Result achieved for Celtic but Danny Lennon will see promise for Saturday

903

It’s difficult to analyse Celtic’s performance last night.  For much of the game the players were clearly enjoying themselves and should have been rewarded with more goals, but Dunfermline were incredibly porous in central midfield.  Ki and Commons were able to stage a passing master-class which was pleasing on the eye.

The fact that the deluge of goals didn’t come is not particularly concerning.  Celtic don’t make a habit of profligacy in front of goals, making chances is more of a problem, so it would be a mistake to read too much into one game.

While Dunfermline were out of the contest for most of the evening they also retained two strikers, something we seldom see from SPL visitors at Celtic Park, so that fact that they were able to construct an attempt at goal five minutes from time was not surprising.

Celtic got what they needed from the game but Danny Lennon, who brings St Mirren to Celtic Park on Saturday, will also have seen enough to let him form a decent game-plan, especially if Celtic play a 4-4-2 with two wingers, as they finished the game yesterday.

Time for a united front.Play smart, get the job done then sort any divisions within.

I agree entirely with the sentiments expressed.

I am 100% convinced however that the real hope of the CELTIC PLC is that we at least win the SPL title, possibly a double and who knows a treble.

My fear however is that the joy that ensues within the Celtic support will be used as a distraction to give the hun our integral business partner a resuscitating Old Firm kiss of life.

  7. SONE ALUKO last night clinched his dream move to Rangers after agreeing to pay Aberdeen almost £200,000 out of his own pocket over the next two and a half years.

The 22-year-old winger penned an initial six-month deal with the SPL champions yesterday and now hopes to use the rest of the season to trigger a further two-year contract.

But Aluko’s advisers then revealed how the Nigerian and his parents had to scramble together a lump sum of more than £50,000 to pay off his former Pittodrie bosses and stop them from blocking the move in a legal row over compensation they claim they are due.

As part of the astonishing agreement, Aluko – who knocked back an 11th-hour offer from Championship side Watford – has also agreed to stump up around a further £150,000 in monthly instalments straight out of his Rangers pay packet.

And speaking in a stunning exclusive interview with Record Sport last night, the youngster said: “The way I see it is what I have done here is invest in my own future.

“If this move works out the way I hope it will then I will go on to have a very good career and I’ll make the money back somewhere along the line.

“I did have other offers and I could have chosen a more comfortable way of doing things. I could have gone done a more normal route.

“But this is Rangers. It’s a huge club, on a huge stage and the chance may never have come around again.

“I wouldn’t have made these kind of sacrifices for just any club.

“However, this club will give me the chance to show what I can do.

“You could say that I have taken a gamble on myself here.

“But I know it’s a good gamble and even now, so soon after signing, I have a really good feeling about it. I already know that I have done the right thing.”

Aluko and his camp had considered mounting a legal challenge to fight former club Aberdeen’s claim that they were owed a bumper pay out for contributing to his development.

But the player feared any delay in the courtroom might scupper his chances of sealing a deal with Ally McCoist’s side.

It’s also understood that Watford were actually willing to meet Aberdeen’s cash demands in full.

However, Aluko turned the English side down flat and instead set about rasing the cash he needed to buy his way into Ibrox.

The unprecedented deal was then thrashed out late on Wednesday night before Aluko hopped into a car to complete a gruelling 600-mile round trip.

He drove to his Midlands home to pick up belongings then returned to Glasgow yesterday at lunchtime to undergo a medical and sign on the dotted line.

Last night his adviser Alan Love said: “Rangers have not parted with a coin.

“Sone and his family have put money up and, as the agents, we also put our commission into the pot. Morally, we could not do anything else.

“A proportion of the fee has been paid up front and the rest will come out of Sone’s wages and appearance money over the next two years. It tells you something about this boy’s dedication and desire to succeed.

“He has paid his ticket to go to Rangers. I can’t think of any other player in this day and age who would have made this kind of sacrifice. But it’s not about money – it’s all about his career.”

Aluko started his career with Birmingham before moving north to Pittodrie in a £50,000 deal in 2008.

The winger left in the summer when his contract expired but the Dons believed they were due a fee from his next team for helping to develop the player.

And the Pittodrie club yesterday said the terms agreed with Gers involved the “receipt of training compensation, potential contingent payments and a sell-on clause”.

Chief executive Duncan Fraser told the club’s website: “The club has been adamant that the principles under which an agreement could be reached involved the recognition of our right to training compensation and that we would only deal with another club directly.

“Once Rangers had decided that they would make a contract offer, we were then able to agree a mutually acceptable position.”

Will Chief executive Duncan Fraser be as principled when it comes to voting for a Newco Rangers to assume Rangers history and SPL position ? Sport record is almost certain that those principles will not be adhered to so strenuously .

Aluko must have written in some easy ‘get out’ clauses..I think he’ll do well and certainly got a lot of belief in himself.. £200k out of his own pocket is a lot for a 22 yr old who has yet to make any real money out of the game.

Sone Aluko was released by Aberdeen at the end of the season. He has been a free agent for almost six months.

So when you say “The Huns have done well” is this on the basis that Aluko and his family have made the compensation payment Rangers couldn’t afford?

