUCHTER AR LA and FAVOURITE UNCLE…

Thank you gentlemen for your “Votes/Award” etc, I have never felt so humble and may I take this opportunity to also Thank all my Family and Friends over many years for their unconditional support in relation to “THAT GOAL”…which I have probably replayed in my head since around 1962.

Please Note….I have NEVER Missed in any of the Replays either !

I should add that MY Hun Pal has never been to an OO Walk ( to my knowledge), but he just supported the Old Club as best he could. In fact his Birthday is on the 13th July…and I would also wind him up, by reminding him that “Its such a shame that you just missed the 12th” ! LOL

I dont see much of him these days, but back in those days in Easterhouse, even he realised that once I pulled the Green and White Hoops over ma Heid….I would be “Unplayable”…the result was never ever in doubt, despite him becoming a good player himfself.
