Res 12 donors feed 650 kids in Liberia with Mary’s Meals

160

In May this year Celtic fans advertised in the Swiss media issues regarding the licensing of Rangers FC for Uefa competitions in 2011, when the club was in the hands of Craig Whyte.  The suspicion was that Mr Whyte made less than full and frank submissions to football authorities about his club’s tax and other financial affairs.

Perhaps as a consequence, two weeks later Uefa responded to a letter from Celtic shareholders on the matter, in which they confirmed the status of the “new club/new company” operating out of Ibrox.  Dialogue continues on the matter, which is why we have heard little directly from the anyone on the subject.

Hundreds of subscribers stepped forward to fund the advertising campaign, so much so that it returned a surplus of £7900, which was earmarked for Mary’s Meals.

Celtic Quick News has funded four school kitchens for Mary’s Meals in Malawi, but when we approached them this time, they asked if we could buy food instead.

That money is now with Mary’s Meals and will be used to feed primary children at two schools in Liberia for the next 12 months.  The Light of Islam Primary has a population of 350 and Siafa Dugba Public School has 300 pupils.

Mary’s Meals were delighted with the donation, commenting:

“We’re very grateful to Celtic supporters for this generous donation, which will be used to provide nutritious meals to 650 children every day they attend school in Liberia.

“Many children receiving Mary’s Meals in Liberia have been affected by the aftermath of the country’s civil war and, more recently, the devastating Ebola outbreak. A daily meal in a place of education provides stability for these children and encourages them to come to school and learn.

“On behalf of all the children attending Light of Islam Primary School and Siafa Dugba Public School in Liberia, thank you for this continued backing from Celtic supporters.”

Putting food on the table at a place of education for chronically deprived children is one of the most productive uses of aid we have today.  Not only does a nourishing meal build fitter, healthier, children, who are more capable of fighting disease, Mary’s Meals see a pickup of school attendance of 30% after their meals start.

This means kids who would not previously had access to schooling for a variety of reason, now get the basic primary education most of the world takes for granted.

So there’s a second wave of benefit in feeding children living in subsistence communities at school.  Not only are they stronger and healthier, learning to read and write, they will have better life opportunities as adults.  Primary education provides a lifetime’s worth of benefit.

Mary’s Meals are a remarkably efficient charity.  93% of funds raised reaches the end recipient.  They work in communities which are not only in need, but where their work can be of genuine benefit.

Liberia has had peace for a decade now.  It recently became the first African country to elect a female president, and established a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help it emerge from a cycle of civil war, the most recent of which cost 300,000 souls.  As a consequence, it is fertile ground to build the structures of state, education and life.

Ebola closed the country’s borders two years ago, which is a huge deal for a nation which imports 90% of its staple foods, and caused already-chronic childhood malnutrition rates to rise beyond the calculation.

Food is already on the table at Light of Islam and Siafa Dugba schools.  Mary’s Meals will send us photos in due course.  A sign will be erected at each location to mark your donation, the impact of which, we’ll never know.

Thank you, you are just wonderful.  But you knew that anyway.

At a Deidco Sevco – Alloa league game at Ibrox a couple of seasons ago there was a youtube vid taken of a Hun running down to top railing in top tier at the crumbling Dome and singing ‘Same Old Alloa, always cheating’. if you copy & paste that phrase in to you tube you will find the clip.

Most Celtic supporters are only interested in Celtic. What was the point of your post?

  5. I read with interest the debate about a new south stand, it’s a conversation I’ve had with WC a few times, and it’s great to see work that has went into the number crunching to support or shoot down the notion that the Auld Lady Of the East End Paradise needs a refit.

This season we are at SB sales akin to 2001/02. We are handcuffed by UEFA rules regarding selling anymore. We are not selling out match day tickets (due to the price I feel) and I think the SB sales are a spike and will drop over the next few seasons.

I said to WC if CP was being built today no way would we bow to Fergus’s inner afflatus and build a 60,000 seater stadium unless we were being offered a road out of dodge and that those extra seats would see us compete and gain that inch in a photo finish.

For that to happen, like Liverpool’s recent refit, the majority of seats in any refit would need to end up as corporate packages, which is where there is a massive mark up. The Corporate facilities at CP are bursting like an old cheap bladdered leather football. You can see a bubble of pink peering through the stitching.

The SB demographic is milked. Not enough disposable income. Corporate? Well, that can be milked to the cows come home…..

Yes it was a surprise that the BBC suddenly ,after 2 years of Yemen being bombed by Saudi ,decided to give this conflict some coverage.

Sadly our goverment sells the bombs to close ally Saudi Arabia that enable them to blitz this impoverished land. The UK is shamfully supporting them .

Why its in the UKs interest for such a poor country to be devestated I dont know.

Just another strand of our governments immoral actions in the Middle East.

  12. Gooooood afternoon CQN

Winning Captains and CQN readers, and those in support of Res12, what a result :-)

And will not see reported in MSM, as we use the money to support a needy cause, and not a new club which desperately needs funds

    Hail Hail

Now Battered Bunnet, you raised the point on Celtic being cash rich over next couple of seasons, I asked Praceapta for an estimate on costs

I have no idea how you could reach a figure of £80m pound for this – new St Mirren park cost under £5m ? How could 1 stand cost £80m ?

