Last night’s win didn’t look on the cards until the opening goal; Astra were passing the ball better and creating as many chances as Celtic. It looked like the game we expected – without Commons or Guidetti. However, we find ourselves top of the group with 7 points from 9 at the halfway point, having recorded a draw away to top seed Salzburg.
There’s still a lot of work to do, a win away at Astra next time out in no way guarantees qualification, but we stand an excellent chance of progressing and a decent chance of topping the group.
Having thumped Ross County at the weekend there was a notion we’d turned a corner, which fed some of the frustration last night, despite the result. What we saw was very poor passing from a disjointed team. Players were receiving the ball in too little space, where options were already closed. This impacted the effectiveness on Callum McGregor and Mikael Lustig in particular, but it seemed when every Celtic player looked up there wasn’t a good pass on.
This is all a consequence of change. We look disjointed because we are disjointed. We’re disjointed because we’re rebuilding.
The relevant questions are:
Do we need to rebuild?
Are we making progress?
Yes, we need to rebuild. The squad, tactics, training and other processes are all going through change. For so long we watched Celtic squads remain constant and grow old (under Martin O’Neill), or out tactics become rigid (under Martin and Gordon Strachan), to the point that we were crying out for some experimentation.
The above is seldom disputed but the question of progress is more important. Right now Celtic need results. They need to survive in the Europa League long enough to test and improve their passing, movement, instincts and, where necessary, squad.
Last night’s win wasn’t pretty but it was vitally important. The next challenge for this team is also important; we need to go to Romania and put on the kind of performance we did in Salzburg. If we can do that, we’ll have earned a platform to build on.
Caesar & the Assassin, the accounts of Billy McNeill and Davie Hay as Celtic managers, is available below.
Billy and Davie will both sign the early orders we get to them, more here.

On the one year that the Poppy Appeal has chosen an anti war, non triumphalist stance, it’s flagship song being Green Fields of France, it would appear IMO to be inopportune to suggest an alternative.
Your white Poppy message is incorporated in the Poppy Appeal.
Just do the right thing.
Watch the video, listen to the words of the song.
Wear or don’t wear a poppy. It is your choice but do not create a division where, for the first time in years, there is not one.

I’m happy to commit to taking ten white poppies for Shay, please.
I’ll do an email for details.
Sleep in peace, Cellts everywhere.
Evening everyone,
Apologies for the lack of fantasy football updates the last few weeks, due to a rather nasty kidney infection that hospitalised me for the last 3 weeks I was otherwise engaged. I’ll update this Tuesday since I’m back to normal.
Have not seen much of the Tic, managed to see about 20 minutes of Thursday’s match, which looked terrible, so would appreciate a wee state of affairs post from anyone willing to post.
In the meantime I’m away to catch up on the articles.

An tearmann..as PLAYERS for our club i admired mc neil auld and mcavennie…as for their political assertions…i have no time for them…i grew up in Possil..about say half a mile from auld and about a same maybe abit more from mcavennie.
Im proud to say my district voted YES ..the point i was making (andmy head aint done in)..is that i found it strange that no Celtic player .past or present came out supporting YES….giving the %in the referendum and the amount of players we have had or have i found that odd…

Weefra, let’s hope we take advanyage of Accies & United both slipping up today. Tomorrow is a great oppurtunity to do so. We know what has to be done so let’s do it.
Macjay, most Catholic schools in Scotland & England have non-catholic pupils.
One of my nephews went to Corpus Christi primary school in Knightswood. 40% of the pupils were not Catholics. Such was the demand for placements at the school, my sister had to fight to get him into it despite her family being practising Catholics.
A friend originally from Belfast who lived in London for years, told me some Catholic schools had a higher roll of other Christians & religions than Catholics.
St Albert’s primary in Pollokshields had less than ten per cent Catholics in the school rolL a number of years back.
A muslim I work with sends his two children to Our Lady of the Mission in Thornliebank.
Segregation in American schools was ended but there is still racism. Making schools non-denominational isn’t the answer. Attitudes in the home can have a bigger effect on how sectarian attitudes develope.

Your red face was a standout, among the pale faced Bankies tonight. Thanks for your company. Magic night! :)
CRC,
Don’t see why you should be surprised.
It has nothing to do with United Kingdom v Independence.
Rather you can dispute the relevance of militaristic displays and triumphalist celebration as we have witnessed over the past few years.
However, my point is, when the Poppy Appeal people choose to to use a pacifist, anti war song like Green Fields Of France, with accompanying video, as their flagship, then it is IMO, futile, indeed counter productive, to set up an alternative medium, your White Poppy , as it only goes to prove, to those want to believe, that we, Celtic supporters are as a group, anti British or whatever.
Now who does that favour?

I will do my best to be there tomorrow, commitments allowing, I’ve not missed a game so far this season, home games I mean. I would like to think our season is now on track. Like you, I believe we will now kick on, win our games on hand, and be top dogs at the end of the year. KTF.

You said ” Wear at poppy or not” Surely that is a division?
And has this not been used as a tool against Celtic fans over the years to devise?
This is what you accuse me of?
The white poppy has been about for years.
So it its a question of choice? Red, white or nothing?
White helps Shay.
You choose

Do all the people calling for Celtic to pay the living wage instead of just the minimum wage call their local takeaway and confirm the status of all employees before they order? Do you check the pay scale of the bus driver taking you to work? Have you confirmed your taxi driver is fully tax compliant? If not why not?
I agree that all employers should pay the living wage. I do not agree with Celtic being forced to adhere to a higher standard of conduct than every other organisation on the planet. Celtic do a lot of good work through the Charity Foundation but why do we require them to do something that is a function of Government.
Instead of hassling Celtic about the Living Wage why not contact your MSP and MP, they where very vocal about social issues a few weeks back.
Celtic are a football club founded on charitable issues but within hours of Br Walfrid moving on the “families” moved in to become “custodians”. Celtic’s charity ethos did not return properly until Fergus set up the Charity Foundation, that is going to fry some brain circuits.
As for Br Walfrid’s ethos guiding the club Ha, the Catholic Church has been one of the most reactionary forces preventing social change for the bulk of the last 100 years. The Catholic Church opposed free education and medical care in Ireland as it felt that this was its domain and that government interference was “communistic”. Br Walfrid turning in his grave over the living wage don’t make me laugh.

macjay1,
You have a point with the no mixed marriages, but don’t you think both sides had the same opinion?
After all, were we not the the the ones that was treated like second class citizens back then?
——————————————————————————————————————
Sorry,pal.Had to nip out.
Catholics were treated disgracefully back then.We all know that.
I believe the Church of Scotland has since apologised for it`s attitude and behaviour.
Nevertheless,I still feel sure that it was we Catholics who pressed for separate education.

The reason Corpus Christi Knightswood is so popular is it’s teachers. My 4 children attended CC. Many muslims choose it for their weans rather than the inferior Bankhead or Knightswood primary schools.

I agree the living wage is the right thing to do, I just disagree with blaming Celtic for not applying it across the board.
Pay the living wage to all not just Celtic employees. Why not demand justice from McDonalds, Debenhams, Tesco and or every other non compliant employer.
Celtic are a football club with many enemies in Scotland why should we manufacture grievances to feed our enemies?
