Return to SNP sender, when one becomes six

658

I’m not taking the SPFL- face recognition plan too seriously but that’s not to say the politics behind the suggestion should be ignored. Scottish football has no hooligan problems, compared England or the Continent our game is orderly and sedate. Until recent years there was no such thing as a flare problem, and offensive signing was a thing of the past.

All that changed when the SNP government got involved in 2011. Two managers shouted at each other after a game, three Rangers players were ordered off, and First Minister, Alex Salmond decided a summit was necessary to reign in the game’s wilder elements. What utter tosh.

Three weeks later, Justice Minister, Kenny MacAskill congratulated fans on creating a great atmosphere at the League Cup Final, which was notable for the re-emergence of the previously eradicated Billy Boys song. At an instant MacAskill rebased what was acceptable behaviour at Scottish football.

Since then the game has been trying to put the genie back in the bottle. The arguments were rehearsed in the CQN comments pages and elsewhere, “They are congratulated by the Government for singing The Billy Boys and we can’t sing about nationalist politics”, or words to that effect. Songs which had disappeared from the Celtic support lexicon were soon back and remain. Incalculable damage done by two incompetent clowns.

Since then the Scottish Government and a very small number (very small indeed) of senior officers at Police Scotland decided to subject football fans to the kind of surveillance that would make a military junta of a banana republic blush.

It’s a mess. Officers on the ground readily complain in private, all other political parties pledge to repeal the Offensive Behaviour’ Act, while sheriffs line up to mock cases arising from the Act. Football has been left to pick up the pieces left from a Scottish Government created problem. The Government refuse to accept any liability, will not repeal the Act and having celebrated a new, low, standard for spectator behaviour, seem quite happy with the situation.

Scottish football was doing very well before the Government decided to rebase what is acceptable behaviour. No football authority will succeed in any endeavour if the government is working against it. What the SPFL did was make a clear, if clumsy, attempt to return the problem to sender – the newly disinterested in football Scottish Government.

When one becomes six

I’ve scoured the internet today but cannot see any complaints about Celtic’s alleged “one up front” tactics. This season hasn’t gone to plan, but we’re making an incredible number of chances and scoring a remarkable number of goals.

One up front leaves space for, what is in effect, two wingers on each flank, and an attacking mid able to work inside the box.

In Germany football fans get free public transport to take them to and from football matches, all-day facilities to consume food and drink in the vicinity of the stadium, and all for a match ticket price that is fair and reasonable.

Whereas in Scotland people have to pay 30 quid to watch players the calibre of josh magenis, dougie Imrie and Keith Lasley pummel the ball and their immediate opponent into submission, pay their own transport costs to and from the game, accept police harassment, vilification and having cameras pointed in their faces, run the risk of incurring a criminal record on the say-so of a police officer every time they attend a match, and have limited facilities to consume decent food and drink in the vicinity of the stadium.

Is it really any major surprise that attendances are down the pan?

Well said mate. Think that is all Paul67 is asking for.

He has better things to do than monitor this site.

    Hail Hail

  6. Does anyone think if the OBA was repealed, which it should be the sooner the better, that Celtic fans could go back to singing like they did before that act. Honestly do you believe that whoever is in power will allow that to happen por cierto

  7. Lennon’s Passion let’s cut to the chase here who do want to name in the “clique” instead of vague references to cliques. Then we will know who you mean, HH Hebcelt

Celtic have scored 85 competitive goals this season (apologies if sums are dodgy).

What might have happened if we had two up front?

  9. Couple of observations about our January signing targets..

The 22yr old Croatian who’s currently over for talks. I read an article that he will actually train with first team on a trial, for a few days. Makes sense to me, as his pedigree doesn’t blow me away.

On the books of Dinamo Zagreb, but never made a first team appearance. Loaned out to 2 or 3 clubs before signing with his current team at end of 2013.

Sounds like the Croatian equivalent of Jackson Irvine.

Danish lad Falk… If he signs for Copenhagen so be it. 24yrs old turning out for Odense. A club 8th or 9th in the Danish top tier. Again, looking at the profile of the player, I am seeing the Danish equivalent of Gary McKay Steven. Which if he ain’t any better than GMS, then feel free to miss out on this one.

We need to retain the strategy of only signing players that are better than what we already have.

  10. Marrakesh Express on

Flares and smoke bombs are wrong but what’s the message on display immediately before every Champions league game? ‘Kick out Racism’. So while some daft teenagers looking for a buzz, become Scotland’s shame overnight, 30 odd thousand take part in a banned racist song. It goes without saying that the racist choir will be made up of daft teenagers, but also teachers, police and lawyers.

  11. SFA are drawing up a tender asking for proposals and bids to implement a chip and pin system at ALL football grounds.

They, the grey suited masters in Hampden, will insert a chip behind the ear of each ST holder.

Each chip will be activated as you approach the football ground, 5 or 10 miles away in certain cases.

A sophisticated monitoring system will track vital aspects of each fan. Blood pressure, heart beat, vocal volume, threatening gestures.

On detecting unacceptable behavior the fan will be zapped with a progressively higher shock to ensure he or she returns to calmness in the fastest possible time.

Police Scotland maintain that they cannot envisage any ways in which the new system could be misused.

    Viva the haggis republic.

  12. I will add, that the new Danish viKING Erik, is an impressive capture. Have high hopes for that one.

  13. 67Heaven .. CHALLENGING THE LIE ..I am wee Oscar...... Ipox belongs to the creditors on

So there isn’t any trouble at Scottish Football matches ….someone needs to tell the stirrers in the meeja then ….that Daily Sevco is as ridiculous as it is bitter and anti-all-things Celtic….

  14. Makes me laugh all this clique talk.

How do you think CQN looks from the outside to those that never use this social medium?

    A clique.

    Hail Hail

  15. RUGGYGMAN

well no offence that’s the way you see it, obviously someone at Celtic park sees it different, time will tell, give them a chance, Lubu, Henrik , Naka, Victor, VVD , who knows.

  16. Joe Filippis Haircut on

RUGGYMAN. I would not worry about who Celtic will sign the names mentioned in the MSM are probably incorrect and guesses.I tend to wait until Celtic make an official statement before I get bothered about who we might sign.H.H.

  17. Tony D…

Of the names you list Victor was the one that was a total punt. A complete unknown. That turned out to be a diamond.

Lubo…only the Scottish media were ignorant. Lubo was Zidanes idol, and very highly regarded in French football

Henrik starred at a World Cup quarter finals with Sweden, and was only secured on the cheap because of a contract clause.

Napa… Again had international profile. Maybe not known in Scotland, but we’re talking of a player who amassed 70+ caps with Japan.

And VVD…. Was being strongly considered by both PSV and Ajax, but both these clubs already had young centre halfs of similar profile.

Talking of profile, I’d be more impressed if they could persuade the other Croatian lad Ivan Mocinic, who definitely has pedigree.

    waghorn 7 clubs in 9 professional seasons ………. 225 appearences …………. 57 goals (a 1 in 4 scorer)

I’m not writing any names down not rocket science by their posts who want TD removed. Sad individuals to go running to 67 every time they get offended. How the feck do these sensitive souls survive this big bad world. TD had a go at me after the Stranraer game. Accused me of all sorts I survived.

  20. Gerry McCulloch is a private school boy media trained walloped. He has zero understanding of top level football and how it operates. He tries to stimulate debate with absolute nonsense.

As I tweeted to them, my mate has scored 27 goals this season at amateur level… Does that make my mate as good as Griffiths.

  21. Good evening

Magnificent result last night throughly enjoyed the game, the attitude of the players for the third game running was excellent
