Revisions have caught up with Martin O’Neill

243

Martin O’Neill is royalty.  In his company, everyone is on form.  They listen to whatever he says, no one interrupts him, no one contradicts.  If you tell Martin a joke, you make sure it’s funny.  Even the A-graders watch their words around him.

This kind of respect is hard won.  He delivered as a player, possessing two European Cup winner’s medals.  As manager of Leicester City, he reached three League Cup finals in four season, winning two.

His arrival in Glasgow in 2000 changed football here forever.  Despite winning the league in 1998 Celtic were perennial underdogs for 12 years, forever trying to catch up with their neighbours.  We have lost five leagues in the subsequence 18 years, but even during the darkest of those days, we remained a formidable opponent to all in Scotland.

Martin’s formula was straightforward.  He liked defenders who would win and clear the ball.  He liked wide players who were good at crossing the ball and he liked strikers who scored goals.  The recent sequence of hundreds of corner kicks Celtic failed to converted over nine months was unthinkable in Martin’s time.  Back then the panic was over how few goals we scored from open play.  Send the ball forward, get it into the box, everyone attack the ball.

It worked.  Then the (rightly) maligned Alex McLeish arrived at Ibrox, played three up front against Celtic’s three central defenders and won the first five trophies available to him.  Alex. McLeish.  Celtic responded by winning 25 consecutive league games in season 2003-04, the most dominating champions up until that point, but Larsson left and the stars of Thompson, Sutton and Hartson faded.  There was no sustainable strategy.

If Martin O’Neill was sitting beside me right now I would be in awe, but the writing has been on the wall for well over a decade regarding his football management prowess.  Martin had the magic potion in the late 90s and early 2000s.  He went toe-to-toe with Mourinho – the latter only edged their epic encounter with far better players, but his systems were ineffective against modern players and on modern pitches.

He reached the Euros with Ireland, despite the remarkable (cough) choice of Roy Keane as his assistant, and only a pummelling by Denmark stopped Ireland reaching this year’s World Cup, but the style of football was little changed from his days in Glasgow.

The people of Leicester adored him, then some other guy came along and won the league.  He is adored in Glasgow too, but some other guy followed him and took us into the once fabled ‘next stage’ in the Champions League, others beat Barcelona and won double trebles.  He was a titan when he left town in 2005, eclipsed only by Jock Stein, but revisionism has not been kind.

First off I did ask for exactly what you provided so thank you for clarifying some major errors in my discussion.

“I am happy to be corrected if I am wrong and there are enough legal eagles on here to do just that very quickly.”

    Again thank you for that.

However, while not having the expertise you obviously have my assertion that the copyright (again thanks for the correction) was (wrongly) a repeat of an argument posted on this site a few months ago.

While I understand exactly your point on the rights being under the control of the administrator/liquidator and without your expertise I would expect some form of notification to the partner is required either to indicate the sale or offer the share to the existing partner. Which I suspect could be challenged if the existing partner was of a mind to,

“From 2012 onwards, Celtic Plc has not used the term “Old Firm” as far as I know so I don’t see where Celtic has provided an Income stream to The Rangers via the use of this mark.”

“Please advise me how The Rangers received any income stream or become a partner of Celtic from the use of this trademark due to Celtic’s actions when Celtic does not refer to the terms “Old Firm” any more.”

Whether using the term or not the price of the tickets for “old firm” games is double the cost of any other domestic game so I must beg to differ on your claim the Plc do not use it. The new club are not the same club but the Plc continue to charge “old firm” prices, which I posit could only be charged under this banner, actions speaking louder than words, this is also the most significant income stream the new club have.

“Apart from the market exploitation by both clubs selling the derby matches at a premium ticket price, what examples of active income generating partnership activities between the clubs are there to support your point?”

    https://www.mainstagemerch.com/product/the-old-firm-casuals-logo-badge/

So we should ignore the most significant component of the “old firm” income stream generator as it doesn’t really count since enemies collude on mutually beneficial schemes. Sorry that is a partnership, when both collude to exploit mutually beneficial opportunities at the expense of those they claim to represent.

