Result gives platform for progress

1761

Last night’s win didn’t look on the cards until the opening goal; Astra were passing the ball better and creating as many chances as Celtic.  It looked like the game we expected – without Commons or Guidetti. However, we find ourselves top of the group with 7 points from 9 at the halfway point, having recorded a draw away to top seed Salzburg.

There’s still a lot of work to do, a win away at Astra next time out in no way guarantees qualification, but we stand an excellent chance of progressing and a decent chance of topping the group.

Having thumped Ross County at the weekend there was a notion we’d turned a corner, which fed some of the frustration last night, despite the result.  What we saw was very poor passing from a disjointed team.  Players were receiving the ball in too little space, where options were already closed.  This impacted the effectiveness on Callum McGregor and Mikael Lustig in particular, but it seemed when every Celtic player looked up there wasn’t a good pass on.

This is all a consequence of change.  We look disjointed because we are disjointed.  We’re disjointed because we’re rebuilding.

The relevant questions are:

Do we need to rebuild?
Are we making progress?

Yes, we need to rebuild.  The squad, tactics, training and other processes are all going through change.  For so long we watched Celtic squads remain constant and grow old (under Martin O’Neill), or out tactics become rigid (under Martin and Gordon Strachan), to the point that we were crying out for some experimentation.

The above is seldom disputed but the question of progress is more important.  Right now Celtic need results.  They need to survive in the Europa League long enough to test and improve their passing, movement, instincts and, where necessary, squad.

Last night’s win wasn’t pretty but it was vitally important.  The next challenge for this team is also important; we need to go to Romania and put on the kind of performance we did in Salzburg.  If we can do that, we’ll have earned a platform to build on.

Caesar & the Assassin, the accounts of Billy McNeill and Davie Hay as Celtic managers, is available below.

Billy and Davie will both sign the early orders we get to them, more here.

  4. beatbhoy,

The wee man wasn’t taken to with some of our support and at times the style he had us playing wasn’t always to my liking.

He is certainly doing a grand job with Scotland.

  5. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

From the follow follow extract earlier re a possible demo at Ibrox – I hope it’s not a damp squid. That gave me a chortle.

Our main ire should not be at Ronny but those above him. We couldn’t continue with our spending in Martin’s first two seasons but has the board’s fiscal policy cost us more than we have saved?

I don’t know the answer to the above but our turnover will be down by more than £20 million which to me, and my basic grasp of economics, is down to shortsightedness and mismanagement by the PLC of our core business, the team.

The Dortmund chairman stated on the BBC website last week that get things right on the pitch, every other part of the business performs well.

I’m delighted we won last night and got our uefa coefficient up but our team has to improve sooner rather later. Management, players and fans should all be together in trying to achieve this.

  6. What is the Stars on

Starry, you object to me referring to ostriches, any one who can’t see that the manager is a disaster is in my humble opinion either clueless about football ( which the vast majority on here are not) or has their head buried in the sand. I think it’s fair comment, certainly fairer then the abuse I get for simply stating the obvious. Have a pleasant evening, it is Friday and we sshould all be able to relax

  7. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bourne about Virgil at the Hamilton goal.

He should have tackled with his left at the goal.

Virgil is still one of our better players but his immaturity in some football matters is of no use to us.

He was complacent in our last six games last season and his concentration this season could be better.

If going to Charlie Nicholas’ favourite club is what he wants, he will be going to the wrong place as Wenger’s team can’t defend Virgil’s reputation will suffer..

Naw mate my point is that is seems to me on here now that some would rather be right that see Celtic do well and it’s the reason I come on here less and less, the reason I suggested you read back was because there was some cracking stuff on here today about the fitbaw, Ronny, the living wage and not much animosity among it, just Tims talking Tim things..

I’m no for making it and everything about Celtic into an Us V Them argument, you think Ronny is a dud fair play to you you said it and you will stick by that till he is proven so or it gets better, what I’m not for is sacking the manager and turning us into Leeds Utd when our stock is already low, at the moment we’re not great but we’re still in all competitions so that in itself in my book gives the guy the right to carry on.

How easy is it to pass a ball, to move into space, there was one bit of the game last night Celtic in possession and a very large space in front of the 18 yard box, it was obvious space to run into, the pass was on, no one made the run, that worries me.

I feel the players or some of them are at it.

    ———————————————

My thoughts too mate….is Ronny teaching them’ how not to pass’?if you played like that

at a kickaboot with yir mates you’d get shiriked .

Agree with all of that he is complacent, possibly unconsciously.

I find it comical that SMSM think they know who Arsene Wenger will buy next January, and Arsenal have never replaced Tony Adams, who was a very different type of CB. The closest they came was with Thomas Vermaelen

  18. As for Ally McCoist, he’s been on record to express his support for Graham Wallace, and has close ties with Dave King stretching back to the time when Sir David Murray ran Rangers. The isolation of Wallace, and the waning influence of King’s offer, could place the Rangers manager in a complex predicament.

Though in hospital and knowing she wasn’t coming home -she still wanted my brother and I to go to the game!

  24. Gordon Strachan…..

He used to say something along the lines of……he liked players who were brave on the ball.

How badly lacking were we in that quality last night?

I am still perplexed at how poor some players were and normally if enough of the team play as they should, they can carry these guys and help them to get a grip but it seemed like they were all taking turns to just kick the ball anywhere.

I owe Ronny Delia an apology(not that he would hear what i said or the apology)for having a moan about him during the game last night.

His mind must have been bogling at what he was watching.

How can a manager legislate for so many players not playing well?

    Where does he start?

I think Ronny did well with his substitutions and id say those decisions changed the game…..although we still managed to make a game of it after going 2 up!

Still…..it was 3 points and there have been nights that we have played well and came away with nothing so they are gratefully accepted!

  26. croppybhoy @ 18.40hrs,

Apologies for the late reply, Mrs Greenpinata in one of her moods about using the phone in the Chinese restaurant.

I think the managers budget would not differ too much no matter who the manager was. We are the only team to spend any money in the transfer window and we do not have any competitor domestically to justify marquis signings.

We can debate about “Rangers / Sevco” and the fact that they are deid, but when they were alive we had to spend to compete and players were sold the games appeal to sign.

In fact we judged our players ( and still do ) on their ability to perform in these games.

I am not saying I want them back, on the contrary, but IMO our edge has gone.

As for loan signings, it is no coincidence that we deal with Man City. Man City and Chelsea have something like >30 players out on loan. This is to work round the FFP rules and this will only increase until the rules are changed. I believe there are currently two challenges in play and the only people I can see benefiting are accountants and lawyers, certainly not clubs in smaller leagues where our income is much less.
