Rest precious limbs at Tannadice

608

Tomorrow is match day 5 of a 38 game Scottish Premiership league programme, and although there’s a possibility we may find ourselves five points adrift, the result from Tannadice will have absolutely no bearing on our season.

Celtic must weigh up the needs of squad fitness for the next four days, concluding with the visit to Malmo on Tuesday. We have some precious limbs attached to Virgil, Scott, Stefan (J) and most of all, Sugar Ray Griffiths. I strongly recommend all are rested tomorrow. The consequences of any of these players being injured for Tuesday is not worth contemplating.

It was considerably reassuring that Qarabag, who Celtic eliminated in the last round of the Champions League, won away at Young Boys of Berne last night. Any team winning in Switzerland have earned respect.

It was just as reassuring that Malmo’s last round opponents, Salzburg, went down 2-0 to Dinamo in Minsk. It’s difficult to determine comparative strengths this early in the season, but some people may have overestimated Salzburg and underestimated Qarabag,

We’ll find out on Tuesday.

Well done to all concerned with the Jock Stein Charity Match, which takes place on Sunday, 6 September, at East End Park, Dunfermline, in aid of Celtic Foundation and Pars’ Foundation. Alan Stubbs, who will be wearing the hoops one more time, said, “The thing about Celtic is that it’s a fantastic club, both when you’re there and when you’re not, and that’s a testament to the fans”.

Best of luck for the season, Alan.

British Champion boxer and Celtic fan, Scotty Cardle, is also playing, as is X-Men star, James McAvoy. Details here.

Some of the stuff since since Wednesday has been incredible. I’m fully understanding of supporters having their favourites and also those they’re not so keen on but some of the stuff has bordered on vitriolic.

Their second goal was a ‘dull yin’ make no mistake, but…..we won!

  4. Hi, I hope Ronnie learned his lesson last year playing a second 11. Bad idea. Play our strongest team. IMHO. HH

Well said and probably needed said.

The almost constant criticism of some of the players is way over the top.

Some of the phrases to describe them is very poor.

No player reaches the level these guys have without having a lot of ability, obviously some have more than others and these will be the ones to progress to another level.

  6. Now im off to check how many of Cqners have had their details published by the Ashley Maddison hackers….Be Afraid…..

  7. Sorry Sips

    Three contributory factors….

    I am pretty deef

I’d seen you at half time so couldn’t conceive of being so blessed as to see you again within the hour.

My heid was ringing and I probably had mild concussion after throwing my head and oaths heavenwards with great violence in the 95th minute.

It’s a wonder the wee mhan doesn’t think our erstwhile player is called ‘f&&&in Berget’ cos I said it over and over!

A bit like most on here did when he played for us!

  8. Not read back but picking up on the educated one’s post.

In a nutshell we did indeed win. Malmo didn’t fill me with dread, yes they scored two goals down to poor defending. However, we scored three in response.

We go to Malmo knowing that if we win or draw, we are through. Lose, which I am confident that we won’t we are out…got be in it to win it and we are most certainly in it.

We need to get behind the Team. And I will tell you this, the Malmo Players and their Manager have given RD and the Players all the incentive they need.

    As ever…

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  9. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

A good chance to see Paul McMullen in action for St Mirren tonight against Greenock Morton.

He’s just been clattered after a good run.

  10. Morton v St mirin

Good save from langfield. I always liked him in goal.

Great to see the easdales at cappielaw.

Now wouldn’t it be funny if they invested as much into a fitba club this season as they did last.

I think our ex player, Denny Johnstone, is up front for Morton tonight.

I don’t know if he’s on loan there or not.

Some of the St Mirren fans wearing protective masks. They think they might catch an infection in Greenock.

  15. I posted the other night that we would only concede if we made silly mistakes, we did, cut them out and we will qualify.

On the subject of resting players.

Now my memory ain’t the may west, it’s feckin awful if the truth be known, but I seem to recall back in the day when things were in black and white, in the main we played one game a week, we didn’t have the amount of games we have today, so resting players may not be a bad thing.

The amount of cash riding on the game next week is for us staggering, and to risk it is not worth it imo.

    I stand to be corrected.

  19. I watched THAT MATCH again last night and I thought GMS came in for some unfair criticsm. The lad never lost possession and indeed beat his man on several occasions. He did ok.

  20. Away tomorrow for a couple of weeks in the sun.

Anybody know where I might see the fitba in (Puerto de) Soller in Majorca.

    Thanks in advance

  22. I said this earlier, but I like repeating myself…

On the domestic front we visit places like pittodrie and tyncastle, and in doing so the expectation and mentality remains as ever, to win the football match.

Going to Sweden must be treated no differently. We go with the mentality, to play to win. And if we take that approach, our outcome will be positive.

We can’t sit in and defend for 90 minutes, expecting a 0-0 draw, because it just won’t happen. Malmo are entirely different to Quarabag in style. They will pose questions purely by being direct. Balls in to corners, balls over the head of our defenders. Get us turning.

We must look to control the flow of the game, and must have intent to get forward and score.

  23. Tet,

But do you not think it’s ALWAYS mistakes we concede from these days?

I can’t remember the last one we lost that wasn’t deemed a blooper.

We can’t be the only team in the world that only concedes from mistakes or is it more the case that every goal scored in football is technically a mistake?

rest players and risk being 5 points off the top,did we not go through this piss last season,

strongest possible team, people are paying a lot of money,to watch tomorrow,i expect a strong team and a big win.

  25. Saint Stivs………………sometimes you tend not to notice these things when your nerves are almost at breaking point. until you watch it later in a state of relaxation…………..you know the story.

  26. Just seen this one

MACCABI TEL AVIV are preparing to launch a £1.5million bid for Celtic’s struggling striker Stefan Scepovic. The Israeli champions’ new Serbian coach Slavisa Jokanovic is eyeing a swoop for his compatriot who has been frozen out by Ronny Deila, who paid £2.3million for him from Sporting Gijon last summer.

Celtic Quick News broke the news on Tuesday that Scepovic was being watched by Spanish trio Real Valladolid, Getafe and his former side Gijon.

But Maccabi are ready to jump to the head of the queue for the misfiring marksman who scored only six goals in 25 appearances for the Hoops last season.

The Israeli outfit have big plans that are being funded by wealthy Canadian owner Mitch Goldhar.Having moved to the brink of the Champions League group stage with a 2-2 draw at Basel in the first leg of their play-off, signings are set to be made and Scepovic is on their radar.

Jokanovic, who led Watford to promotion to the English top flight before his summer sacking, is putting his own stamp on Maccabi and is aware of his Scepovic’s situation with the SPFL champions.

  27. GeordieM

I said silly mistakes, mistakes that are caused by say, the lack of concentration, it’s been a while since we conceded to a wonder goal.

Efe got the brunt of the flack the other night, yet he wasn’t at fault for the first goal, as he wasn’t on the park, didn’t stop some mind you.

And yes, I suppose all goals are mistakes, and should be preventable, how boring would that be :-)

  28. To rest or not to rest, That is the question…..

I say rest….And i Dunno how Morton aint in Front…St mirren dog poor