Anyroadup, while looking for more detail on the same website last night and having a wee gripe about The rangers claiming the previous ownership of the brand name which remains, a subtle correction has been made to the website which I’m sure will tickle a few on the continuation lie. And supports your initial statement about the administrator/liquidator being able to sell it on.

For the first time in many years my interest in a Scotland game and them winning, was mainly due to the involvement of the Celtic players.

JF done very well, but I think we also have a key man in the making with Christie who seems to be involved in everything.

Need to keep it going for Hamilton.

I can’t recall who said,” All managerial careers end in failure”, but he had a point.

There must, of course,be exceptions to the rule, e.g., someone deciding to retire while at the top.

Therefore, I believe, every manager has a shelf life in the game and contrary to the old adage of, “only as good as your last game”, I believe each manager’s tenure should be judged over the length of his term.

I think in MON’s case, it is a case of the game has changed and his football philosophy, based on Clough, has had it’s day.

    Martin doesn’t have a plan B.

Comparing like for like, Michael o’Neil has produced a more cohesive, progressive team, with, arguably, a smaller pool of players to pick from.

So, thanks Martin, you left happy memories in Glasgow, gave us what we needed at the time, and moved on……..and so will Ireland.

  10. The cause of unhappiness at Res12 direction.

    The problem is clarity.

There is no clarity on why the case is going to CAS. What is going to CAS, when its going to CAS and when it will be dealt with by CAS.

That is why everything should go to UEFA from Celtic with clarity.

However if the CAS route had clarity, the clarity sought in June by Res12 lawyers then if for example we knew there would be a conclusion by ST renewal time, although 5 months away, then Celtic’s support for the CAS route would be acceptable.

However that route is shrouded from view which is the cause of unhappiness because it might produce another “surprising” result like LNS.

As matters stand Celtic risk being “surprised” again and it really is in their best interests not to be by a gerrymandered investigation that can be demonstrated to have been gerrymandered by an organisation no one trusts, bar Celtic as matters stand.

  12. Old Firm FC, since 1994. √

Fergus McCann – ” Removing Rangers FC from the same league as Celtic FC, was the worst decision in Scottish football history.”

Dermot Desmond – “Rangers FC, are a wonderful club, with a wonderful history, and with wonderful supporters, and they should be in same league as Celtic.”

And on, and on, and on……etc.

And still, the plastic Paddy rebels, who don’t know how to ‘rebel’…..still, they queue up, to prop up, an Old Firm orientated PLC board, who threw the honourable Resolution 12 requisitioners under the bus, who recruited Brendan to make the easily mugged supporter base, look the other way as the new team from Ibrox came into the top league and, the deceitful PLC board, used the Brendan bounce, to charge the easily mugged supporter’s the same price to watch a game between the so called new club, as the same price as a game vs Rangers FC – £49:00. This chicanery was applied or, deployed by the deceitful PLC, with ease, because the PLC board, know full well that, the present day supporter base, is incapable of rebellion.

    Desmond, is not to blame.

    Lawwell, is not to blame.

    Bankier, is not to blame.

How could they be to blame, when, after all, they don’t plough tens of £millons into Celtic to prop themselves up.

    You do that!

But, you who faithfully, give your heart and soul to Celtic, we’ve all done it, for decade’s, you have to have that conversation with yourself, and ask your heart and mind, an honest question.

    That question should be……

“Is my unquestioning love for Celtic FC, the right way to love Celtic FC ?”

I wish you nothing but the best.

Thanks for your response and acknowledgements of the points I did make. It is good to engage on this site with different views without it turning into to personal mud-slinging (which is sometime the unfortunate case here).

A few more responses to the recent points you made:

“While I understand exactly your point on the rights being under the control of the administrator/liquidator and without your expertise I would expect some form of notification to the partner is required either to indicate the sale or offer the share to the existing partner. Which I suspect could be challenged if the existing partner was of a mind to”

I also expect that the surviving partner (Celtic) may have been alerted to the sale of the assets of Oldco Rangers, but the share in “Old Firm” would have been a very minor asset within a larger bundle. Celtic would not have wanted to buy the full set of assets and, once purchased, Newco rangers would certainly not have wanted Celtic to have exclusive use of “Old Firm”

“Whether using the term or not the price of the tickets for “old firm” games is double the cost of any other domestic game so I must beg to differ on your claim the Plc do not use it.”