We read often of fans in the South Stand ( main stand) complain of facilities and condition – it needs a major makeover and upgrade

Personal opinion, and as outlined earlier by Giggsy, upgrade and increase hospitality sections – I would personally look at transferring those from North Stand posh seats over to main stand, then open up north stand lounges to fans aka kerrydale lounge – you could add a cost to standard season tickets for use here – the affiliation used to have access to a lounge and from memory charged £3 to cover costs.

I sit in a seat right in front of the leather seats in north stand, I don’t drink but would be willing to pay and extra £100 – 200 to get access for a tea, pie etc prior to a game, I will no pat the current £900 difference for access

So we will up Sputh stand with those prepared to pay for the hospitality and open up all other lounges to fans prepared to pay for a drink or such at gams ?

One other thing, we need to look at improving then biro mention we have for football

I have stated before, I believe seats are too small, the population in general is getting bigger in size, we should change all seats in stadium with a better standard and slightly bigger in space, say 2″, improve comfort throughout

I also still get wet when raining in my seat, and I am pretty high up in North Stand, this needs addressed, me a new south stand with extended, and you can get clear panels for such, covering to protect fans from elements

Would also add solar panels so Celtic can fund all its own power use

Many ways of increasing revenue by thinking out the box, and moving football stadia into the 21s century

Incidentally on my recent trip to Toronto and previous, I seen the hotel concept for hospitality rooms as originally spoken in prospectus from Fergus

So how about a Cafe in the hotel as well :-)

Ps – we do need to offer some welcoming facilities to our far travelling fans etc

    Hail Hail

  13. COWIEBHOY on 21ST SEPTEMBER 2016 2:18 PM

Celtic Park is surprisingly roomy compared to many (admittedly older) stadiums I’ve been in.

You realise as well that increasing the seat size would dramatically reduce the capacity?

  14. The man that has been arrested for the Dummies. Get a decent lawyer. It’s a joke, anyone else saying it offensive. Is just stirring it.also the Bisies weren’t long in arresting the celtic fan.yet there hundreds of hun fans, clearly visible, and yet no arrests.you know what celtic fan tell.the police to take a hike.

  15. Weeminger, not if we add capacity back into a new South Stand, which would then increase capacity

    Let’s go for 67 000 :-)

Incidentally this spell check is doing manutin

How about a new south stand which could also host additional functions, ie concerts etc, without impacting on pitch ?

I see Elton John being advertised for excelsior stadium, which will need the pitch

Last year I saw Tom Jones at Falkirk stadium

Need some creative thinking to increase revenues, and not just match day

    Hail Hail

  16. Yes, The Affiliation did have it’s own lounge for 3 seasons before it was crudely ended by the creation of the Kerrydale Bar. They even stole the singer! Yes, it was a members only lounge and was £40 a pass per season and all member CSC were offered passes at the start of the season.

Still a lot of bad blood over the axing and something that comes up at every affiliation meeting with the club. A lot of members have never set foot in the Kerrydale because of the way the club handled the whole thing….

  17. Timbhoy, come on. Not a very funny joke, but a horrible provocative gesture that will hinder us for decades.

I thought the arithmetic was pretty straightforward: 27000 seats x £3000.

The figure of £3K per seat construction cost, as I described, depends largely on the spec and the engineering challenge, and draws on the costs of a pretty wide number of stadia completed in the past 10 years. £3K is mid-range.

New St Mirren Park cost £1000 per seat. K Park East Kilbride cost £500. You get what you pay for.

Likelihood is that because there’s no land purchase, the cost of a new stand at Celtic Park could be brought in lower than this, but factor demolition costs and lost revenue during the build, and also the likelihood that the spec would be considerably higher than a budget build.

Praecepta’s yer man though for all things engineering.

We all know that every day of the week has a Y in it.

Which day of the week has three of them?

  21. It is ironic that on the day Paul posts about how the remaining funds on the Res 12 initiatives from earlier in the year has been used, a prominent Celtic blogger and published author, Paul Larkin, has revealed that he has received a Police warning concerning a threat to his life.

There was significant ‘hassle’ surrounding the Res 12 work and it was sinister to say the least.

There was one nutter who tweeted over 150 times in one day on Res 12, who later claimed that a Res 12 person had reported Paul to the police as he couldn’t account for this money. This was of course part of the threats, intimidation and lies surrounding Res 12. There are people out there, probably being paid, who want to undermine it and will use any dark art to achieve their goals – legal or otherwise.

You have to have just a little bit of sympathy for the MSM pack who are s*it scared to write about any of this. This is why they ignored the Offshore Tax Report story, dissed the idea that UEFA had sent a letter confirming that the current Ibrox club.company is new and so on.

Paul Larkin has said he is going to continue doing what he does, more power to his elbow. He deserves enhanced support from us all.

And on places like this, on Celtic Quick News, there is a chance that the truth will continue to be told.
