Return to SNP sender, when one becomes six

658

I’m not taking the SPFL- face recognition plan too seriously but that’s not to say the politics behind the suggestion should be ignored. Scottish football has no hooligan problems, compared England or the Continent our game is orderly and sedate. Until recent years there was no such thing as a flare problem, and offensive signing was a thing of the past.

All that changed when the SNP government got involved in 2011. Two managers shouted at each other after a game, three Rangers players were ordered off, and First Minister, Alex Salmond decided a summit was necessary to reign in the game’s wilder elements. What utter tosh.

Three weeks later, Justice Minister, Kenny MacAskill congratulated fans on creating a great atmosphere at the League Cup Final, which was notable for the re-emergence of the previously eradicated Billy Boys song. At an instant MacAskill rebased what was acceptable behaviour at Scottish football.

Since then the game has been trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The arguments were rehearsed in the CQN comments pages and elsewhere, “They are congratulated by the Government for singing The Billy Boys and we can’t sing about nationalist politics”, or words to that effect. Songs which had disappeared from the Celtic support lexicon were soon back and remain. Incalculable damage done by two incompetent clowns.

Since then the Scottish Government and a very small number (very small indeed) of senior officers at Police Scotland decided to subject football fans to the kind of surveillance that would make a military junta of a banana republic blush.

It’s a mess. Officers on the ground readily complain in private, all other political parties pledge to repeal the Offensive Behaviour’ Act, while sheriffs line up to mock cases arising from the Act. Football has been left to pick up the pieces left from a Scottish Government created problem. The Government refuse to accept any liability, will not repeal the Act and having celebrated a new, low, standard for spectator behaviour, seem quite happy with the situation.

Scottish football was doing very well before the Government decided to rebase what is acceptable behaviour. No football authority will succeed in any endeavour if the government is working against it. What the SPFL did was make a clear, if clumsy, attempt to return the problem to sender – the newly disinterested in football Scottish Government.

When one becomes six

I’ve scoured the internet today but cannot see any complaints about Celtic’s alleged “one up front” tactics. This season hasn’t gone to plan, but we’re making an incredible number of chances and scoring a remarkable number of goals.

One up front leaves space for, what is in effect, two wingers on each flank, and an attacking mid able to work inside the box.

  1. Bobby,

Scotland’s racism is pretty specific in that it targets catholicsim and irish catholicism. Its historic roots are well known. Scotland has however denied this racism and continues to do so. It is not aired nor discussed nor admitted. Its insitutions are constructed to perpetuate it.

    And so it continues.

Have you ever applied for a passport or a driver’s license? If so, your picture is likely accessible electronically somewhere.

Years ago, I had some dealings with a company that created Facial Recognition Software (they werent the only ones, obviously). But, I had to bring myself up to speed on the issue. Even back then, I was shocked to learn how advanced and ubiqutous the technology was.

As I said, that was several years ago, and I haven’t had much in the way of dealing with that technology since then. But, I would be shocked if it hadn’t improved and spread considerably since then.

I suspect that the reason we dont hear more about it is not due to the technology, but to the costs of having people monitor and process the information. Although that was an area that they were looking to improve (having computers monitor their own data … sounds a bit like an Arnold movie) But, even if extra policing costs are involved, that doesn’t seem to be an issue in Scotland if it concerns football (Celtic?) fans.

That’s about as close to an annihilation as you’re going to see this season.

On the subject of facial recognition, it’s hardly surprising they are experimenting on football fans. In the not too distant future will be implemented everywhere oot side your front door. That together with satellite surveilance, drones and listening devices that can record your activities in the lavvy after a Saturday nicht oot. The UK alone has three CCTV cameras per citizen already. We, the population, have come to love our prison. It’s nobody’s, but everybody’s fault. We stood by and did nothing while our civil liberties burned.

    floridabhoy,

I was going to post similar, I expect the govt would only be too happy to pay for the football clubs to implement it, it would help iron out bugs and open the door for the GCC to implement with the precedent already made.

The city cameras will be used to monitor an “old firm game” in the future and the system will never be turned off again, job done.

