Results are all, even when defending

I caught a bit of Radio Scotland at halftime during the Aberdeen-Celtic game on Saturday.  Former Aberdeen captain and manager Willie Miller was scathing about the tactics deployed by Jim Goodwin.  Post-match, it felt as though Willie’s early intervention had given the rest of the media a line they were happy to run with.  I’ve been in press rooms and seen this happen.  “What’s our take?” conversations, where a strong line is agreed upon that several will get behind, providing cover for all.

Willie doesn’t need this cover, his credentials provide that, but although Aberdeen’s 88-minute attempt to secure a 0-0 draw was dire, it was certainly not a new innovation, even for Aberdeen.  What was new is the uniform post-match reaction.  Where club hero goes, media follows and many fans are easily persuaded.  Goodwin is now under more pressure than he would want to be ahead of tonight’s home fixture against Newco.

If he leaves Pittodrie tonight having taken no points from two home games and made little effort to attack, he will face serious questions.  If he parks the bus and gets a point, a local oil sheik might ask him to wear a chiffon cape.  Results are all in football.

  1. I don’t know where the 7 minutes came from.

It is clear that VAR judgements involving Rangers in their box are not judged by the same criteria as the rest of the league.

7 minutes added on , last throw of the dice for the officials .

    Well , it worked .

You called Goodwin out before their 2 goals.

For a team that defends, he couldn’t get them to defend injury time.

  4. Confirmation if you needed it that handball in the box is not a foul if you play for sevco.

Apart from that, they were utter sh1t3.

Defensively weak and only dangerous at the end when Aberdeen tired and the psychology of the game changed. They’ll get a bit of momentum from this which us annoying but it does genuinely look like papering over cracks.

  5. VAR is just another light on the corruption within scottish football. The last goal clearly hits goldsons arm – anywhere else on the pitch and its a free-kick.

  6. 4 mins added in the first half – 7mins added in the second half. Celtic got zero minutes first half and 3mins second !

Putting aside my disappointment at Aberdeens late collapse , that game proved what Ange was saying in the presser . Celtic and Sevco are two quite different teams . We are country miles ahead of them .

  8. An Amateur Coach woul he had a chaser up the park harassing them…

Goodson collects the ball outside their area and wanders up unchallenged to their box in the 94th minute …Ffs Goodwin ..You plonker…!!!

    Yip !

( Unfortunately, the Ref`s really do make a difference).

I am not aware of any var decision which has went against the hun so far. A remarkable achievement……….

The no VAR reviews saved them again, stonewall first half penalty no VAR

The World Cup Willie seven minutes added was a stick on and eventually got them out of jail , Aberdeen are marginally worse.

  12. They were not” Hand balls”.Aberdeen threw it away. Two shitty goals to lose, but I was actually waiting for it.They can’t defend. They had that mob on the rack, then fell back, and gave them all the ball.No matter,we win tomorrow night, their euphoria, short lived.

We have seen how poor they are against poor teams. On Thursday,we will still be nine points clear.

    They are a poor team.

  13. Worth remembering that Aberdeen had a much shorter recovery/preparation time before this game than did The Establishment Team.

    `night all.

  14. Really horrible from Aberdeen, two of the worst goals you’ll ever see defensively.

VAR was probably fair over the 90 minutes, the Huns could have had a penalty from what I saw.

That team isn’t making up 9 points on us.
