Return of Hooper-Stokes man-love required

468

Since a couple of flat performances against Sion in the qualifying round, Celtic have reserved some of their most organised performances of the season for the Europa League, despite the lack of a victory.  Honourable defeat in Madrid followed by more-than-credible draws against Udinese and Rennes suggest there is more to this Celtic team that we see in the SPL.

It’s hard to look forward to the second half of the season and the potential for knock out football in the Europa League but if Celtic get their act together, a win tonight could go a long way towards restoring the reputation of the club, and a few players.

How Neil Lennon responds to yet more injury absentees is difficult to imagine.  I’m not expecting fluency from a makeshift defence and midfield, although Celtic Flourished in the Glasgow derby in similar circumstances on 2 January this year, but I’m hoping to see Gary Hooper and Anthony Stokes look more like a partnership.  We need both players on form and enjoying their work if any progress is to be made.

Busy day ahead but the Hearts situation is possibly worth a discussion this afternoon.  The scenario changes by the day at Ibrox but that conversation will need to wait.

I still cannot get my head around the fact that there are some on here, even today who consider playing Motherwell more important than playing Rennes in the Europa league. Motherwell? One poster even referred to Sunday’s match at Fir Park as “the big one”! Strange as it seems, Europe could still give our season the focus it has so far lacked, albeit only if we win. Any and every player who gets to wear the Celtic shirt tonight should feel privileged to get that chance, the vast majority of players playing football in Britain have never had nor ever will get that same opportunity. Let’s see if our Bhoys can take it!

I go to watch Celtic nobody else. I couldn’t give a monkeys who we play. Rangers will never disapear. They will come back but if supporters don’t want to see the team win trophies then I’m confused as to what a supporter is.

I outlined yesterday what proposals should be put in front of clubs and I believe it would benefit all clubs and make our league stronger.

3 in a row for us is minimum before the other mob get back on their feet. Would you not want to see the Hoops bag an easy 3 in a row?

  9. Speaking of “elbows” surely Gazza was the worst . And of course he was allowed to get away with most of them.

  10. I’m probably almost a week late (living in Oz and don’t watch the HMRC 11) but I just saw Naismith’s attack on Milsom.

Utter disgrace and absolutely deserved what happened to Naismith as a result. I snapped my own ACL a couple of years back and when I see players do it now I cringe as I know how painful it is.

This time, I felt nothing aside from the fact that justice was done.

    Instant Karma.

  11. Kevin,

Away hame. I have watched Celtic for too many to be put off by someone who has no idea about the use (or abuse) of commas.

Saamaras is the only player who has regularly won defensive headers in our team. He is also the only one who can hold the ball up, when our defense invariably punt it upfoield bevcause none of our midfield makes themselves available to receive it.

  12. Regarding the situation with the hearts players and non-payment of wages. At what stage, if non-payment continues, does a player become a free agent? Does FIFA have rules regarding player’s wages not being paid stating that their contract becomes null and void?

Did we not sign Bobo on a freebie because of something similar?

  17. Regarding the situation with the hearts players and non-payment of wages. At what stage, if non-payment continues, does a player become a free agent? Does FIFA have rules regarding player’s wages not being paid stating that their contract becomes null and void?

There is recourse for appeal for contract termination by the player(s) to the football authorities within existing football rules.

Alternatively under existing contract law I believe that they could just walk away although they may then have to fight a bosman style case as the football authorities frown on footballers breaking contracts that their club has already broken(!)

You can bet your bottom dollar that if the huns go into administration and, have to get rid of their players then, watch for ‘our’ stars being sold as well! IMO!

i agree and when the defence/keeper hoof it up samaras nearly always wins it and flicks it on but no-one is ahead of him to reach it for this i blame hooper/stokes/bangura

There, you will be quite happy to be named as a guy who hates somebody wearing the Hoops, happy now. It’s no wonder the team have no confidence with “fans” like you.

  20. Players are mainly attracted to Celtic for two reasons – playing for a big club and a chance to dice with the top teams in European competition.

I’m expecting our young squad with this kind of ambition to raise their game against the French and really show us what they are capable of to-night.

With the ROI big favourites to make the European finals next summer, Anthony Stokes can impress Trapattoni with some big performances in the remaining games of the Europa Cup and push Celtic into the knockout stage of the competition with goals, same applies to Gary Hooper.

    Come on the Hoops.

“Comma abuse. Never thought this blog would stoop so low.”

We all knew that it happened in the world but when it happens on our own blog, in broad daylight there is no denying that it’s within us and there is no use in kidding ourselves on that it’s somebody elses problem.

The only way we can hurt those who abuse commas is if we all stay at home and boycott the blog, all 60,000 of us.

  24. From earlier

I heard (All those years ago) that they did nearly as much damage carrying Durrant off the field with his knee jiggling about as the tackle.

Naismith’s reminds me of Gazza’s early one for Spurs – I think he’d have gone off if he’d got back up.

But my wrath is kept warm for that ger Thomson(? – Broonie’s hibee mate?) when he went down after a horrendous tackle and escaped a booking at Ibrox – that sums up the mentality that’s engendered out that way…

I was hoping to make some pertinent insightful contribution to the conversation here without it just appearing to be a string of unstructured random witterings but much to my annoyance someone has made this very very difficult if not nearly impossible in fact by using up all commas on the whole internet.