  18. Florida Bhoy what is your source for that stat? 3 cctv cameras per person seems rather a lot, can you help. H H Hebcelt

    Agree with you there.

The state has always been at this – just the technology has changed. Strathclyde Polis CID taking photographs as you leave political discussions on Irish politics in the 80’s springs to mind.

But yeah – you only need to look at some of the posts on here to realise how scary it would be in the hands of errrrr……”normal” people. :-)

    _————————————————–

Playing with two decent strikers gives you two guys on the park who are better natural finishers. Now, if either of the two wingers was Bobby Lennox or the attacking mid was Kenny Dalglish, then fair enough.

Having flexible options with, with another decent striker would help.

  22. It amazes me when I read CQN and the petty, entrenched political bickering that goes on between educated and worldly wise Tims.

Does anyone with half a brain think that political parties are different from each other? The reds, the blues, the yellows, the greens. All just one swirl on the canvas to dupe the population that voting for one of them makes any difference.

Does anyone think that these pasty faced, sleazy individuals care one iota about you the citizen?

Time to start reading and get informed about what’s really going on. It’s all out there on the Internet. The relevant truths are not that difficult to find, and no loony conspiracy theory websites need a visit either.

  25. For the record the system used by GCC was installed by NICE Systems an Israeli multinational. I add that not in an ‘Israel Bad’ capacity but more in the ‘they have a history with surveillance techniques’ way.

  26. Paul 67, perhaps you could take a leaf out of our CP’s leadership book and keep politics out of football That is of course , except when it suits them.

The chief offenders in 2011 were not Alec Salmond or the SNP who as any politicians, Labour Tory, Lib Dem, uncle Tom Cobbley and all would have done, simple indulged in knee jerk reactions to an artificial crisis whipped up by sections of the Scottish media, the main culprit being BBC Scotland.

The above organisation, increasingly sidelined in the matter of the live broadcasting of meaningful sporting events, could not believe its luck when it fell heir to the broadcasting rights for a replayed Celtic/Rangers Scottish Cup tie.

Having unlimited access to footage of the event, BBC Scotland re run ad nauseum the handbags at twenty paces spat between McCoist and Lennon blowing it up into an incident of near global proportions.

In this, the broadcasting company was soon enthusiastically joined by the print arms of the media. And, ‘hey ho the lily oh’, politicians being politicians, found themselves believing that they had to be seen to do something. Even if it was ill thought out and unnecessary.

In ensuing years, neither Lennon or McCoist has done themselves any favours by not revealing exactly what passed between them in an incident that eventually led to an unnecessary, and apparently unfair, and sometimes unworkable change in the law of the land.

In regard to the immediate above, well informed commentators such as your self have maintained a stony silence.

As for McAskill’s reprehensible role in the League Cup Final, can you name a vote conscious politician, of any hue, who would have reacted differently when put in front of a camera or microphone on that occasion. I certainly can’t.

I stand open to correction, but I do not recall any politician then connected to Celtic having had much to say on crowd behaviour at that League Cup Final, or similar cretinous episodes since.

    florida bhoy,

I think there is a big difference between american politics and uk politics, just look at the fear in the meeja and the torys with the new labour leader, all resources are being focused on him being vilified to try and ensure he becomes unelectable.

In Sri Lanka there is a farmer been elected last year , he is currently ripping the establishment to bits and has dozens of the most senior statesmen up on corruption charges, he has declared he will serve or term in office and will expose corruption where ever he finds it.

As p67 posted ,the act came from the fat arse whisperer, and that’s a fact, we humped the Dobs, and heads had to roll, mind you the politically groomed young team in our away support don’t help matters either, but no one puts they’r hands up, ergo open season on all fans, we need to get our own house in order first before we start pointing fingers at others, IMO . Splinter groups ignoring it, and blaming everyone and everything else, just ain’t gonny cut it, they gave the SFA,SPFL and the government the high ground unfortunately, and by god they will use it, as is the case right now, they got set up and fell for it, I know the feeling :)
