Results are all, even when defending

I caught a bit of Radio Scotland at halftime during the Aberdeen-Celtic game on Saturday.  Former Aberdeen captain and manager Willie Miller was scathing about the tactics deployed by Jim Goodwin.  Post-match, it felt as though Willie’s early intervention had given the rest of the media a line they were happy to run with.  I’ve been in press rooms and seen this happen.  “What’s our take?” conversations, where a strong line is agreed upon that several will get behind, providing cover for all.

Willie doesn’t need this cover, his credentials provide that, but although Aberdeen’s 88-minute attempt to secure a 0-0 draw was dire, it was certainly not a new innovation, even for Aberdeen.  What was new is the uniform post-match reaction.  Where club hero goes, media follows and many fans are easily persuaded.  Goodwin is now under more pressure than he would want to be ahead of tonight’s home fixture against Newco.

If he leaves Pittodrie tonight having taken no points from two home games and made little effort to attack, he will face serious questions.  If he parks the bus and gets a point, a local oil sheik might ask him to wear a chiffon cape.  Results are all in football.

I’m wondering if Goodwin will be getting pelters in the SMSM for his tactics last night?

    What is worse?

    Being a few minutes away from getting a draw against Celtic;

or contriving to lose a game you were winning during the final 4 minutes of injury time?

As an aside, perhaps the 7 minutes of injury time was the officials doing Beale a “favour”.

  2. The equaliser was a keeper error, it happens.

The winner was down to panic. Aberdeen piled forward to get a winner (like they did when we scored on Sat) and when the Huns got the ball back, they were out of shape and still panicking.

The only thing about the Huns that i would like to see us do more of is to play balls in the box more often when we are passing around.

They have a bit more movement but it is more about the short passes in. 50% will be cleared but is you have the opposition pinned back, you are likely to recycle. That’s why they get scrappy goals and penalties

We seem scared to knock that wee pass in to Kyogo or Giakoumakis. More direct tonight please Celtic

  3. A frustrating night last night but a six point lead with a game in hand at Celtic Park goes a long way to ease any fears.

As P67 said results are everything so the huns will be delighted. In truth, they’re muck. Morelos is a man down, Kent and Tillman anonymous for very large spells and defensively they’re a shambles.

If we’re remotely close to being the team we think we are then we should be wrapping up this league title at Ibrox.

  4. I’m hoping that big Gia gets a start tonight. If he does and, if I was a betting man, which I’m not, I would have a small flutter on him scoring a hat-trick.

    But, in Ange We Trust

It’s always nice when Sevco drop points.

So circumstances of last night’s victory clearly will have irked many on here.

Credit where it is due. Takes some motivation – fear? supremacist belief? desperation? – to win a match you’re losing at 93 minutes.

Didn’t heed the unfolding drama myself but,

having refreshed CQN in the browser at 10pm to then see 6 pages of comments,

    Suspected something dramatic happened.

Maybe Bealin’ has turned them around and they are now converting draws into narrow wins the way champions do

(“Grinding out” is the modern cliché).

    Then again,

and we lived this scenario when Tommy Burns’ team took on Walter Smith’s,

Maybe they are quite good / actually good / getting better

    But not good enough?

  6. The world cup brought two innovations in how games are officiated: the amount of injury time added on and an almost strict liability application of the law for hand ball offences in the box.

One of these innovations was evident last night, the other was conspicuous by its absence.

To the benefit of one team.

    Same as it ever was.

  7. Forgot to add; Watkins came on around 60 mins. For the whole of injury time he chased or harried no-one. Left Goldson to get forward. Shocker

BACK TO BASICS – GLASS HALF FULL on 21ST DECEMBER 2022 10:46 AM

No evidence of Beale turning them around on last night’s showing . it was a game Aberdeen should have won but contrived to lose .

Or maybe the officials saw that Aberdeen were visibly tiring and thought that 7 extra minutes might just be enough .

Think the VAR decisions last night were all ok. The point is that all of them would 100% have gone against Celtic had it been us in those positions.

Sevco under Beale look like Sevco under Gio with only Kent appearing more central but still pish.

Bealeball is a myth. The guy is a charlatan and he will be found out in the next few months.

Only VAR and the ref conspiring against us at Ibrox will prevent us getting a result there.

Big Gio up front from the start tonight. Batter them from the start.

    Glendalystonsils @ 10:46am.

I hear you and absolutely don’t doubt you.

My point is … Sevco fans need little persuading (and certainly not bodies of evidence) that corners are being turned.

In that sense, they are the easiest marks in town and the main reason Scottish printed newspapers are still in business.

Sevco might very well win 5 league games in a row at some point (equalling their best spell across September and October).

There’s a bit of a discipline required by our faithful.

Recognise the vacuous noise for what it is … and tune it out.
