Right back challenge

913

We can convince ourselves we have players who can fill the right back role, and this may be true for a few more weeks, but Mikael Lustig was one of the frailties that cost us against AEK last August, and we don’t even have him now.

So far the transfer window has gone well, but a team is as well as its weakest link. Failure to get a right back who can stop crosses into the box has to be avoided.

That night in Athens is all the motivation we should need.

It’s 2.30 on the ole clock

” The arms were granted on April 4, 1889.

Rutherglen was created a Royal Burgh by King David I between 1124 and 1153.

The arms are based on the devices on the oldest known seal of the Burgh from 1357 and 1493.

It has been said that they show three things characteristic of Rutherglen: her ships, her seamen and her church. The ship and mariners, from the obverse of the seal, recall that for a long period, the town was the chief trading and commercial centre on the lower part of the river Clyde.

The Virgin and Child and the angel supporters come from the reverse of the seal; the twelfth-century parish church, of which only a stone tower of later date remains, was dedicated to St. Mary the Virgin.

The motto is a free Latin rendering by Professor G. G. Ramsay of Glasgow University of the local saying “Ru’glen’s roon red lumsreek briskly “.

Next weeks Uefa Champions League qualifiers SECOND ROUND Fixtures.

    TUESDAY 23rd JULY

    Viktoria Plzen V Olympiakos

    PSV Eindhoven V FC Basel

    TBC V Dinamo Zagreb

    TBC V FC Copenhagen

    TBC V Maccabi Tel-Aviv

    TBC V Apoel Nicosia

I take it this means that all the named teams above have all got a greater co-efficient than Celtic and have gone straight into the 2nd Qualifying Round accordingly.

We have to play on July 9 & 17 for the honour of going onto the same round of fixtures.

So Tommy Smith signed for Stoke, eventually, sadly shredding to pieces the myth that we can blow Championship clubs out the water whenever we like for players.

Lot of clubs in that league prepared to take crazy risk to give themselves a shot at promotion.

I think you have listed what they call the League Path to qualification in CL i.e. for teams that did not win their league (Basel and Plizen were both runners up in their league but, unlike Scotland get a chance of 2 or more qualifiers for CL).

It is not a great position to be in because qualification from the League Path might be harder than from the Champions Path where we are placed with other clubs from leagues that only get their Champions into the qualifying draw (our SPFL runners-up are in the Europa). The League Path is harder because these teams (Basel, Plizen etc;) will play against teams from leagues that are good enough to have more than one attempted qualifier for CL. We just have to beat the Champions from diddier leagues

At the 3rd qualifying stage they will be joined by Porto, Kiev, Krasnodar, Brugge, Basaksehir & LASK (Aut) – 4 will qualify from that group at Play Off stage.

In the Champions Path- all the teams so far have played in Q1(some played a preliminary round) & winners will play in Q2. The Q2 winners will be joined by Ajax (despite last year’s heroics- they have to qualify despite being Dutch champions- PSV as 2nd get to enter at Q.2 stage) and PAOK at q.3 stage (that is where they enter the fight) and at Play-off round by Young Boys (Swiss) and Slavia Prague who are Champions of their higher rated leagues.

Like the League Path, only 4 will qualify from the Champions Path to the Group stage.

    Clear as mud, eh?

    But definitely corrupt.

The reason that some clubs enter the competition at a later stage is due to their country rankings, even if their club co-efficient is actually lower than Celtic, e.g Zagreb 29.5/Celtic 31.00

Once into the draw the club co-efficient determines whether they are seeded or unseeded.

Don’t forget that clubs like Stoke and WBA will be enjoying parachute money from the EPL for another season or two – this ‘free income’ still dwarfs Celtic’s telly money by quite a distance.

Throw in the likes of Leeds, Derby and Forest – who all still see themselves as ‘big clubs’ and will spend money – and you start to see why luring good players away from the Championship can be difficult.

Exactly mate, and why its a myth that getting players from that league or beating clubs in that league to players is straightforward. Its not, for many reasons. Doesn’t mean it can’t happen of course. One thing that would tip the balance in our favour is group stage CL football but that is far from guaranteed. I suppose we can point to the fact we’ve qualified for the group stage 10(?) times but 4 qualifying rounds increases the chances of slipping up. And the cutting short of summer holidays to fly to far flung Eastern Europe or Linfield for qualifiers is hardly a selling point.

  20. Transfer Style Guide updated 2019

    (33) Rainjurz in talks with players shall be referenced as ‘secret talks’, but ALL of these transfers will be so secret, that the transfer fee will be described as £4.25 million per MINIMUM regardless of the nature of secrecy. After the secret talks are widely unsecret via copy etc, and Gers have swooped, said previously unheard of international star, who has jetted into Bearsden, the unknown fee will suddenly become ’UNDISCLOSED’ ( move right along Timmy )

Note: Should Chinese clubs be interested in having secret talks with any Gers stars the secret fee will start at £11M (minimum) and a top journalist will always be required to say, they’ve seen the secret talks email

  21. Not just luring them away from the Championship, getting them to move to the SPFL,is a big problem,IMHO.

No big upheaval moving from His present club to Stoke. No ties to Celtic,so what does he care.Just a well paid job for these guys.

  22. I mentioned a few days back, about talent pool throughout Europe.

Czech Republic : Slavia Prague, Sparta Prague, Viktoria Plzen

    Croatia : Dynamo Zagreb, Rjeka

Austria : Salzburg, LASK, Austria Vienna

    Poland : Legia Warsaw, Gdansk

Switzerland : Young Boys, Basel, Lugano

Serbia : Crvena (Red Star) , Radnicki Nis

Belgium : Genk, Club Brugge, Standard Leige

Romania : CFR Cluj, Steua Bucharest

Are we scouting these leagues. Are we scouting the top teams within these leagues.

Because there will be talent there. Not just talent, but affordable talent.

Bypass the English market. There will be a right back operating at one of the teams above, who will be superior to Tommy Smith , and potentially purchased for much less than £4 million, and £28k per week

  23. Concerned that Tommy Smith signed for Stoke, no. Concerned that we went for him in the first place, yes.

  24. For many footballers, especially the younger ones. Playing football in Scoddland now wont be on the radar. Clearly they want to be as near to the money bags as possible………..

Agreed – as compensation, we can offer a decent signing-on fee – but any positive discrepancy in our favour probably works better for projects rather than established players who have other options. It is very difficult.
