Reykjavik in town, extinguishing hope in the 90s

216

KR Reykjavik returned to action on Friday with a home defeat that leaves them five points off the pace with a game in hand after playing nine.  The Icelandic league was suspended for two weeks prior to this amid fears of a second spike.  It is a small mercy that they travel to Glasgow today with an equally unproductive August as Celtic.

I don’t know about you but I forget there is football on when Celtic are not playing.  Consequentially, I was doing an ironing (the rock and roll lifestyle) when the phone went yesterday afternoon to let me know the greatest team never to win a trophy dropped points at Livingston.

If you are old enough to have ‘getting the ironing done’ as your weekend highlight, you will remember how the 90s worked.  Rangers would drop points, giving us hope that this was our time, but then Kilmarnock, or the like, would extinguish any light in the dark.  Every new season started with desperation more than hope but we carried the knowledge that we were simply not good enough.

For some reason, I found a draw at Pittodrie on the opening day of the season in 1996 devastating.  The previous year brought only a single league defeat all season.  We made huge strides but needed to turn many of the 11 draws that cost us the campaign into wins.  Andy Thom scored a last minute equaliser in a game Celtic battled for everything, but deep down I knew, this was the same story I had watched played out the previous eight seasons.

Dropping those points at Kilmarnock made the table look ominous but we got an insight into the calibre of others yesterday.  Time for others to stress about what will be celebrated in May.

Anyone any idea when the two games in hand can be, or are likely to be scheduled to be, played?

    ____

Too early to say. We are competing in possibly 5 cup competitions this season.

We will have to wait and see how it checks out.

We actually have 2 games against St Mirren to reschedule due to one being dropped for the 19/20 Scottish Cup final.

Unfortunately politics and religion are entwined in our clubs history and society in general.

There is no escape e.g. the odious OB act, the cancellation of games and the sanctioned political highjacking of a valid cause prior to each game.

I say again, unfortunately it cannot be avoided.

    HH.

Greenpinata, I agree with what John Reid said, a few years ago @ one of our Club’s AGM.

He said, Politics should be left outside. Politics, is all about a matter of opinion. & really

should be debated elseware, not on a blogg, which is mainly about our Club’s fortunes,

or misfortunes, in other words all things to do about Celtic, not present day current affairs

    issues, end of.

They will no doubt, take place midweek after the New Year.

  4. When you see the Huns going out & buying Hagi, Roofe, Itten, Bassey & Balogun you scratch your head & wonder where are they getting the money from and then are they smarter than us getting bargains & getting their players in early,

Then you wonder about Genk taking Kouassi & effectively swapping him for Hagi. Are they stupid or what?,

Or maybe they knew Hagi was a flash in the pan player & were glad to get rid.

He has been dire in recent games and although in fairness it’s early days both Itten & Roofe haven’t been a whole lot better,

Balagun has done well for them but if you look at his record in last 2 seasons he has only played 19 games and already missed the game yesterday with a quad injury.

There best players are Barisic, Kent & Aribo, Fat Boy seems to have chucked it, just maybe this quick off the mark buying spree. played to the masses but so far has not significantly strengthened them.

  5. So is the game tomorrow night only on Premier sports and not free with Season ticket for first Euro qualifier???

    D :)

Was John Reid not a political figure ?

My daughter was the mascot when John Reid was chairman, he was brilliant with us.

Incidentally I’m also doing an online course ” Code of Conduct ” . Probably in breach even referencing that.

There is no escape from politics, religion and indeed social media.

    Cheers and HH.

  7. CorkCelt, Sevco have made panic buys, which will not stregthen them, more like weaken them.

It will be interesting to see if they can match what they did last Season 2019/20.

In my view, nah, I think they will be overall weaker this Season.

Yes Greenpinata, he was an MP.

I know their is no escape from said topics, however we should all try, to put those topics

to one side, which causes division. One is not going to be easly indoctrinated, by another.

That is the way of Life, or as the English would say, you can easly lead a horse to water,

however you can not easly force it, to drink it.

  9. The big problem with trying to keep politics out of football, is trying to keep politicians out of football.

Dr Reid may have been an effective Chairman of the Club. By his ‘day job’ was as Blair’s attack dug, ensuring compliance to policies that included an illegal war against Iraq and an invasion of Afghanistan. His comment when sending UK troops into the latter, that he hoped none of them would have to fire a shot in anger was beyond crass.

