Risky Ronny, win a new Celtic shirt

712

I can’t argue with John Hughes winning the Manager of the Year award.  Without glossing over the obvious semi-final issue, he’s taken Inverness to stick-on favourites for the Scottish Cup and, for a while, stuck with Aberdeen in the Best of the Rest fight.  The second half of the season have seen fortunes fade, but this reflects the resource paucity he has, compared to Dundee United or Aberdeen.

What’s just as clear is that Ronny Deila would have been a contender for the award.  Appointing a manager is always a risk.  Gordon Strachan was as safe a pair of hands as you could hope for in 2005, but it took nerves of steel for him to cope with some early reversals.  Tony Mowbray was also a known quantity, who should have done better, but rookie Neil Lennon pitted against experienced Walter Smith was highly risky.  Neil could have sunk without a trace, instead of winning all those trophies.

At least Neil knew the club and the club knew Neil.  Appointing a guy from one of the smallest professional clubs in Europe, totally unknown in the Scottish game until Celtic scouted Stefan Johansen, was an almighty risk.

What we recruited was a philosophy.  Celtic knew how a football team should be prepared, how to recruit, what tactical intelligence was required in a manager, and they travelled to Strømsgodset to find their man.

Had he qualified for the Champions League group stage, I reckon Ronny would have won Manager of the Year, but as this is the standard Celtic managers are judged by, he missed out.  There are no guarantees in football, so qualifying next season cannot be taken for granted, but he should be better prepared.  As should the players.  This is the target, Ronny.

SPECIAL COMPETITION ALERT

Celtic sponsor, Magners, have offered two of the new home shirts, launched yesterday, as competition prizes.  To win one, all you have to do is answer the following question:

Who is the Celtic assistant manager?

Email your entry to celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the assistant manager in the SUBJECT line of your message.  Competition closes at 1pm tomorrow, so you have one day to get your answer in.  Terms and conditions apply.

These are two fabulous prizes.  While you are entering the competition, you might want to donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen campaign.  You can do so here.  Thank you.

Many thanks to Magners (who get what we’re about).

CELTIC have written to the Scottish Football Association looking for clarification on the decision not to award them a penalty in Sunday’s William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final defeat to Inverness Caledonian Thistle at Hampden.

What’s that now 15 going on 16 days?

What have we heard from Celtic?

What have Celtic heard from the rat’s nest in Hampden?

If anything, why has it not been communicated to the support?

If nothing, why are we allowing the SFA to drag their heels?

Has there been an enquiry into the decision?

Has the referee been asked for an explanation? A full one?

Will we allow this to be ignored?

Totally agree with everything you say, interestingly, this morning I looked at the NI football show on the BBC football web page. Now I know that many on these pages will have no sympathy for either of the two teams in the weekend cup final in East Belfast but forget about the two teams involved and concentrate on the absolutely outrageous decisions given against one side. Another point of interest is that the officials in the Northern league have to explain their decisions, according to the two guys hosting the studio broadcast.

The system in Scotland is stuck in the dark ages and urgently requires major fixing.

Celtic were robbed of a place in the final.

Perhaps a G.B.demo outside Hampden on the day of the final immediately prior to the game might hit the spot and underline the inequity lurking in full view in the seat of fitba` power.

  16. Prediction…..

If……Celtic supporters were to realize that….at ‘this’ moment in time…the fans power is at it’s peak….coz of SB-renewal deadlines….should, Celtic supporters use their ‘savvy’ and, connect with each other with a view to…over-hauling the O.B. bill-stuff which is disgraceful and, it shouldny be left to fans to deal with this if….there were Celtic supporters running Celtic FC…they would put the best legal-minds onto the case and get it fixed.

Were I’m going is….Celtic supporters shouldn’t need to but, sadly they do….should inform Celtic FC that – “Paying to watch our football club can get us an un-warranted criminal record. So, get it fixed or….we wont be coming through your doors to risk getting a criminal record and, sadly this may impact on the finanaces of the club so….what are you going to do about it…..?”

    …..I predict that…..within a month and, the fans financial-gun at the directors heads….all this mess would…one way…or, another…be fixed.

JIM McGUINNESS has revealed he is about to begin studying for his UEFA coaching badges as his influence behind the scenes at Celtic continues to grow.

Jim McGuinness and Ronny Deila have developed a close working relationship

Jim McGuinness and Ronny Deila have developed a close working relationship

The former manager of Donegal’s GAA football squad was brought into the club in 2012 as Performance Consultant, working primarily on issues related to psychology with younger players, and stepped up his role earlier this season when being promoted to assist the members of the first-team.

McGuinness left Donegal in October following a defeat to Kerry in the All-Ireland final and is now working full-time with the SPFL Premiership champions with his revelation that he is about to begin UEFA’s B licence course an interesting development.

“It has been a very busy schedule in terms of joining Celtic in a full-time capacity and working exclusively with the first team,” said McGuinness.

“It was out of the frying pan and into the fire to an extent and I have really enjoyed working with Ronny and the coaches.

“That has given me the opportunity to start doing my coaching badges, which I hope will add a lot to the job I already do. Possibly, I could look at coaching the younger players in the academy at the same time as doing my badges.

“I start my UEFA B licence in two weeks’ time.

“I do a lot of one-to-ones with players every single day and you do get into very in-depth conversations with them. There is lot of technical and tactical stuff as well as general conversation.

“I have been a coach and I would like to challenge myself in that area. I am going into it with an open mind and really enjoying it at the moment.

“The manager has said he is going to give me a couple of sessions in the season ahead. We will see where it takes us.”

McGuinness has spoken previously about the relationship he has developed with Deila since the Norwegian took over from Neil Lennon as manager last summer.

“Since the new manager has come in, he wants me to work pretty much exclusively with the first-team,” said the 42-year-old. “I work on the psychology things with players.

“We are very like-minded in our approach. Other than the fact I was very defensive and he is very offensive, the principles are exactly the same.

“He wants, high-octane football, energy, workrate, a lot of preparation and a lot of offensive energy going forward – taking the game to the opposition.

“If you take that philosophy forward, there are a lot of demands within it. The energy levels can sometimes become a problem, so the key thing for a manager is that the players are happy and have high energy levels.

“If you want to train at 100 per cent every day and work hard every day and want high energy on the pitch and in drills, you have to be demanding. That’s why my role has become more important.”
