Remarkable distractions need to end

424

The worst way to end a bad week was for a loose-mouthed agent to pitch up at Lennoxtown on Friday before setting off on a rant because Brendan Rodgers was not available to him at a time he wanted.  We had a remarkable week of distractions in and around the dressing room.  These things often correlate with a poor result.

Brendan would be pleased to get his players out of the country yesterday, giving him two days to focus the squad on the matter in hand – tomorrow night’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens.  This is where the manager earns his money.

Only a unified squad will have a chance of getting the required result against AEK.  The better players in the first leg against AEK were these settled at Celtic for the long-term – McGregor, Brown, Tierney, Ntcham, Forrest.  Tactical conversations will be needed, but the first thing Brendan needs to infuse into the squad is a laser-like focus.

  1. Jobo’s Hypothetical 11 could get the required result if they all played to their potential.

I hope whoever takes the field does exactly that.

All about tonight today, so to speak.

Dont forget two sellout games at Celtic Park for the Qualifiers.Around 2- 3 million brought in there. We certainly wont be skint.Time to show us the money.People on here digging up CHs that are available.Maybe contact Congerton and let him know.

There was a time recently, when the fans were going nuts at John Park.Seems he could scout great defenders, and midfielders for us,but when it came to Forwards, was a poor judge.

Looks to me as if our present scout ,apart from Ntcham, has this problem in reverse.

What is our signing policy – can you expand on how Celtic’s signing policy is different to any other major club? – taking into account, our annual accounts, profit and loss, yada yada since 1994?

Other CQN’rs have, and come to very different conclusions than you insinuate daily.

Take your time, but leave out the barren informationless sweeping generalisations

Football managers all over the world get frustrated with signing players they want, presently Jose Mourinho is frustrated because he didn’t get the players he wanted, and he’s at the richest club in the world.

    What does your post prove?

Regarding your aside you are not seriously suggesting on a Celtic fan site that Celtic have something to hide which may be compared with Rainjurz football fraud because we haven’t gone public about how ‘they’ signed players?

Was that not what LNS was tasked to do?.

If you’ve got this information could you go public with it?

Did AC Milan, Lazio, Inter or the like make any statements when Rubentus were exposed for serious football fraud?

If yes, can you again, enlighten us?

Everybody and their dog knows that Brendan Rodgers is a good manager, but ‘turn us round’ is more hyperbole.

  7. My last word on ‘the rat’ Boyata. He says he has 100% confidence in his agent. Well Deadryck ask yourself this, if he’s that good why didn’t he, when negotiating your contract with Celtic, simply have a sell on clause inserted saying if a bid came in above a certain figure we would be forced to let you go?

Is it because he never thought you would reach a high value?

  9. BR on Dedryck Boyata: “It would have been great to have had him here, but he’s not and we have to put our faith in the squad of players who want to be here and fight for the result. And that’s my focus, on the players that we have”.

  11. I am often quite pessimistic before European away ties. Experience has drummed it into me to expect disappointment.

    There are rare one-off exceptions

    Dinamo Moscow in 2009

    Spartak Moscow in 2012

    Anderlecht in 2017

but its mostly a litany of our defence showing The Fear or an unfortunate defeat after a plucky showing.

Facing the Greek Champions in the heat of Athens in mid-August does not ease the challenge.

They are a competent skillfull and streetwise side without obvious stars. They are a notch above Rosenborg and 2 notches above Alashkert.

I would feel more confident if we had a side likely to keep their score at 0. I have little doubt that we can score over there but I have more doubt about our defensive strength.

I make it that we have managed to keep the opposition out in the following matches

    2018- Alashkert and Rosenborg

    2017- Anderlecht, Rosenborg and Linfield

2016- every team scored agin us including Red Imps

    2015- only Qarabag

    2014- only KR Reykjavik

    2013- Cliftonvile and Elfsborg

    2012- Helsinki and Helsingborg

2011- no clean sheets in 4 matches (We got a clean sheet vs Sion on appeal)

2010- no clean sheet in 2

    2009- Dinamo Moscow & Hamburg

So in the past decade we can often manage in Qualifying rounds 1 & 2 but rarely beyond.