His successor is a peer for a party whose policies exacerbate the poverty and inequality that our own Celtic Foundation seeks to alleviate.

Politics n fitba. Not so simple is it?🤷🏼‍♂️

I know JamesGang, the Labour Party & Socialist’s which are both linked, have their Flaws.

However the Voter’s voted them into Power, & their was serious flaws on there watch.

There is no denying that fact. All Political Party’s have flaws, & the bottom line here is

that they are all in it for the money, which is a fact.

They don’t really care for us, & are all in it for themselves.

Although, they would never admit this, but it’s true.

The Celtic Foundation, is for fund raising, which goes to the unfortunate Community, which is good news.

Better, than some Charity Orginisations out there, who have been on the take, by awarding their

CEO’s, bumper annual payments, that is for sure.

  13. The hand of God on

The Celtic support and to be fair fans of other clubs in Scotland have shown remarkable faith or loyalty (call it what you want) in buying ,and in our case selling out, season tickets but I do fear for the response for next season if fans dont get into watch any games this term.Harsh economics might determine their cash is required to support their families rather than a football club.Due to lack of sponsorship and a tv deal that is dwarfed by many other leagues it could be a real struggle for many clubs next season if society is not back to at least near normality.

  14. Dissapointed, if true tha Hickey has chosen Bayern Munich.

I think we really need to have a look at our youth system, considering the players we have lost recently.

I would expect Karomoko will be next

  15. Those who didn’t fancy Hickey have nothing to worry about. Apparently has signed a 5 yr deal with Bayern Munich,

Good Luck to the lad, those clowns running Bayern obviously haven’t a clue when it comes to assessing footballers.

  16. Problem St. Tams is with basically a 2 horse race we need to win every game because we can’t rely on other sides taking points off the Huns. Obviously it happens now & again but we can’t rely on it.

This need to win every game restricts the Manager in taking risks with the younger players, agents see that as well and advise the kids accordingly.

I have absolutely no doubt that Karamoko will join the exodus end of season for a Development Fee.

If an offer comes in this window we would probably take it as we know he won’t sign a new contract.

You are damn tooting The Hand of God.

Having to watch matches, with my Season Card hiked up price, is a complete joke.

No fun @ all. Also our Club, will be taking a hit, on Match Day Packages, Booze Sold,

Food Sold, & Merchandise sold,& Club Boxes sold, on home match days, as well.

Football Matches, is not only a social day out, it’s also a Buisness Deals Day Out

As well. The Quicker We Are Allowed Back In, The Better It Will Be For Everyone.

It’s a punt, a numbers game, as it was with Hepburn and Morrison earlier in the summer. They are off to play in the German 3rd division, get to break ‘world-class’ Bratwurst with Mueller and Lewandowski from a socially distant cafetaria and will probably be back here after being spewed out in a couple of years as Munich prune the wheat from the chaff.

  19. CORKCELT

You make a good point about being 2 horse race. But surely we could be using the League Cup for giving some younger players experience. I also think we should be taking advantage of the 5 sub rule.

That’s a bit harsh CorkCelt, about Bayern Munich.

However, they tend to produce positive results on the playing field, as a Club.

Obviously, the said Lad, was not in our Club’s future plans. Or perhaps the young

Lad in question, had an offer, which he could not refuse.

We will find out, @ a later date.

A few Season’s ago, our Club had a promising young Lad, on their payroll. & Chelsea

came in for him, with not only a bigger wage packet, but also offered him & his

Family to buy them a House in the expensive part of London, & also get a his Family

Members a Job, so how can we compete with that? In trying to keep our good

future prospects, it’s not easy that is for sure.

  21. Bayern Munich have an annual revenue of three quarters of a billion. The 4th biggest in world football. They can afford to hoover, take punts and spew kids out. Their track record for developing academy players is pretty poor but in the face of FFP (no laughing) they are copying the same tactics as all the super rich clubs when it comes to youth recruitment and development.

Hickey in a few years may come on to be the new Alphonso Davies. Hickey in 20/21 would have the malcontents on here driving him to the airport given the limitations in his game and what’s at stake for us.

  22. There is always a risk in young players and the big Clubs can take in 10 in the hope of producing one gem,

As I said earlier I was neutral about signing Hickey but just couldn’t understand guys dismissing a lad who has just turned 18 & already has 24 Senior SPFL appearances.

If Lenny wanted him, I wanted him but the word now is that he has gone to Bayern, so we will never know if he was right for us or not.
