Remarkable distractions need to end

424

The worst way to end a bad week was for a loose-mouthed agent to pitch up at Lennoxtown on Friday before setting off on a rant because Brendan Rodgers was not available to him at a time he wanted.  We had a remarkable week of distractions in and around the dressing room.  These things often correlate with a poor result.

Brendan would be pleased to get his players out of the country yesterday, giving him two days to focus the squad on the matter in hand – tomorrow night’s Champions League qualifier against AEK Athens.  This is where the manager earns his money.

Only a unified squad will have a chance of getting the required result against AEK.  The better players in the first leg against AEK were these settled at Celtic for the long-term – McGregor, Brown, Tierney, Ntcham, Forrest.  Tactical conversations will be needed, but the first thing Brendan needs to infuse into the squad is a laser-like focus.

It did cross my mind or a three with Mik on one side and Kieran on the other???

Be interesting to see how we line up…

A back three is a possibility, Hendry is getting some heavy criticism, so much so that Brendan may be forced to play three at the back to help Jack, with Ajer suspended we have limited options

  5. We need someone to play the passes from the back one mistake like Saturday leads to a goal, Bitton would have been ideal and let the CHs deal with their two strikers , dont know who else we have that is reliable in that role, cant see Moussa starting tomorrow and it will probably be Odsonne with support from Forrset and Mcgregor, I think if BR and the team pull this off it will be their best European result considering the fitness and availabilty issues. I hope it is a famous night for the team.

  6. For a decade or so, I have lurked. My rare posts are largely, and no doubt deservedly, ignored. But I can take the long view.

Many contributors still offer thoughtful insights. Some like the excellent Auldheid actually get important things done. The site is also still aware of its public service obligation and continues to offer sanctuary to psychotics. (The early stages are marked by obsessive reference to ‘heated driveways’ and an inability to distinguish between capital and revenue.)

But here’s my point, caller: there is a cyclical problem with Celtic. Over the last 50 years the club has – by design or by chance – frequently dominated Scottish football and sometimes enjoyed a degree of success in Europe. Almost as soon as it is achieved this pre-eminence is squandered.

The Lions were scattered far too soon. Only Danny of the Quality Street kids had a decent long-term career with Celtic. To teach Big Billy a lesson, the custodians oversaw the disintegration of two good squads. I’d hesitate to include the MON tenure as an example of anything meaningful. Martin’s commitment – I feel – belonged in the ‘qualified’ category. But should Brendan go – for whatever reason – his successor will be, inevitably, inferior.

Finally, where is Cadizzy when you need him?

One would think Brendan might say no to that. Regardless, they couldn’t afford him.

Over the last 50 years, you say, you seem too sensible, surely 49 is the magic number on this site. :-)

  9. David/Gary/Bada.

If we believe everything we read, tell Ollie to get in the long queue.

Surely Dedryk, Jozo and Moussa are all ahead of him.

    Hail Hail

  10. Re Ollie.

That’s what happens when we have great players in our team.

    Dedryck is a classic example.

    So he is.

    Fritzsong,

You are the 2nd most magnificently monikered poster who inhabits these scribbling walls. I always pay attention to your posts.

My grandfather maintained that Stein saw reason to lose the odd cup game as a concession to the Kelly’s and Whites to ensure they didn’t usurp his supervision of league domination. He also thought big billy played the ball with his shins and wasn’t much of a football player.

I do wonder sometimes if there are posters who are blighted by elephantiasis of the fingers and instead of individual qwerty keys they have a big button that says ‘heated drive way’ . A lobotomy may make a considerable difference.

Got a text saying Eddie is out and Jozo a doubt. I hope someone has had too many Mythos and is at the bam up.

Seemingly Eddy sat out training, that’s where the rumour has came from, whether that makes him a doubt or not, I genuinely don’t know.

    Hail Hail

  15. £20mill for Olivier, +£20mill for Moussa, £7mill for Boyata, received £7 mill for Stuart plus another £8 mill from Virgils’ wee gift. spent £5mill or so on Eddy. Bloody hell bhoys we have cracked it, we’ll have that shiny new hotel built in no time :-)

  16. Whilst i’d love us to win tomorrow, failing to do so may focus the boards minds on how important player recruitment is to revenue. The money aspect of CL qualification will be a sore loss but not fatal. A Sevillesque run in the europa league, preceeded by deadwood cleared from the squad, quality players recruited, i’d be asking YaYa Toure if he’d like to come for a year and teach Kouassi the ropes, freeing Broonie to drive forward more. At CB i’d like to see an Argentinian,Uruguayan and or Italian combo, mean and tough defenders are what’s required in this country so we should have the meanest and best, simples. Bit carried away there but you get ma drift, in a nutshell i’d take the above, a good window with quality brought in, qualification for the EL, the team galvanised, the trinity restored and the huns tanked at CP. Thing is my gut feeling is we’ll go through tomorrow night HH

Delaneys Dunky – I don’t sorry. Chatted to him once on here about 10 years ago as i’m from Drogheda. That was about it.

Cadizzy is fine – maybe lurking as I post

The old guard are still here – the one dimensionals, multi identies and repeat posters are very tiring but we remain – although I do have occasional rant cos I’m not too pleased at the moment!

Couldnae agree more. I liked the mean Uruguay defence in World Cup. A coupla that type of centre backs would delight me. A deadball expert too please. Like Naka.

For what it’s worth I think we will get beat tomorrow night.

That Athens team seemed to have a bit of pace about them and I don’t recall them giving the ball away. I can’t see them doing much different other than pushing up a wee bit more and doing one of those start stop pressing things that are all the rage.

Hendry and Jozo look ok at the traditional functions of a centre half but not ok at the stuff Pep Guardiola has changed the game with such as passing and controlling possession.

A wee aside – I was listening to talkSPORT about an hour ago on the way home from work (Clyde was on and that guy that calls Dermot Desmond … Desmond Dermot was on so I turned it over. Dogs breakfast to brexit.

Anyway – Strachan was on and he was saying Man City are now just leaving a big hole in the middle of the pitch when the goalie kicks it out rather than everybody hanging around the centre circle like a bus stop. He also said that only about 2 teams in the world can play the way Man City set up to play and everybody else trying gets caught out by Pep. Interesting insight onGordons pragmatism and percentage play approach. It would be interesting to hear what his thoughts would be on coaching boys on hitting a target with a pass. If they can’t do it fo you give up and tell them to hoof it?

Which brings me to Hendry and Jozo and probably the rest. We got caught by the press of St Johnstone and Hibs last season and Rosenborg looked good for a half this season.

I hope we are calm in possession and move for one another. I fear that won’t be the case.

Shout out to McGinns in Galway were I watched AEK first leg last week. If any of the McGinn locals are on here. Despite result had a good time and chat with Paul from Glasgow who is based there 11 years as he was telling me. Good pub!