The contradiction is in those words as the start of the sentence contains “using the term or not” and the end contains “beg to differ on your claim the Plc do not use it”. Either the term “Old Firm” is used to promote the new Glasgow Derby or it is not. I haven’t seen Celtic using it for several years.

Sadly in many ways, a Celtic/(The) Rangers match is the biggest box office in Scotland for many people although I also agree that lots of people deliberately avoid it. Prices are set for games based on attractiveness and demand. Glasgow derby is priced more than games against other larger teams (Aberdeen, Hibs, Hearts etc,). Champions league prices are higher than Europa League. The market demand exists without Celtic having to promote it as “Old Firm”

So we should ignore the most significant component of the “old firm” income stream generator as it doesn’t really count since enemies collude on mutually beneficial schemes. Sorry that is a partnership, when both collude to exploit mutually beneficial opportunities at the expense of those they claim to represent.”

The “Old Firm” mark that we are discussing is actually a “Word Mark” which is a category within trademark legislation for registration applications which do not include a logo. The example that you have highlighted does include a logo. This is a buckshee site which is not related to Celtic or The Rangers. (Anyway, when did either of them last sell anything for 75p?) This is exactly an example of why, in my opinion, both clubs registered the words “Old Firm” to stop this type of activity.

I have said all I can on this and my knowledge of trademark law is now exhausted so I doubt that i will have more to contribute.

    Best regards

MO’N hasnt retired from football, so it’s hardly an obituary, he’s already talking about his next job

But football, like everything else in life, has moved on a lot since 2005. Even mourinho looks like he’s had his day, the top coaches are young, progressive and flexible in their outlook. Criticizing MO’N for the last couple of years at Ireland doesn’t diminish his achievements at Celtic.

Thanks for your efforts yesterday at the AGM , even though the board does not want to know, I share your concerns about what goes to CAS, I thought CAS adjudicated on decisions made, what decisions have the SFA made?

My own opinion based on what the board are doing is they want this to disappear and will never pursue it. Much like all the other cheating that the club has been a victim of but all we comment on is by being surprised. Roll up roll up give us your money but don’t expect integrity.

  29. I find the discourse around Martin in Ireland similar to what Bobby Robson endured as England manager , lots and lots of Opinions and some nasty nasty vitriol ??? from Lazy Lazy gobshite sports journos ………who are now in the main advocating for S Kenny the guy who got Dunfermline relegated . The lack of true analysis ie why are the Republic not producing quality footballers anymore is disappointing as the squad is without doubt the weakest in 50 years and maybe longer . In Ireland the GAA games are the most popular by a mile and are complimented by the fact they are played primerally in the summer . Football on the other hand is in danger of being usurped by Rugby and will be if an effective development plan for young players is not put into place immediately . I am an avid reader of this site but Paul’s revisionism of Martins time at Celtic is 20/20 like all hindsight and tinged with a little nastiness , Martin changed Celtic and Scottish football forever, living in Scotland during their 9 in a row was tough Martin arrived and we learned that we could be great again dominate and put the fear back into them . Lets be grateful that he passed through our club gave us a fantastic 5 years changed the football landscape in Scotland but most importantly gave us our pride and hope back ………Paul please cut out the snipping it cheapens you and the site .

I got the news when I was in the Odeon Cinema in Scotstoun with a pal. The news was put on the screen by means of a handwritten bit of plastic placed in front of the screen.

This piece of tragic news was greeted with some cheering.

JFK `s handling of the Cuban missile crisis is widely recognised as having been masterly.

Learning form the disaster of the Bay of Pigs , JFK did not take the advice of the Pentagon hawks and a resolution was achieved. With the assistance of his brother , Bobby.

In view of that , I feel convinced that President JFK would not have allowed the build up of US forces in Vietnam and would have de-escalated the involvement of the US in that tragic conflict.

After all this time , it still beggars belief that this happened and that his brother Bobby should have suffered the same fate.
