Right back position focus for last days of the window

203

With two days of the transfer window left Celtic have strengthened attack with the loan acquisition of Timo Weah and Oliver Burke, and the permanent signing of Vakoun Issouf Bayo.  Ukrainian winger, Maryan Shved, is in discussions with the club but as Brendan Rodgers explained, we have many wingers at the club right now, so it is likely that if the deal concludes, Maryan will be loaned back to Ukraine until Burke and Weah depart at the end of the season.

Brendan also clarified the position in central defence, where we have two players to replace for the Champions League qualifiers, but Dedryck Boyata and Filip Benkovic will retain their positions until the end of the season.  A lot of work in June for this issue.

The other position that remains active is right back.  Michael Lustig has been with the club seven years but is likely to depart at the end of the season, with injuries taking their toll.  I know there are a few options active but nothing yet concluded, however, this will be the main focus for the next two days.

  1. timjim – apparently he played a couple of reserve games and hasn’t been seen since even though we had applied for his work permit. Time for some conspiracy theories? Maybe he’s gone back to Govan in Judas style . . . or he decided he could do better . . . . or we decided he isn’t good enough . . .

  2. Timjim.

Obviously playing in Arbroath was too much for him.

    He disappeared after that. :-)

Hot Smoked was at that game, so he will be one of a select few who saw him play for Celtic.

Craig Gordon shot stopper v Scott Bain footballer.

I said after the Airdrie game and his triple save Scott couldn’t be dropped?

BR wasted money on DDV for the same reasons as you cite, but had to live with it because Gordon proved

an infinitely better keeper when we’d seen DDV in inaction.

Craig isn’t good for the CQN ‘bombscares’ ‘escapegoats’ and ‘liabilities’ but there was save in the second half v Sevco ( can’t remember who ) that Scott Bain could only dream of saving IMHO, simply due to his height and reach.

Two good keepers not a supporters concern IMHO

Centre back problems are perennial at Celtic even in the good times, we tried to offload Jozo Suimunovic as a costly mistake early doors, but Torino took fright. Since then he has had more injuries than runs in the side, we even improved his contract when Burnley were allegedly interested. I believe its a pain threshold thing where he thinks he’s been shot, and he hasn’t.

Boyata also caused BR problems buy putting off till after the World Cup can’t blame him, but he only became any good after he’s played 70- 80 games for us and BR thought he could talk him round. The problem was solved by Celtic in managing to get Filip Benkovic on loan.

The problem we face is paying much more than we have in the past i.e. millions for replacements who will settle for Celtic wages,

£5M players want £5M player wages unless we buck the trend and shell out the hyper inflated fees caused by clubs everywhere but in Scotland?

Makes perfect sense to wait until summer because the quality that is required to rebuild the back line never comes up in January and we end up half assed with Daniel Majstorovic’s etc, etc. We now have the added problem of the cynicism where the internet guesses that our world class manager will leave Celtic because well, just because.

    As ever CSC

p.s. much more urgency in signing a Right Back as we need to remember PCLustig’s legs already went last season.

I thought Brendan explain it quite succinctly in his “presser”

Availability, Affordability and Do They Want To Come…

Thanks for the pressers by the way, a real treat listening to BR..

We have CB’s who are good enough ,CB’s who are not yet good enough but might become so , and CB’s who possibly will never be good enough . We also have CB’s who are not really CB’s , but if the worst comes to the worst , they might have to pretend to be.

The one thing they have in common is that they are either injury prone when they come here ,or become injury prone once they’re here.

What we need is a quality CB pairing who can remain fit and play together for most of the season , as Celtic CB’s of my youth did.

“What we need is a quality CB pairing who can remain fit and play together for most of the season , as Celtic CB’s of my youth did.”

I totally agree. I find it really strange that it seems almost impossible to play with a good centre half pairing for any length of time nowadays. Is it really due to the rigours of playing in a far more athletic game like we are supposed to these days? Did Roy Aitken give anything less in the multiple games that he played? Before this transfer window many of us wanted to see some new signings in the centre back position. It hasn’t seemed like we were going to sign anyone but surely if Benkovic (and Tierney) is injured long term, then we MUST sign some new defenders.

  8. If we fail to add defensive recruits how about putting Broony back there?

He could fill in at right back or centre half.

We have an abundance of midfielders so we have cover.

A wise head and leader at the back may be just what we need.

One of the many photographs that Celtic author Ian McCallum purchased from the Mirror Group to use in his series of Books

At a rough guess i reckon by the time the series is finished KDS member McCallum will have spent almost 15 years of his life writing and researching.

Although i must say he is creating something that is historical and unique to Celtic, something that no other club in the world will have.

  11. Apart from Europe. Our central defenders have very little to deal with in domestic competition perhaps the old limbs are in need of a little nourishment to ward off all their injury problems. Maybe Brendan should make it compulsory for our central defensive lads to drink a couple pints of stout after training. Problem solved.

  12. ADI _DASSLER

Broony has a better motor than PCL.He also worries opponents more.

Incidentally i don’t think it’s PCL’s pace thats the main problem.

His gap control is poor so his lack of pace makes it hard for him to cover.

He probably stands off due to fear of being burnt for pace but if he got tighter and bumped them he would have a better chance.

Being tighter would also make it easier to cut out crosses which is were he really struggles.

  13. Fan-a-tic

He has been a world class defender so IMO he has what you call gap control. His lack of pace contributes to him being exposed. He still has intelligence/experience to manage a lot of games.

He hasnt been pi** in every game.

Yes, I think the game has changed and CB’s have a different role to play . It’s faster and played more on the ground. CB’s in the John Cushley type mould were big robust guys who probably headed the ball more than they kicked it . There wasn’t the same requirement to be mobile and to be quick enough to play their part in the passing game. That maybe puts more stress on hamstrings, groins and ligaments , but I’m not convinced that our mountain of injuries is purely down to that. It would be interesting to compare our defensive injury rate with that of some of the European teams who play in fast , technically demanding leagues. Of course , you also have the Scottish anomaly of referees allowing brutality on our players.

  15. ADI_DASSLER

I never said he was piss in any games.

I think he had gap control in the past but for last two seasons has struggled with.

Many older players have had to adapt due to many factors.

PCL can still play a role but not sure he can contribute as often as he did in the past

I think players are more injury prone, or softer (in a polite way I guess). Clubs are now more aware of burn out and of trying to prevent problems before they hit. Not always successful of course.

Man U, Arsenal and even Liverpool struggle to keep their back 4 fit.

Gerrard demanded his players play through pain before the last derby. Result was Goldson being out for far longer than his initial injury warranted. Inexperience and short termism go hand in hand sometimes

I dont know if it was confirmed, but I thought one of the posters on here (cant remember who, but who seemed to know) suggested that KT’s problem was oseitis pubis. If so, more of an over- training problem, is it not?
