Resurrection of defensive bedrock, work done in your name

980

The bedrock Celtic built their record-breaking league win on last was the defence; we went months without conceding, serious chances for opponents were written up lustily.  A large part of the summer shambles was the contrasting nature of our defensive play; Legia Warsaw scored six but they also missed a hatful.

While our results have improved in recent weeks it’s the defensive record which has shown the most marked up-lift.  We’ve conceded only twice in seven games, a ricochet against Astra and that goal against Hamilton.  By contrast, we kept only a solitary clean sheet in the seven games prior to this run.

On the surface, we looked shaky in defence for the latter parts of the game against Inverness on Saturday, but while there is still work to do, the defence can be encouraged that they are able to withstand sustained pressure – and that they can rely on their keeper, when necessary.

A couple of action points for you:

Magners are donating £18,300 to the Celtic Foundation.  The money will go to the four areas the Foundation work: Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty, in proportion to how fans nominate those areas.  To participate, tweet @MagnersUK with one of the following hashtags: #Health, #Equality, #Learning or #Poverty.

Magners have been a great help to our campaign to build a fourth CQN school kitchen for Mary’s Meals in recent weeks, so I’m keen we support and encourage this initiative.  £18,300 is a huge bonus for the Foundation, they will do great work with it.

The Foundation are full on with their Christmas strategy at the moment.  This year money will be split between those who look after the homeless and vulnerable, and individual families – identified by grassroots organisations, to help them buy gifts for kids and put a Christmas meal on the table.

This work is being done in your name, so make sure you’re aware of it.

The inaugural Foundation ladies’ lunch event, Ghirls for Good, takes place on Saturday 13 December, proceeds towards the Christmas Appeal.  If you qualify……. Book here.

    So, the super one says he wants to cancel a game against Alloa (so they can pretend they are a big team), but needs to have three players on international duty. Then – out of the blue – Lewis MacLeod gets called up. Hmmmm……..

    I haven’t listened to that mob since leaving Clydebank. Shortie is bad enough.

    My greatest frustration is us and our own using the phrase. Certainly no-one from the Club should mention it again. Former players and that includes everyone from The Lions to Darren O’dea should be helped to not pander to the fallacy but much harder to achieve as often others are calling the tune and paying for the privilege.

  9. My guess is Sally’s new bosses will tell the fud to play games on a Saturday,as they might get a bigger crowd.Pretty sure they broke the rules (no change there then),re last cancelled game.I think they only had 2 called up ,Zaluikas was injured.

    Rules?? Rules you say?? Rules furra people? The only rules they know about are the ‘britannia rules the waves.’

    Now see what you’ve done? You’ve made me waiver from my dignified and staunch decision not to post about them. Grrrrrrrr.

  11. DW-Cowdenbeath,Findlay Jimmy Nichol etc,lost 20k ,moving the game from a Saturday to tonight.Not even honour amongst thieves :}

  12. Don’t forget too Paul McBride QC wiping the floor with the SFA post the ‘shame game,’ when the SFA sentenced Ally McCoist to a 2 match touchline ban and Neil Lennon a 4 match touchline ban; NFL was already one week into a previous 4 match touchline ban. The SFA tried to enforce the sentences running consecutively rather than concurrently, Paul McBride called them the ‘laughing stock of world football’ and labelled them a ‘dysfunctional institution’. He then made it known that it was either concurrent or ‘see you in court’!

    The sentence was served concurrently. The SFA bricked it. I know you all know this; I just want to refresh your memories in the long absence of Tony Banana’s.

    Meanwhile Bougherra and Diouf, for their respective behaviour, and assualts, during – and after – the ‘shame game’ were not sentenced until the season was virtually over; and I don’t think either served a ban in Scotland.

    Just like elephants, dinosaurs have long memories too. Tonev needs a lawyer, a good one, and the unequivocal, committed, support of his club and his club’s supporters too.

    When I get back home before Christmas I’ll have a chat with you about mechanisms that could improve things if you are interested.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~++~~~~~~~~~~~
    I love the way you dissect things and point out that wrong has been done.
    I admire greatly the way that you prove that Scottish football-and Scottish society- has stood foursquare behind a bunch of cheating bassas to the detriment of our banks and our game.
    I’m also quite fond of your faith that right will prevail.
    But frankly,I’ve given up on that,and I mean no offence-I hope you know me better than that.
    For six years,you have worked diligently and accurately. I am in awe at your efforts on it,tbh.
    The truth is out there,much of it thanks to your good self.
    But it is being ignored. It’s not your fault,but we have to deal with perception and reality.
    They are that we are playing another team for the first time in three years,a game that the world views as one of the great derbies. And a lot of people canny wait.
    The truth is different,as you have proven time and again. But not enough people are listening to it.
    Its certainly been an eye opener the extent to which the media govern what we focus on.
    But now we have an alternative and others will build on what is out there and create a more truthful narrative.
    it just takes time.
  25. Strange that the repulsive Durham,wasn’t so critical of Scottish football,when he presented it on Setanta?
  26. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on
    He has a point, it will be the game that legitimises and confirms Scottish football is corrupt and dead
  27. !!Bada Bing!!
    Durham’s a tit, like most in the media, they crave stories and drama, not just in sport, my local rags are dreadful, its not journalism its utter shite. They are always negative and jump on anything that will increase sales to their ailing industry.
    I can distinctly remember Durham discussing Gary Hooper for an England call up versus Ricky Lambert, he was quoting wikipedia stats (which can be useful) as a comparison for the two players. I can remember recently viewing Gary’s thats how I knew, thats how far his knowledge stretches. I doubt he knew anything about the two individual players at all, but a quick search on wikipedia to then drum up controversy for the callers to come rushing in.
