If my memory was sharper, I would be able to tell you when Celtic went 18 months without being awarded a penalty in domestic football (they were awarded in Europe during this spell). When the ‘anomaly’ was uncovered, it made news across all media for a few days.
There must have been a sharp intake of breath when referees read that stat. Analysis reset the threshold and next game out Celtic won a penalty (a foul on Neil Lennon comes to mind).
Newco are the only team in the Premiership not to have a penalty awarded against them this season, an exceptional situation 20 games in. It is an accumulation of hundreds of decisions by many officials, all coming up blue.
Steven McLean will be in charge of their next game, away to Dundee United on Sunday, the man who reinvented the handball and red card rules in the 2015 Scottish Cup semi-final. With Celtic 1-0 ahead, Leigh Griffiths beat the keeper, but Inverness defender Josh Meekings was on the line and made a save with his hand.
A penalty and red card should have been awarded, instead, play was waved on. As well as an assistant, McLean had a ‘Fifth official’ behind the goal to collude with, none was prepared to take action. In a storied history of referee decisions against Celtic, this one surely ranks in the top three.
McLean later red carded Celtic keeper Craig Gordon and awarded a penalty which took Inverness to extra-time, where the man advantage proved sufficient to send Celtic out of the Cup. Far from being demoted, the following year, McLean accepted a fulltime appointment in the SFA’s refereeing setup and was awarded the Scottish Cup Final.
Would you bet on the current Newco penalty stat coming to an end at Tannadice on Sunday? I think it’s a stick-on if Newco are a couple of goals ahead.

BTW – re above, IMHO the penalties actually scored stat is irrelevant.
A team’s competency at scoring from 12 yards is a totally different topic.
Penalties awarded is the measure of the influence of decision makers (refs).
When seen alongside goals scored and conceded?

FITBA SELECT Team earlier.
JACK TAYLOR the English Ref who went on to referee the 1974 World Cup Final with West Germany v Holland in Munich.
He AWARDED a VERY DODGY Penalty to West Germany which was scored, and it tied the game at 1 – 1. West Germany went on to win 2 – 1.
The Penalty award was a shocking decision, and it was awarded against VIM JANSEN of Holland, after a BLATANT DIVE by the German Player….HOLZIENBIEN ?…..or a name something like that ?
VIM JANSEN NEVER touched the German player….much like CARL STARFELT who was PENALISED v the Huns a few days ago….VIM and CARL were INNOCENT of any wrong doing…BOTH VIM and CARL had ” went to ground” in their own penalty areas…but made NO CONTACT with ANY opposition Player.
JACK TAYLOR allowed himself to be CONNED by the DIVE, and HE was SUPPOSED to be the BEST Ref in England. VIM and his Team Mates KNEW that they had been ROBBED by a CHEAT….and Jack Taylor.
1974 and 1978…the BEST DUTCH Teams that I have ever seen.

It is clear Michael Gannon is an avid reader of CQN going by his piece in todays Daily Rectum. He’s basically copy n pasted a good few quotes from these pages.
Using them as ammo against any Celtic fan who believes we are treated differently here in Scotland.
There can’t be any kind of conspiracy, and all the facts pointing to the contrary can only be coincidence don’t you know cos Celtic are top of the league.
Are we really to believe Michael, that these “facts” can’t be getting used against us simply because we ARE top of the league?
Why don’t you at least try to be a journalist and actually investigate why “the Rangers” haven’t conceded a penalty this season rather than use the oh so obvious facts to create a smokescreen?

Great reply in The Record comments to an article about VAR by ‘
Jimbo777
I’ve been watching Celtic since my first match at 11 years of age in 1963. I went to the game alone, I cadged a lift on the local supporters bus and an obliging adult gave me a ‘lift over’. My old man was with his friends at Cathkin park watching the Thirds, changed days. I don’t regard myself as a paranoid, and try to look at things objectively, product of a ‘mixed marriage’. When the Stein led Celtic side emerged, inarguably this country’s best, the same argument as espoused in this article was put forward : ‘ There obviously isn’t any anti Celtic bias, look at how well they’re doing’. It was as bogus a premise then as it is now. I trained to be a Ref in the late 60s , a family tradition. You got to know which refs were supporters of the ‘establishment’. One such was RH Davidson, who delighted in his anti Celtic bias. There have been 15 VAR calls in Celtic games since VAR was introduced, the outcome is binary, either for or against. Celtic have had 2 calls for them and 13 against.Rangers have had 12 VAR calls, all 12 for them. In the last 5 seasons If you nett off penalties awarded and deduct those conceded, Celtic are 8 to the good, Rangers are 28. For goodness sake journos, wake up and smell the coffee. A combination of bias and probably more overtly : intimidation, cross the establishment and watch what happens is at work, how many games has Collum reffed at Ibrox recently?
Addendum, probability on 13 calls against on 15 binary calls = 0.3%, i.e. 3 chances in 1,000 , odds on 12 for in 12 binary calls=0.02% or 2 chances in 10,000 . Rangers fans dismiss the fact that they’ve had many more penalties with :’ Of course we get more penalties, we attack more’. In the last 5 seasons the net Rangers score is +28 penalties versus 8 for Celtic, Celtic have outscored Rangers in 4 of those seasons, who attacks more ?? Ps. I had a chuckle when the commentator congratulated Tavernier on ‘his brilliant, unsaveable penalty’, I thought : no wonder, look at the practice he gets.
By – Michael Gannon..
In golf, as you all know, there is a handicap system in play to give the “not so good” golfers half a chance when playing against a superior opponent.
There are golfers known as “sharks”
They deliberately keep their handicap high in order to win more often.
In the football world, especially Scotland, it would seem there is a handicap system in place.
Highest handicappers for the past 100 years have been “the Rangers”
Lowest handicappers have been Celtic
All kept there by the handicap committee known as The Lanarkshire Referees Association
Morning all. The Goldson handball was a clear penalty. But I see a lot of folks saying the Starfelt tackle was one too. The issue can be cleared up by Celtic simply asking the SFA: if one of our strikers stands on the foot of an opposing defender and falls to the ground, will a penalty be awarded?
You know the answer already.

Luv it 👍 👏

Provided those figures are spot on, this should be spread as widely as possible.
Hot smoked / floatin
Of course the issue is that if it was likely to go against rankers it isn’t referred to VAR. Two examples of this from Monday.
Had to laugh at the usual drivel on the CQN side bars.
“ Cameron Carter Vickers warned me they would boo me “
Who writes this shoite.
Boo me ? they’ll cut your fekin head off given half a chance.
Time to tell the truth imo.

I would be interested to see what the scores were when Celtic were given penalties and when penalties were given against us. I think that would make interesting reading too. As might the scores when we were denied them (like at Ibrox) and when the deid team were given them (again as at Ibrox). Penalties can obviously have a dramatic affect on the outcome of matches.