  15. The Lizard King on

With the signing of the wonderful benevolent one, who is proof positive that a professional footballer will stop at nothing to play for the mighty Rainjurs, the Rangers Dodgers FC first team squad now consists of 25 players:

    G

    McGregor

    Alexander

    D

    Broadfoot

    Alouko

    F

    Lafferty

    Jelavic

    Healy

Those players have been signed for around £24.2m in transfer fees. The more important ones (McGregor, Whittaker, Naismith, Davis, Jelavic) are all on long, presumably lucrative, contracts. Whyte has stated their wage bill has risen on his watch.

The Celtic first team squad consists of 26 players if you count the new guy Lustig:

    G

    Zaliuska

    Forster

    D

    M. Wilson

    Mulgrew

    Du-Ri

    Izaguirre

    Matthews

    El Khaddouri

    Blackman

    Rustig

    Loovens

    Rogne

    Majstorovic

    K. Wilson

    Wanyama

    M

    Brown

    McCourt

    Ki Sung-Yeong

    Ledley

    Kayal

    Forrest

    Commons

    F

    Stokes

    Samaras

    Hooper

    Bangura

Those players have been signed for around £19.8m in transfer fees. The one on the highest wage (Brown) may not be here much longer. (We do have another 6 players of first team age and experience out on loan).

May those who lament the failure of Celtic to beat a financially moribund Rangers please remember that on the park, where it matters, we continue to be out-spent.

Thank you. This has to be the most overlooked fact in Scottish football. Rangers may be up a certain financial creek off the pitch but that has yet to filter through to their playing squad. It is a shocking reflection on the administration of Scottish football that they can pay guys like Lafferty, Jelavic and Davies the money they must be on and still have creditors hound them for money on the steps of the court.

And the “worst Rangers team ever” stuff we regularly hear is nonsense. The ugly ones last season outscored every one of Smith’s 9 in a row teams in terms of points and they outspent the rest of the league by even more back then. Let me be clear, the current uglies side are no world beaters and we should be a lot closer to them than we are right now. But that is just an example of how financially doped this league is right now.

  26. Has anyone had any experience of having their bank account cleared out by fraudsters?

My wife and I have a joint account we use for mortgate, rates, car payments etc. We each have a standing order from our own accounts to put half of our wages into this account. When we went to look at it last night the online banking wouldn’t work so phoned the bank to see what the story was. They said they had blocked it due to a withdrawl that was made last week of £4k which cleared all the money in it and put us £2k ish overdrawn. When they asked us questions, the agreed that it was most likely fraud and agreed to refund the money within 72 hours. The problem is direct debits and standing orders that might be paid before the money is back might bounce.

Has anyone had any expeirence of anything similar and if so, were you able to get the money back. the most galling thing in this is that the bank allowed this withdrawl to go well overdrawn without even contacting us before hand to see if it was us who made the transaction.

We will win the league. I have no doubt about that and it’s not based on delusion or anything that happens off-the-pitch with the Huns.

Celtic have stuttered for much of the season, but this is down to several factors; having to continually rotate the defence because of injuries and suspensions, the absence of three key players in Izaguirre, Commons and Brown – who have all been performing very well under Neil Lennon, and the loss of form from others.

Despite this we are closing the gap at an impressive rate. Rangers have yet to drop any points on the road, and they will do before they come to Celtic Park. We are finally showing signs of consistency. It’s down to us. There is still over half of the season remaining.

Has it occurred to you that one of the reason’s we’re not in a similar position to Rangers in having to get players to pay their own release fees is because of our CEO, because that’s nothing to do with the impending tax case and everything to do with how the club is run.

  29. CultsBhoy –

    You have a point mate.

I know next to nothing about Aluko, so cannot comment, which means I won’t come on here bad-mouthing the guy just because he has signed for the Huns. If he has paid a lot of money out of his own pocket to secure his dream move, then he is to be lauded rather than ridiculed.

Do we have to hate EVERYBODY who has anything to do with Rangers, even before he has kicked a ball? Are we, as football fans, not allowed to admire and respect players like Laudrup, Henderson and Baxter?

We ridicule players who turn their backs on an offer from Celtic and accuse them of being “in it for the money” – Ginola, Campbell, Bellamy etc – yet here we are mocking a guy for spending his own money to get the move he wants.

If and when he starts behaving “Laffertyesque” I will be first in line to put the boot in, but until then, give the lad a break and let’s show some class as a support.

  30. Craiginho says:

Absolutely. And to spell it our rather, the squad Rangers have accumulated and which has won 3 titles has pitched them to the brink of financial Armageddon. Yet that team remains on the park.

There is till an interesting debate to be had about whether Celtic has bought players wisely. However, as a poster earlier stated comparing the Celtic and Man Utd squads from the game 5 seasons ago, there are huge benefits in having a settled squad with healthy but limited turn over. Our turn over has been unsustainable – 86 players in the last 4 seasons. Partly this is due to lack of success trying to compete with a financially doped opponent (change in managers etc). How do you compete successfully against someone who would literally rather kill themselves than risk having you win?
