Remarkable statistic illuminates Armstrong’s rise

307

There was only a minute between Celtic’s second and third goals against Partick Thistle on Friday evening but for that moment, a remarkable statistic had currency. Stuart Armstrong scored three and assisted two of Celtic’s six previous goals in the league. This is a level beyond an incredible upgrade in form.

Watching Stuart’s blossoming in recent weeks, you still get he’s been playing within himself for much of the last two years. It could be that the inverted-left-winger role didn’t suit him, or that the step up to the pressures of playing for Celtic inhibited him to the extent that the levels of confidence necessary to perform were not to be found.

Even now, watching his body language on the field, and in interview, he looks like he’s still finding his way. I’m pretty sure there’s more to come from him, given the necessary support.

    Gerry,….it’s like this fella…..

If, like me,…you had been in the magical Jungle on the night of the Legendary, never to be forgotten, magical night of the 4-2 gemme in 1979,….then, you would view today’s Cellic events as well, nae where near that level of magic in 1979.

I’m not trying to preach to you or, lord it over you….those are hunnish traits.

I really do wish that you where there.

For me, the 4-2 gemme in 1979, was the best Cellic gemme since Lisbon…imho(in my humble opinion).

Just think about what was at stake….

Cellic lose or draw and the huns win the treble, they’re 3rd treble in 4 years.

Cellic won with 10 men vs the usual mibbery etc.

Cellic won with a magical-hun-skelping-goal, scored by my favorit all time Celt Murdo MacLeod, not the best player that I have ever seen in a Cellic jersey, that was King Kenny Dalglish, the best player to ‘ever’ play football on the British isles the white Pele imho(in my humble opinion)….Murdo is my favorit Celt coz, he wizny born a Celt but, will die a Celt – take Murdo away from the Maestro’s side and what dae ye get ?….a hun 9 in a row.

There are some Cellic fans who, strangely or, twistedly….choose an og from a Rangers player as they’re best Cellic goal ever ?????…that’s up to them.

Cellic were leading 3-2 on that night but….where hanging by a thread as, it was a game that could have gone either way, especially with the Cellic down to 10 men….so, when Murdo scored his cracker into the roof of the net at the Cellic end, the magical Jungle celebrated they’re best celebration since the Mr Stein days…that says it all for me…nothing since has touched that magical night for me.

Only saying Gerry – Hail Hail

Ah know that ye hate me Gerry and that your probably hoping that I’d fall into the trap that ye laid and start bitch fighting with ye on Paul 67’s sacred blog and get ma jotters but,….thing is,….yer no cute enough to lure me :-)

No hatred at this end, I actually enjoy your Celtic posts about the team, 1977 was my first game SSW Innsbruck ? Didn’t attended the 1979 4-2 game as I was playing 5’s, first Hun game was 1980 3 Celtic fans & 2 rangers fans in a ford escort xr3…..

Sorry, I missed your reply at the bottom of the page last night.

“Beating overrated teams from the self proclaimed best league in the world is hardly an achievement:))”

Well, if that’s true, surely only beating them on away goals is even less of an achievement?

Round of 16 (2012-13). Bayern 3-3 Arsenal. Bayern through on away goals.

“My point being is he took over a team and system that was overpowering everyone in the Champions league changed it and failed to win when it counted.”

And hardly “overpowering” either, just like the tight final they won against Dortmund that year, needing a last-minute winner to clinch it.

Maybe that hammering of Barcelona has made you think they were better than they were, a match you were under the impression was a stain on Pep’s record until reminded he wasn’t there any more!

    KevJ, hope you are well!

Like you, I was in my usual spot in the Jungle that night celebrating the famous 4-2 game. It was a fantastic game and with the exception of the 1970 games against Leeds United, probably was the best match since 1967. However, your memories are a wee bit clouded.

Celtic were not hanging on by a thread. The Bhoys, despite being down to 10 for most of the game, were in the ascendancy for most of the second half. It was because we pressed hard against them that we won. There were 4 goals scored in the last 15 minutes – McCluskey for 2-1; Russell for 2-2; Jackson (o.g.) for 3-2; and Mcleod for 4-2.

A team hanging on by a thread doesn’t produce a performance like that. Driven on by Roy Aitken, the 10 men dominated Rangers and that’s why the victory is so much sweeter – despite the odds, we were the better, more dominant team!

  15. On the LH question — does he have a future with us?

I am not sure — he is a more complete player and a bigger personality than most teenagers we have brought through recently. Consequently he has brought something different to the team when he has played.

However not sure if he is trying to hard, trying to do too much by himself.

He plays a lot of good football but he makes a lot of mistakes — still a WIP to me.

His style reminds me of the few times I saw JI play up north — RC? — when he left.

Consequently LH needs to work on his game and his decision making — play as part of a team.

    MF Three — 2017/18 — JMcC / SA / TR.

However I think a lot of this MF talk is self indulgent.

We really need to work on our defence for next season.

New RB / JS / ES or hopefully better / KT plus better back up.

We are currently good enough for the EuL — for the CL we will need better.

Watching out for HBS after Christmas.

I blame myself for us going out that night, as I shouted, when the fifth goal went in: “TF I’ve taped this!”

And then there followed their slow motion winning ( on away goals) goal. That cross, going out, no, knocked back across goal, where’d he come fae? Header and oot!

  22. Also remember a nail biter in the 70s v Boavista.

0-0, first leg, away, 2-1 going into the last 10 minutes, one goal from them and we’re out, having been 2-0 with early goals, before they pulled one back before half-time.

Enter Dixie with 5 minutes to go!

  23. Can imagine some laughter at ‘nail-biter’ from those lucky basta. . . Er, people, who were at the Vojvodina game!

    High stakes that night.

  24. Another bonus from the Boavista night was that St. Etienne papped the Deidclub out of the Big Cup, just as Dixie was scoring.

Still, they got a great bike out it!

  25. Re the Partizan game,I can still see Anton Rogan running after the ball to get it back into play asap………we were up in the game and in the 3rd minute of added on time, hindsight is great but i’m sure Tommy Burns was an unused sub that night, stick him on and give him the ball to run down the clock……….

Ah, the 4-2 game, told you all before, the Bannockburn bus broke down at Stepps bus garage, and no replacement bus available, by time I got in – main stand that night KevJ, we were already 1 doon, not for long though :-)

    Not my favourite though

That’s goes to 3rd May 1986 ( for different reasons) got home from South Africa on 2nd, won the league 3rd and first daughter born (9th) all inside 7 days

Now Liam Henderson – need to remember he is only 20, and lots to learn, look at Tom Rogic, 24 on Friday, only broke into team in past 18 months or so – point maybe worth holding onto Liam for another 12 months at least – in saying this he does need games

I also think Ryan Christie has a future with us

Great to be a Bhoy ain’t it :-)))))