All this pessimism might recede the nearer we get to kick off. We do have a good manager and a decent squad but I still think we will need to score twice

  12. Jamesgang,

I will be there Kevin was my Buiness partner for 10 years, we cycled the Great Wall of China together and we remained good friends till the end. See you there possibly.

  13. Good morning fellow Tims.

Tonight will take care of itself. Either way we will still have European football to entertain us for a few more weeks at least .

Won’t be in the Bad Ass this weekend for the Plastic Whistle game as I’ll be in the wilds of County Clare. Does anyone know of a pub that will show the game in around the Corrofin area on Satuday considering there’s a nonsense EPL game on at the same time?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

As I and many others have said before …stressing about a very successful football team becoming slightly less successful is a very trivial thing

  16. Boyata is now reaping what his agent has sown. His position is now untenable and needs to be moved on ASAP. If he has any sense he will bin his agent. How often do we see players who think they are bigger than the Club and go on to have a less than bang average careers?

When you leave Celtic, with very few exceptions, the only road is downhill.

If, and it is a very big IF, we get through tonight then I would like to see John Terry come in for the season. Even if we don’t he might be worth a punt for the Europa League. I would even let him turn up for the trophy presentation in his Chelsea strip………………….mibbe naw?

  17. Would it be just like Celtic with so many odds stacked against us to go out tonight and get a result???

I don’t think from what Brendan said that AEK will play much differently at home they’re a counter attacking team, we could have plenty of the ball but as we saw last week they’re a very tough nut to crack..

“Take your time, but leave out the barren informationless sweeping generalisations.”

Yet again you go back to 1994. Unsure of the relevance. It seems that you want to make Celtic’s position now comparative to where we were prior to 1994. That’s a pretty poor method of argument. For example, if elements of the NHS are privatised today, I don’t look back in history and compare the present to the period when we didn’t have the NHS. In that light, even an NHS which is appreciably being gutted/deteriorating is better than what preceded it. That seems to be the argument you lead with.

As for the comparison to Mourinho. I believe he has already broken the British transfer record and made 3 major signings this summer. He is demanding more. But can you make the argument that Brendan has had a similar summer of progress in the transfer market? There has been scant progression or replacement of players sold- as Brendan has stated on multiple occasions.

Re your comments on the EBT. Evidently misconstrued my position. It was a rebuttal to your claim we didn’t use EBTs- we did in first instance and quickly desisted. I don’t think our board is worthy of praise for not engaging in criminality. That’s the base level to expect. It’s an indictment on Oldco’s board that they engaged in criminality; it doesn’t follow that our board deserves praise for not doing so.

And did AC, Inter etc make a comment? No they didn’t as Juventus were suitability punished for the scandal, can the same be said for Oldco?

Was the Nimmo Smith inquiry in anyway credible? After all, they didn’t even take into consideration the tax liability that Rangers had already admitted guilt to (wee tax case). In addition, “no sporting advantage” was obtained by Oldco for having greater funds at their disposal- that’s novel! Oh and “imperfectly registered players”. Amazing new interpretations of the law and sporting regulations. Oh, and the findings were not even caveated, i.e. the EBTs haven’t been ruled illegal at this point, so Oldco have not acted in contravention of the rules, however, should they be ruled illegal, then Oldco would have been in contravention of the rules.

So Brendan didn’t turn things around? Whatever way you cut it, that’s just not true. I asked previously but you never provided an answer, but please explain (aside from hiring Brendan), what policies the board have implemented in Brendan’s era that were not in place during Ronny’s era? And the causal link between those policies to our success?

If you cannot name any, then you must put our success down to Rodgers.
