Reo, Alexandro: Brendan gets managing

Finishing third last season, Aberdeen go straight to the Europa League playoff round, so their only competitive game since losing 5-0 at Celtic Park at the end of last season was Saturday’s 0-0 draw at Livingston.  They prepared for the season with only four friendlies, meaning they have seen less game time than anyone else in the league, perhaps in the country.

Our record at Pittodrie is excellent.  There have been 11 wins and two draws since the last defeat, under Ronny Deila, still, for my generation, this is always a daunting fixture.  We were conditioned during more difficult times.

What happened last season to Aberdeen remains unexplained.  Jim Goodwin had them performing well, but letting a two-goal lead slip late on against Newco derailed them.  Form disintegrated amid humiliating defeats to Darvel, Hibs and Hearts.

Barry Robson took over as interim and effected an immediate turnaround.  From an unlikely position, they climbed the table into third position, sweeping aside Hibs and Hearts without trace of their earlier defeats.  Barry’s status as a winner is without question among the Celtic support, I hope he succeeds at Aberdeen, although not for a few more days.

I was a bit surprised to read Brendan Rodgers suggesting that Reo Hatate “has to prove himself”.  This is no more true for Reo as it is for everyone else in the squad.  Managing a couple of dozen young athletes will require various techniques, I hope this is merely a way to tweak Reo’s role.

One technique all managers like to employ is making an example of a miscreant.  Alexandro Bernabei missed a team meeting and put his own neck in the stocks.  If there is a serious athlete in there, he had better show himself quickly.

  1. If we lose at Aberdeen on Sunday or drop points, it will leave no one any the wiser as to whether we are stronger or weaker or just the same as last year.

If you lose your first game or 2nd game or 29th game- you drop 3 points. We drop points in every season so it will tell us nothing if we drop some (or win all 3) at Pittodrie.

The season is a distance event and you canot read anything into early form. Which is why I don’t discount Sevco after their Killie loss.

I always expect that we will drop points somewhere unexpected. And I am usually right. The problem is being able to determine the time and place where that happens. Could be Pittodurie- might not be.

    That’s the beauty of football

Celtic have openly promoted a discover an unknown prospect early ,develope them and sell them at a profit .

Paul67 has confirmed this for a few years now .

The player trading is proof that financially the model is working .

When Celtic sign these players ,part of the pitch is to sell the club as a stepping stone to a richer league .

Commenting on player trading ,and potential sales is surely normal .

I am a fan of the model ,but I do believe that there is room for a Joe Hart type signing within the model .

  5. Celtic have agreed a fee to sign Gustaf Lagerbielke and the defender will arrive in Scotland next week to undergo a medical ahead of signing a deal, according to a report.

  6. CELTIC is closing in on the signing of Elfsborg defender Gustaf Lagerbiekle after reports tonight from a very well placed source confirming a fee had been agreed.

Swedish based journalist Anel Avdic, who initially broke the story has on Friday night confirmed the player is set to travel to Glasgow to tie up a move. The fee is believed to be around £3m and will become a record fee received by Elfsborg.

  9. Gustaf Lagerbielke, 23, blir Elfsborgs nya rekordförsäljning.

Enligt uppgifter till Expressen är Celtic och Elfsborg överens om en övergång och mittbacken reser inom kort till Glasgow för läkarundersökningar.

    Prislappen: Omkring 40 miljoner kronor.

  10. No idea is the Swedish fella is any good or not, most of the Swedes we have had have been fair to middling to superb, and the scouting has ramped up a tad since Pedro seemingly no longer has his paws on things, hopefully this latest is the biz, well done Celtic.

Celtic have a good working relationship with Elfsborg, despite the fact that we loaned them Mo (the bounce) Bangura

    That’s a good shout .

I’m hoping his club are just holding on to him until they finalise the level of European football that they will play this season .

  17. I think the goalkeeper is waiting on the qualifiers to finish before moving.

I have been told we have already submitted an offer.Great source.

Long time no post- due mainly to all the hassle circumventing enumerable adverts. However, decided to give it a go again!

Not over-enamoured with BR’s return but fits my priorities of modern, forward thinking, improves players coach and as the Celtic one wouldget my support anyway.

Not much has changed since I last posted on here😀! Big Jimmy still getting upset with fellow posters- why give a monkey’s what others think of you, especially ones you don’t know. To those commenting – do you really get upset if someone exaggerates a tale or slants it in their favour?

Turnbull v Hatate? I think Turnbull will never be in the same class as Hatate, but I wouldn’t fall out about it. Do they do the job on the day? Yes- Great; No – Shite!

Good to see long known names still going strong especially The Exilee Tim whom I had the pleasure of being in his company in Barcelona when we were humped 6-1 with Van Dyke in defence as well!

    Could have been worse😀

Anywa, May the season go well and May we all still be here when it’s finished

  19. I don’t now and never have had an ‘English Team’ – nothing against English teams or people- I support Celtic👍

Echo chamber of negativity on here now….

Zero evidence for anything but everyone is going and the sky is falling…..

Goodness me different breed on here now.

I agree with your general sentiment but I don`t think it`s a diffferent breed. I think its just the ratio of positive to negative that might have changed.

Thanks for clarifying and very sorry re your friend.

I thought it was an imposter at the wind up.

Just out of QM after some minor surgery today but seems to have gone ok.

  22. I see sky are quick to run early and unconfirmed total speculation about Abada leaving but saying nothing about our potential new Swedish signing which seems robust and credible.

Hope you are right, going by our latest recruits I am hopeful.

The Yang fella I really do have high hopes for, the other fella Kwon will take longer but he will come good.

  25. TET…you can be sure up to point…but there’s too many variables in play for you to say fact…and that’s a fact ;-))

He’s managed his career smartly….and moved when he’s felt it’s best for him, in the same vein as Matt O…so there’s every reason to be optimisttic…but there’s no certainty
